A social program has been instituted in Washington, D.C. in which residents can sell guns to the municipal government in exchange for cash. This program is very popular, and the police believe that it will lead directly to a decrease in robberies.

Identify the most valid inference from the situation below:

(A) Some people who sell guns to the government are criminals.
(B) Police believe that an abundance of available guns increases the number of robberies. correct
(C) Most robberies that occur in Washington, D.C. are armed robberies. your answer
(D) Some of the guns that have been sold to the government have been used in robberies.
(E) Robbery is the only crime residents usually commit with a gun in Washington, D.C.

B is incorrect...!

as argument says -> police believe that it will lead directly to a decrease in robberies.

and B option says -> Police believe that an abundance of available guns increases the number of robberies.

so we can see that both are contradictory...

although no option is suitable enough ...

It looks that author of this ques.. intended to put DECREASES in place of INCREASES in option B

the correct answer is indeed B.

as argument says -> police believe that it will lead directly to a decrease in robberies.

and B option says -> Police believe that an abundance of available guns increases the number of robberies. --> so, if the residents exchange gun for money, the abundance of guns will reduce hence the robberies.

Hope this helps.
