‘Some people with advanced skills in technology are assured a high salary, even if they do not have a college degree. It makes no sense for these people to go to college.’

The author states that people who have advanced skills in technology earn a high salary even though they didn’t go to college. Therefore it is no necessary for them to go to college. However, I don’t agree completely with the statement.

The fact that these skilled people are assured a high salary was common in the past, when higher education was not available for everybody. But talented and skillful people had the chance to success and earn a high wage if they show that talent and skills. For example, many of the engineers of the Formula 1 Championship didn’t go to college.

However, nowadays this situation is very unlikely because technology is so advanced that skills are not enough to be in the top technological and research programs. Thus it is necessary further knowledge in fields such as physics, chemistry or biology to be able to understand what is happening in the complicated natural processes. For example, to work in the ‘Big Bang Machine’ in Switzerland skills are useless to understand the beginning of the universe.

Finally, companies don’t hire a person only because of his skills and now it is a job application requirement to have a degree in a field of studies related with the job you are going to develop. Therefore, if somebody wants to be admitted in a technology company he or she will need a college degree in a science field.

To summarize, nowadays it is almost impossible for somebody to earn a high salary only because he or she is skilled in technology because it is necessary to have also knowledge of what you are doing and not only know how to do it well.
