My chances?

by AA11 » Tue Feb 01, 2011 10:48 pm
Hey guys

This is my profile:

Major: Engineering at a US College

GPA: 3.0 (graduating this semester).

GMAT: (haven't taken it yet but got a 620 on the GMAT Prep Test after around 3 weeks of Prep and I have another 3 weeks to study. Aiming at 700)

Work Experience: Summer internship at a big accountancy firm (with world-wide recognition) at my home country and several part-time jobs at school

Recommendations: Math Professor and Internship Supervisor

Target schools and programs:

Boston U , MS Finance
UT Dallas, MS Management (backup)
Duke, Masters in Management
Wake Forest, MA Management
NYU- MS Management and Systems
Case Western- MS Finance
Simon School of Business- MS Management
U of Maryland- MS Finance
Fordham, MS Finance (backup)

What do you think are my chances at these schools? Am I aiming too high?

The MS programs are going to be much less worried about the lack of WE than the MBA programs. Are you interested in a career in academia or perhaps in accountancy? Why the MSM vs. the MBA. The reason I ask is because the MBA is generallly considered a more marketable degree. For the long term, you might consider working a couple of years and then going back to school. At that point, you would have a broader choice for graduate school which would include the MBA programs if that becomes more interesting.

Hi

MS programs will primarily look at your Academics, essays and recos. Work ex is a plus but not a necessity. However have a plan for what you plan to do post the MS and figure out whether it will take you there. Placements options are much better in an MBA program. Of course getting in is a lot more competitive and you will need to wait out a few years and gain some good work ex.

In answer to your question - No, you are not aiming too high. Highlight the unique points in your profile and your interest in the field of Finance.

Good luck
