Most insomnia is not an illness or a physical condition so much as a symptom of another problem that may simply be a reaction to certain medications, anxiety about travel, or stress before a job interview.

    A. an illness or a physical condition so much as a symptom of another problem that may simply be a reaction to certain medications

    B. an illness or a physical condition so much as symptomatic of another problem that may be a simple one, like a reaction caused by certain medications

    C. so much an illness or a physical condition but a symptom of another problem that may be as simple as when certain medications cause a reaction

    D. so much an illness or a physical condition, but it is a symptom of another problem, maybe a simple one like certain medications
    causing a reaction

    E. so much an illness or a physical condition but symptomatic of another problem, maybe simply a reaction to certain medications.

OA IS A WHY IS C INCORRECT

    What is the source...
    OA E at http://www.beatthegmat.com/insomnia-t40559.html
Explanation by btg760 seems good but that can be applied to A as well.

What is the source of THE Question??

Below link has OA as E and here OA as A. Please reconfirm your answer.

I too believe that the answer should be E.

NOT X...BUT Y is a phrase; It has many variations:
    1) NOT ONLY X...BUT ALSO Y;
    2) NOT ONLY X...BUT Y...
    3) NOT SO X...BUT Y..

    Drop A/B

D - IT after BUT breaks parallism (NOT ..AN ILLNESS...BUT IT IS {NOT ..NOUN..BUT..CLAUSE}); 2nd problem is the use of LIKE (use SUCH AS when we intend to give examples)

C - when certain medications cause a reaction - CLAUSE, anxiety about travel - NOUN, or stress before a job interview - NOUN; these 3 elements are not parallel

E - is the best (though SYMPTOMATIC is slightly awkward compared with A SYMBOL); The last 3 elements are all NOUN PHRASES. IMO

Is "So much as" idiomatically correct? I read somewhere this is not the correct idiom.
