If x ≠ -y, is (x-y)/(x+y) > 1?

(1) x>0
(2) y<0

Statements combined:

Case 1: x=1, y=-2
In this case, (x-y)/(x+y) = 3/-1 = -3, so the answer to the question stem is NO.
Case 2: x=2, y=-1
In this case, (x-y)/(x+y) = 3/1 = 3, so the answer to the question stem is YES.

Since the answer is NO in Case 1 but YES in Case 2, the two statements combined are INSUFFICIENT.

The correct answer is E.

Question: Is (x-y)/(x+y) > 1?

Statement 1: x > 0

We can tame this question with the help of smart test values.

We see that @y=0, (x-y)/(x+y) = 1 not greater than 1, the answer is NO.

@y=-1, and x = 2, (x-y)/(x+y) = 3 > 1, the answer is YES. Insufficient

Statement 2: y < 0

We have already seen that @y=-1, and x = 2, (x-y)/(x+y) = 3 > 1, the answer is YES.

@y=-3, and x = 2, (x-y)/(x+y) = -5 not greater than 1, the answer is NO. Insufficient

Statement 1 & 2

Both the test values analyzed in statement 2 also apply here, thus, both the statements are insufficient.

The correct answer: E
