A: James Baldwin's books that Baldwin wrote
This wording is redundant, implying the following meaning:
THE AUTHOR'S books that THE AUTHOR wrote.
Eliminate A.

Generally, COMMA + VERBed should serve to modify the nearest preceding noun.
D: the books of James Baldwin, written while he lived in France
Here, COMMA + written is intended to modify the books, but the nearest preceding noun is not the books but James Baldwin.
Eliminate D.

This type of an idiom issue, the one between B and E, is not going to be a deal breaker: you have to look for something else.

As it is an official SC from one of the latest official material, i think there is a room to analyze B and E further.
A professor at the university has taken a sabbatical to research on James Baldwin's books that Baldwin wrote in France while he was living there.

A) on James Baldwin's books that Baldwin wrote in France while he was living there.
B) about the books James Baldwin wrote in France .
E) the books James Baldwin wrote while he lived in France.
In A, while he was living there is an adverbial clause modifying verb wrote.
In A, in France is a prepositional phrase (adverbial) modifying verb wrote.
Can we say there refers to in France?
Yes.
Can we , thus, replace there with in France in A?
Yes.
Can we, now, say that there, which refers to in France, modifies was living?
Yes.
Can we thus conclude that in France, an adverbial prep phrase, modifies both wrote and was living?
Yes.

What is the purpose of modifiers?
What is the purpose of adjectives and adverbs?
They modify and in modifying, they end up making what they modify more specific.
In A, we have two modifiers( both adverbial) modifying verb wrote.

In B, in France is a prep phrase modifying verb wrote
Unlike in France( prep phrase) modifying was living in choice A, in France no longer modifies living in choice B.
Why?
because B has gotton rid of living part altogether.

A communicates that part.
B omits that part.
C omits that part.
D communicates that part.
E communicates that part.
A classic 2/3 split!
