by sq720 » Mon Jun 08, 2009 5:38 pm
That the new managing editor rose from the publication's " soft" new sections to a leadership position is more of a landmark in the industry than her being a woman.

A.) her being a woman
B.) being a woman is
C.) her womanhood
D.) that she was a woman
E.) that she is a woman

why is " that " needed can someone please explain the rule with " that"
E

THAT is needed for making the statement parallel.

X more than Y

X and Y should be parallel..

Can you pl tell why the the choice is E not D? D, unlike E, is in past tense while the main sentence (That the new managing editor rose from the publication's " soft" new sections to a leadership position) is also in past tense......

I agree with the OA.

Here's why:
We need a 'that' to make the sentence parallel; choices A, B, C don't have this, so we can take these out. Answer choice D is not correct either... this suggests that she changed her gender during some point of time, which isn't implied anywhere in the original sentence (tenses can do this sometimes...). So, the answer is E.
