Post MBA career path and job profile

by asamaverick » Tue Jul 20, 2010 7:40 am
I am trying to understand the exact nature of work for a typical post MBA career. Something like 'A day in the life of a XYZ (Portfolio Manager, Investment Banker, Risk Management Analyst ...etc). At a high level I know the responsibilities involved, but I am looking for something directly from the horse's mouth, from the people who have been in these positions.

I am also interested in knowing the career path for different post MBA options.

Does anyone know of any resources (books/websites)?
Any pointers on this will be much appreciated.

Thanks

EssaySnark says, what a great way to start networking with your target schools! These are questions that you can ask of an alum of a program your interested in. Often the schools will have alumni attend their info sessions, and you could possibly strike up an informal conversation in the lobby. Or, ask the admissions office to put you in touch with alumni in the field you're interested in.

Or, you can just Google "Day in the life of an investment banker" and get stuff like this: https://www.face-time.com/day-life/

Thanks Essaysnark.
I had searched for this earlier but was not content with what I read, as you mentioned I guess the best way is to raise this in info sessions.

I completely agree with you that there are not enough resources that help MBA applicants understand what kinds of careers people enter post-MBA. I'm an HBS 2010 graduate and I work for myself as an admissions coach. I've taken a fairly non-traditional career path, so my story might be interesting to you but probably not that helpful.

Perhaps BTG will launch something that will help with this! I think it's a prevalent concern and would be really interesting to everyone.

EssaySnark also points you to this site on IB:

(we are not affiliated with this consultant in any way and have never had any experience with him/his services, so this is not at all a recommendation, just a pointer to an article relevant to your original query)
