Hopefully vs It is hoped

by neeti2711 » Wed Aug 26, 2015 10:24 am
Brief psychotherapy requires far fewer hours and costs far less money than psychoanalysis and so will hopefully prove to be an effective treatment for many of the large amount of people currently seeking therapy.

a. will hopefully prove to be an effective treatment for many of the large amount
b. will prove hopefully to be an effective treatment for many of the large amount
c. hopefully will prove to be an effective treatment for many of the large number
d. will, it is hoped, prove to be an effective treatment for many of the large number
e. will, it is hoped, prove to be an effective treatment for many of the large amount

What is the difference between 'hopefully' and 'it is hoped'?

In short, hopefully, which means it must modify a verb. So, the verb that it modifies must be prove. So, the original sentence is telling us that that psychotherapy will prove (in a hopeful manner) to be an effective treatment.

We happen to have a free video on the difference between hopefully and it is hoped: https://www.gmatprepnow.com/module/gmat- ... video/1152

We also have a free video on number vs amount: https://www.gmatprepnow.com/module/gmat- ... video/1184

Cheers
