I know this is crazy.
But I have a feeling that we have loads of Process engineers /chemical engineers.
maybe the union of them could discuss some problems or anything

yeah many guys from India might not agree with you on this... thanks to booming IT sector in the country.
i do agree with you in general terms. but you just cant ignore the fact that ave. starting sal of a fresh BE CHEM is ~4000 Rs. whereas ave IT guy's earn ~16000 Rs. in the beginning of his career.

Hmmm...I am not sure whether this is accurate..looks a bit skewed to me...
Perhaps a more appropriate way to put the details would be that the salary of a fresh BE/B.Tech Chem STARTS from Rs.4000 (i.e 4k is the lower limit)...
Cant imagine 4k as an average...sounds too low to me
