Q. 285 :
Even though the state has spent ten years and seven million dollars planning a reservoir along the Ubi River, the project will have to be abandoned as a result of the river becoming so heavily polluted.
(A) will have to be abandoned as a result of the river becoming so heavily polluted
(B) is to be abandoned on account of the heavy pollution which the river received
(C) had to be abandoned because the river had received such heavy pollution
(D) has to be abandoned because of the river and its heavy pollution
(E) must be abandoned because the river has become so heavily polluted
Could someone pls help understand why the OA is E here and not A.
Will be grateful.
Thanks and Regards,

I eliminated A, because i did not like "as a result of" phrase here. "Because" is a perfect word that specifies why the project must be abandoned. Also E is more precise than A.

(A) will have to be abandoned as a result of the river becoming so heavily polluted
(E) must be abandoned because the river has become so heavily polluted
HAS become is not only parallel to the first half of the problem but also conveys the meaning more clearer that option A.

I think the use of 'because' cannot be preferred to 'as a result of' in general, but here the meaning conveyed by the original sentence is not clear..it says the project will have to be abandoned as a result of the river becoming polluted when infact the river becoming polluted is the reason for abandoning the project and not the result. Therefore E, which conveys the meaning clearly and precisely is the correct answer
hope it helps:)

Here becoming modifies river....so the sentence says that project has to be abandoned because of river....which is wrong....When infact the reason for abandoning is the effect i.e. pollution of river....which "E" says correctly.
(B) is to be abandoned on account of the heavy pollution which the river received
"which" is wrong here.
(C) had to be abandoned because the river had received such heavy pollution
"had" is wrong here.
(D) has to be abandoned because of the river and its heavy pollution
This is wrong because it says project has to be abandoned because of
1. river
2. its pollution
When infact the reason for abandoning is the effect i.e. pollution of river.
(E) must be abandoned because the river has become so heavily polluted
Correct.
