I zeroed onto 2 options A & D.... But cldnt exactly point out why A is wrong
Can someone plz explain to me why 'that' is required here and the usage 'countries as varied as....' is wrong?

Hey i just checked the answer key and turns out that A is rite!!!!
which means that is not required here.....i guess i knw why....

which is used to modify a noun where as that is used to modify a phrase....here that is modifying a noun.....this is the reason y i eliminated D.... and chose A

IMO A.

The reason i eliminated D is -

We are comparing countries and with china, netherlands, germany, etc...

When we use that we are comparing positive effect on countries with only three other countries which is not what sentence imply.

Hence A is correct.
