Help to improve GMAT Verbal

by Sam156 » Fri Sep 20, 2013 5:14 am
Hi All,

I really am finding it difficult to ace the verbal section on GMAT. It has been a year that I have been preparing (sporadically) and during this time I have taken several full length tests.

Materials I have already practiced from:
OG
Kaplan Premier
K800

My Quant score has been in the range of 38-45 (overall range 500 - 530), whereas there has absolutely been no improvement in Verbal. I think I tend to over analyse questions and hence lose out on crucial time, I have tried to get out of the habit but nothing seem to work.

I current have taken break from work and can study for a month.

Kindly suggest some strategies for all verbal sections.

Sam

Hi Sam156,

You've diagnosed your own situation: you've been preparing (sporadically) over a year. That type of approach is not going to get you very far. Prepping for the GMAT is not much different from learning any other skill. If you practiced guitar sporadically for a year, then you wouldn't be great at that either.

The advice you're looking for is going to depend on a few variables:

1) What is your goal score on the GMAT?
2) Where do you want to apply to school?
3) Are you on any deadlines?

Thanks Rich for the reply.

I am targeting a score of 700 and have been studying regularly since last 1.5 months (everyday). I can devote one month more for regular studies.

Following are my scores so far in the last month.

GMAT Prep - 530 (Q45, V18)
GMAT Prep - 510 (Q42, V19)
KAP test - 520

I really want to kill verbal section, want to work on a strategy that will best help me tackle all 3 sections of Verbal. I dont mind doing something very basic, too :)

Regards
Sam
