median /average

by mariah » Fri Feb 03, 2012 6:55 am
List A has A numbers, median of which is 85 and average of which is 82.
List B has b numbers, median of which is 78 and average of which is 75.
When two lists combined, is the median greater than the average?
1). A+b=97
2). A=42, b=37

For any of these you need to know the make up of the sets to be able to tell when the median will be for the new set. The average is going to be somewhere between 75 and 82. However, consider that all of the number except 1 (a large negative number to make the aveage work) could be 85 for List A and with appropriate distribution for B, the median would be around 85. This can happen with B to A as well making the median around 78. Thus above and below where the average would be.
