Section 8 Q22

by geosak1 » Thu Oct 04, 2007 6:45 am
. If 1 < d <2, is the tenths’ digit of the decimal representation of d equal to 9?
(1) d + 0.01 <2
(2) d + 0.05 > 2

Can someone tell me why the answer here is B???

1 tells us that d<1.99 so it could be anything from 1.01 to 1.98
2 tells us that d>1.85 i.e. 1.86, 1.87 to 1.99

I originally said that the answer is E.
I could only say it is B is the stem of the q was saying that there is only one decimal digit in which case 1.85 up until 1.94 becomes 1.9. Phew!

Hey,

(2) tells that d>1.95 not d>1.85 since 2-0.05=1.95

Therefore the tenths’ digit is alway 9.
