700 Level question?

by fangtray » Sat Feb 18, 2012 1:41 am
The purpose of the proposed law requiring a doctor's prescription for obtaining hypodermic needles is to lower the incidence of drug-related deaths, both accidental and intentional, involving hypodermic needles. But even knitting needles can be lethal if they fall into the wrong hands; yet everyone would agree that imposing legal restrictions on obtaining knitting needles would be preposterous. Hence the proposed law involving hypodermic needles makes no sense and should not be enacted.

Which of the following, if true, would provide most support for the argument above?

a. Knitting needles have been known to cause injury and death
b. The benefits of hypodermic needles outweigh those of knitting needles.
c. The proposed law would not deter the sort of activity known to result in drug-related deaths.
d. The propsed law could not be effectively enforced.
e. knitting needes are not readily available to anybody who wants to obtain them

Options b,d and e seem irrelevant to the data provided....

only left between A nd C to choose....

again A seems to be info repeated...

thus left with C as the answer....

You are looking to strengthen - so you need another fact that makes it more likely that the law should not be enacted.

A) - repeats info we already know.
B) - knitting needles shouldn't be banned and the fact that hypodermic needles' benefits outweigh those of knitting needles doesn't make it more true that hypodermic needles shouldn't be banned.
C) - the purpose of the law is to lower drug related deaths - C says this won't happen therefore this strengthens the fact that the law should not be enacted.

D) enforcement is not an issue in whether the law should be enacted or if it makes sence.
E) - talks about knitting needles, not hypodermic needles - wrong subject.

Therefore C is hte best answer.

What is the source of the passage?

A cannot be the answer as it repeats the information provided in the passage.

IMO: C is the best choice
