Hi

I am not sure whether this topic has been discussed to death or not but i just want a consolidated opinion of admission consultants. Many people in this forum are obsessed about getting a 700+.Some of us trying to balance work with studying for gmat also frequently get burned out.So to find out whether our efforts do have some meaning.I would like to ask some questions on the importance of gmat.

I am also refering to an excellent article by ERIC in this forum on why not to get obsessed with gmat.

Considering the Background as an Indian Information tech engineer with x years of experience.

x being 2,3,4,5,greater than 5

1) Does the top 20 bschools or the "ivy league" ones only look at scores or scores and background i.e
say a 750 guys applies and similarly another 750 guy applies .The second guy has a good profile.
how about a 650 guy + an excellent profile vs a 750 guy.

I will further elaborate my question for people to understand the context.
Say an adcomm can only set aside 40 seats for IT engineers and there 250+ IT engineers apply for that program.
then people with lesser profile having a 750 gmat score would compete with ones with same 700-750 range with great profile. So colleges will definitely choose ones with better profile and a good score.

considering the above people with normal profile trying to write a gmat 3-4 times just to get a seat in the schools may become pointless.i.e the people would have spent their time for something other than chasing a lottery win.

2)How much is an IT experience worth for an admission. It is simple reasoning that it is difficult for people with IT profession to achieve something big prefessionally that is nonIT.So many profiles may talk about new things that are actually similar to many IT people?

Assuming the quality of experience is say normal(nothing extraordinalry) normal carrier progression then what number of years will require how much scores.I can see many schools advertising scores as 680-690 and years of experience as 0 to 120 months can a IT engineer be able to compete with a score of 630-650 and an experience of 4+ years

what i am trying to ask here is what amount of (normal carrier progression) experience is needed for how much gmat score.

3) The Investment Banking vs Management Consulting myth

Very few percentage of people except the very top bschools actually enter into an ibanking profession without the proper background work experience.I have many people asking me on this and this is the information.SO people who want to switch to ibanking please talk with the people from the prefession and get an idea on how to switch.Even studying from bschools that the banks recruit from may not be enough unless you have the experience.
I am not sure on management consulting any expert opinion on getting into a good management consulting firm from a mid-tier bschool or a top bschool will help.

This will be very helpfull because this will prevent students who want to venture into a top 20 bschool for this switch and end up discovering the truth at the placements time and end up with a job that they would have got if they had gone to a normal bschool without the huge effort for gmat or the crushing debt.

I can see many MBA grads commenting that they got the job along with people from DUKE etc and they paid very less for their program.

My intention in this discussion is that people in IT want to get into a good mba program and due to the IT background and oo much competetion there are obviously many rejects and i want a realistic picture of what is expected out of a person with a competetive background to get into a good bschool.Because this would help many people in a way that they do not get obsessed with gmat for an elusive admit hence waste a lot of time .

I have doubts if any person who has not worked as an Adcom will be able to comment on point 1. Everyone else will be speculating only.

Reg point 2, I would slightly disagree on the amount of achievement. It is possible to have substantial achievement provided you really like what you are doing. But yes the profiles will be very similar and probably the essays will make the difference.

Not sure if I have been able to answer within the scope.
