Argument

The following appeared as part of an annual report sent to stockholders by Olympic Foods, a processor of frozen
foods:
“Over time, the costs of processing go down because as organizations learn how to do things better, they become
more efficient. In color film processing, for example, the cost of a 3-by-5-inch print fell from 50 cents for five-day
service in 1970 to 20 cents for one-day service in 1984. The same principle applies to the processing of food. And
since Olympic Foods will soon celebrate its 25th birthday, we can expect that our long experience will enable us to
minimize costs and thus maximize profits.”
Discuss how well reasoned . . . etc.

Essay

"The conclusion in the report sent to stakeholders that experiance will enable the company to minimize costs is not supported by sufficient evidence. There are no facts mentioned to support the conclusion.

The report fails to mention statistics suggesting higher efficiency with more experiance. Specific information such as what was the efficiency and cost in the begining, what is the efficiency and cost now is missing. Without this information stakeholeders will not be able to compare the change in efficiency.

Report mentioned example of photo prinitng, but it failed to relate this example to Olympic food processing. In case of photo printing, there can be more factors leading to cost reduction than years of experiance. It could be introduction of new technology or availability of cheap paper. Report applied the 'same principle' to both buisnesses, however it do not say which pricnciple. Also the price reduction in case of photo prinitng was in 14 years but what happened with price of Olympics foods 14 years of experiance is not mentioned. So it is not wise to draw conlcusion on the basis of photo printing example.

Though organizations perform better with experiance but there are more than one factors that decide the cost and profit. Some such factors are labor cost, machinery cost, inflation rate etc. If maximization of profit with experiance is true for every buisness then there will never be losses and shutdowns. Thus the conclusion would have been convincing if supportted by some statistics."

Issue
"People often complaint that products are not made to last. They feel that making products that wearout fairly quickly wastes both human and natural resources. What they fail to see, however, is that such manufacturing practices keep costs down for the consumer and stimulate demand."

Essay
"Many people feel making perishable products is a waste of both natural and human resources. On the otherhand it can be noted that such products keep costs low and generate the demand. In this discussion I would like to support the later argument supporting the making of products to keep costs low and stimulate demand. Everyone can not afford to buy costly things. A person may not be able to buy a costly product at all but that person may buy same product more than once if it is not that costly. Also many people are salaried, they get salary weekly , fortnitely or monthly. Such salaried people may not have the capacity so spend big money at once but low cost may help them buy the product. Also there are situations when a person need a product for temporary use. In such situations any person would prefer a low cost product that may not last long. For example if a person need to spend a month in a rented accomodation then that person would prefer to buy a sleeping matress or sleeping bag instead of buying a good costly full sized bed. Thus low cost of the product makes sure that a common man is not deprived of it.

It is agreed that making products that wear out quickly requires human and natural resources. But then we have human resources who need work. If people are not engaged in making such products then they may be unemployed. Which might be a bigger problem then using them to make such products. Many of the natural resources used in making such products can be reproduced. For example trees are used to make paper and we can replant them.

Products that wear out quickly makes sure that product is in demand. Demand of product means production of that product. This ensures that workers involved in produing that product are employed. Demand of such products ensures that people are not out of jobs.

One more aspect that support of making products that wear out quickly is When a product is made again and again then it leads to improvement in that product. So making such products not only ensures low cost and demand but also helps in improvment of products. "
