Can you pl tell why the the choice is E not D? D, unlike E, is in past tense while the main sentence (That the new managing editor rose from the publication's " soft" new sections to a leadership position) is also in past tense......Claret wrote:THAT is needed for making the statement parallel.

the tenses should be simple present as emphasized above..

I agree with the OA.
Here's why:
[spoiler]We need a 'that' to make the sentence parallel; choices A, B, C don't have this, so we can take these out. Answer choice D is not correct either... this suggests that she changed her gender during some point of time, which isn't implied anywhere in the original sentence (tenses can do this sometimes...). So, the answer is E.[/spoiler]
