I have written a few practice essays and since I have write a lot I find myself varying from the simple templates of "However, First," yada yada. However, I don't think is a good thing Smile I was wondering if I should make a concerted effort to stick to a simple strategy, if bigger phrases or non-simplistic contrast words are really going to hurt me. Just trying to get the best score.

Thanks!

Ironically, I strongly believe that the GMAT AWA section does not reward sophisticated writers like yourself. They tend to award points to simply constructed essays, similar to what you probably did in high school:

  • 5 paragraph format - intro, 3 body, conclusion
  • Transition statements for each paragraph - Furthermore, However, Moreover
  • etc.

Check out the AWA essay resources available at http://del.icio.us/beatthegmat. There are a ton of examples of 5/6 score essays as well as templates for writing your essays. Follow these formats and you'll do well.

Save the sophisticated writing for your business school apps! Smile
