GMAT vs Jack of All Trades

by showbiz » Mon Aug 06, 2012 11:54 pm
Hi,

Herewith my profile.

High School (12th) from South Africa: 80%
Undergrad from NYU: GPA 3.8
Masters from NYU: GPA 4.0

5 years working in Finance as a software consultant (Lehman Brothers, HSBC, a few hedge funds)
1 year work with my own NGO that I started in Africa.
2 years in outdoor advertising as EA to COO.

8 years of total work experience.
6 years abroad (USA 5, India 2, Africa 1)

On the writing staff of well known television shows and stand up comedy writer.

My GMAT attempts are not going as expected. What is the bare minimum GMAT for me to apply to ISB and INSEAD?

p.s sorry for the double posting. don't know how to delete the earlier thread!

You have a very interesting profile. Stand up comedy + Finance. Who'd have thunk???
Bare minimum doesn't exist. Yo get the best score you can and you apply. I've seen people get into INSEAD with a 630, but it doesn't mean that everyone can!
So just do your best, and worry about it later.

I agree with Jon. I can appreciate how an applicant would love to know a bare minimum to see whether applying is worth the effort. But unfortunately, the GMAT score is not like an on/off switch but more like a dimmer switch meaning that applicants with higher GMAT scores have higher acceptance rates but a low score does not automatically mean a ding, likewise an 800 score does not automatically mean an acceptance.

Thanks for the reply. I understand that a low gmat doesn't automatically eliminate a candidate. My question (or rather concern) is on the weight age of the GMAT. Can they pick up a candidate with a GMAT of 540 suiting this profile?

It would be highly unlikely.

Are you utilizing every possible GMAT resource to improve your score?

"DAD. Go run for elections!"

Naa, but in fairness. I have been after the MBA dream for quite a few years now. Somehow, I can't master the damn GMAT. I have worked hard to build a good profile but its the GMAT that bothers me. I am trying to get it past a 620 atleast. Lets see how it goes...Thanks for the help guys.

:)

Good luck on studying for the GMAT. Raise your score as much as possible and then see where you are.
