Profile Evaluation

Hi,
Kindly evaluate my profile
X-89%
XII- 80.2%
undergrad- 7.50 Cgpa (Chemical Engineering)
workex- 3rd year of job at the time of applying
Company: Reliance Industries Ltd.
I will be writing GMAT in July.

Does ISB differentiate between candidates with different workex background? For example I have manufacturing operations background so how do I stack up against candidates from suppose IT or BFSI or consulting? Also I went through their website and found a lot of emphasis given on leadership showcased. What exactly does that mean keeping in mind my 3 yrs workex background in manufacturing operations. Would be glad to have a view on this. What more can I add in my profile in the 4 months left till application deadline which will help me.

Pankaj,

Consider the following points:
  1. Operations is a very broad field. It will help to get some more details here as to the nature of your work and accomplishments. ISB, like most top schools, likes diversity. And ops can build a lot of character in general, but you'll have to articulate that well.
  2. The pedigree will also matter; where did you do your undergrad from for instance? You have also not mentioned anything outside of workplace that may be of interest. That adds color to the otherwise professional only profile.
  3. In the time that remains, there is usually hardly much you can do to really show impact. The best strategy would be to crack the GMAT out of the park and get your overall pitch right.

Thank you Manish!

1. I am into plant manufacturing operations at a petrochemicals site. I look after plant production and handle emergencies. I have a few process improvement ideas under my belt which tweaked the operational working of the plant.
2. I am a graduate from NIT Nagpur. I was the Training & Placement Co-ordinator there. I was also event head at annual Tech and Cultural fests. I play cricket and represent my department here in the internal tournament. I pursue music mixing on a virtual platform called VirtualDJ. I had some NGO experience but that was 2 years back.

I wanted to know with what lens will ISB view my workex because I am contemplating a job change in the coming months. Will that go down well? And also what will be a safe GMAT score considering all this?

Pankaj,

The role change so close to the application time is not a great idea. It will be pretty tough to fit into your larger story unless it is about moving closer to the post-MBA goals you have. The profile could be pretty good, but the onus of making it flow in context of your goals is pretty important.

Think of going a good 20 point or so over the school's average GMAT as a target ideally.

Thanks for sharing your background. Regarding your specific question to how you'll be evaluated, you should know that you'll be compared to applicants with similar backgrounds to yours. So, since you have experience in Manufacturing Ops, you'll be compared to others in the industry. How does you showcase leadership? Leadership can be found in any function and any work effort. It's about the initiative you take, the influence you have on others, and the focus you have on your team. Accomplishment and achievements are important as well. The best way to differentiate yourself is to craft a story highlighting the impact you have in all the work that you do - including your involvement in your community. At this stage, your focus should be on earning the highest score you can on the GMAT. After July, shift your focus to your application essays. Regarding leadership experiences, it does not necessarily have to be based on direct reports or on the organizational chart, it could be the initiative you took to present an idea to higher leadership, informal mentoring of colleagues, organizing events related to your passions, or leadership experiences outside of the work setting. Showcasing these experiences allow the readers to know more about you and helps you become more relatable, while displaying your potential as a future leader post-MBA.
