The topic that “Even at its best, a government is a tremendous burden to business, though a necessary one.” is a controversial one. But I think it has a good relevance to present day business conditions.
Government is often thought to be a protector and regulator of business in it’s country. But in the present context it’s producing more hindrances to the growth of both private and public sector organizations. In mid twentieth century when industrialization of countries started ,government was playing important role in setting up new organizations , particularly public sector. With time business scenario in all countries have changed drastically , but governmental policies had changed itself very little. So , it started giving rise to friction between business as a whole and government. This friction lead to frustration among young people who wants to start their own business. Initial governmental policy requirement and demands of corrupted government officials make them to be away from new ventures.
Public sector corporations are also suffering from the same problem. They are obliged with high governmental restrictions in venturing . So they can’t effectively compete with their private counterparts. The result is that , increasing number of public sector corporations are becoming sick, and finally sold on scrap values to private organizations.
Government attracts huge income taxes from well established businesses. But they rarely comes with any rescue package .Consider the case of Satyam computers , one of India's largest software service provider, the government had denied completely to give bail to the corrupt hit organization, leading to thousand of unemployed software professionals.
However, the government also have some advantages. It’s policies prevent people to steal the money from the market and to play with shareholders, it also avoids suppression and gives a stable economy. But, governmental policies have an overall negative effect on the growth of business in any country .To prevent itself from acting as a burden on business of country ,it should change it’s policies with time and with business requirements.
