OG SCv99

Judge Bonham denied a motion to allow members of the jury to go home at the end of each day instead of to confine them to a hotel.

(A) to allow members of the jury to go home at the end of each day instead of to confine them to
(B) that would have allowed members of the jury to go home at the end of each day instead of confined to
(C) under which members of the jury are allowed to go home at the end of each day instead of confining them in
(D) that would allow members of the jury to go home at the end of each day rather than confinement in
(E) to allow members of the jury to go home at the end of each day rather than be confined to

Okay we all know OA is E. But my question is how we decide to use THAT or to allow after "Judge Bonham denied a motion"

Would you choose F instead of OA it there were an option as:

(F)that allows members of the jury to go home at the end of each day rather than be confined to

I think the error here in options A & D is "that would"

We know that Judge has denied the motion so instead of using

would - uncertainty

we must use

will - certainty

regarding option F

that allows members of the jury to go home at the end of each day rather than be confined to

this could even be written as

allowing members of the jury to go home at the end of each day rather than be confined to

I think both are perfect

Any thoughts.

D is wrong because U are trying to comapre a verb (allow) and confinement. Confinement is not a verd and it is illogical to compare these both.

A is wrong becase " instead of" is not clear. Rather than should be used.

Well in D, confinement should be parallel to go home and not the verb "allow"

We are comparing two things = either to go home or to stay in the hotel.

the discussion was mainly centered around "that would" and "to allow"

Thats why all the other errors were ignored for the moment.

Any thoughts on these errors, do you think option F stated by Logitech is correct or even better than option E, also the two options that I have stated in my post, are those correct?

Let us know your thoughts.

Thanks.

PC , would was nice catch.

whenever we use "that" we always use bare infinitive, to omit the usage ov "that" then we use infinitive = [to+base form of the verb]

To simply put this.

That + to + verb = wrong construction

That + verb = correct construction

Let me know if you think otherwise. Though I am pretty sure about this.
