Hi,
I got the following questions wrong, can anyone pls explain me the answers.
Children who watch a great deal of Television and their families have a history of near-sightedness will probably require glasses sooner than their peers who are not predisposed to myopia in these ways
1. and their families have a history of near-sightedness
2. whose families have a history of near-sightedness
3. and a history of near-sightedness runs in the family
4. whose families have a history of near-sightedness running in them
5. with a history of near-sightedness running in the family
Correct answer : 2, I got it as 5.
2. The J. C. Penney chain of retail stores broke with its conservative cash-and-carry policy during its 1958 reorganization for deciding to sell on credit
1. during its 1958 reorganization for deciding to sell
2. for the decision at its 1958 reorganization to sell
3. when it was reorganized in 1958 for its decision to sell
4. in deciding during its reorganization in 1958 to sell
5. by deciding at its reorganization in 1958 on the selling of
The correct answer is 4, I selected 1.
Also, there is one question in Sahil's notes, I did not understand tht. pls explain, especially the preposition + noun + participle rule.
Charlotte Perkins Gilman, a late nineteenth-century feminist, called for urban apartment houses including child-care facilities and clustered suburban houses including communal eating and social facilities.
A) including child-care facilities and clustered suburban houses including communal eating and social facilities
B) that included child-care facilities, and for clustered suburban houses to include communal eating and social facilities
C) with child-care facilities included and for clustered suburban houses to include communal eating and social facilities
D) that included child-care facilities and for clustered suburban houses with communal eating and social facilities
E) to include child-care facilities and for clustered suburban houses with communal eating and social facilities included
Explanation:
First, we can eliminate all the answer choices that use with communal eating and social facilities included or any other structure that follows this pattern:
preposition + noun + participle
This pattern is almost always wrong on the GMAT, and is certainly wrong in this question. This eliminates C) and E).
A) is ambiguous--is clustered suburban houses parallel with child-carfacilities or with urban apartment houses? We need to repeat for to be sure that clustered suburban houses is parallel with urban apartment houses.
Now we're left with B) and D).
Now, the only difference between B and D is the infinitive to include, which GMAT considers unidiomatic.
That leaves us with D).

js to add to it..i think there is somethign wrong with the first questio itslf( though not terribly wrong )...coz without a punctuation mark after Children the OA seems incorrect...coz if we take the OA without a COMMA after Children- it seems the word WHOSE FAMILIES in fac propells more the television than the subject Children
i THINK the correct form shud be
Children, who watch a great deal of Television, whose families have a history of near-sightedness will probably require glasses sooner than their peers who are not predisposed to myopia in these ways
dats my two cents..i mite be wrong though....

Can somebody explain the JC Penney Question.
I am still not convinced how Choice 4 is correct.
The sentence will sound like this if we put 4 in
The J. C. Penney chain of retail stores broke with its conservative cash-and-carry policy in deciding during its reorganization in 1958 to sell on credit.
Two things that throws me away here
1. Policy in deciding???
2. We are breaking Deciding to by adding "during its recognization" in between.
Appreciate any clarification on this
Thanks
