GMAT exam curve

by essen_1976 » Sat Sep 07, 2013 5:44 am
Hi,
I understand that schools take the highest GMAT score. However do they form a negative or positive opinion by looking at the GMAT curve, i.e.

600 -> 650 -> 680 -> 730 (+ve)
670 -> 720 > 660 (-ve)
680 -> 700 -> 650 -> 700 (+ve or -ve or neutral ?)
640 -> 710 -> 680 -> 730 (+ve or neutral ?)

In other words, does an ever rising curve resonate more with admission officers irrespective of actual GMAT score (assuming the minimum score obtained is at least 600) ? Would they look at curves at all ? Also does the curve make a difference to companies recruiting at B-school irrespective of highest ?

Thanks.

Two things:

1) your score is your score. So just because you have improved 30 points every time they will not look at your score and say that your 680 is really a 710.

2) In your example the GMAT is taken 4 times by the applicant.

My understanding is that you would want to show improvement if you were taking the GMAT that many times. Otherwise it looks a bit like you are hoping to get lucky and in fact "fishing" for a score.

Certainly the first scenario is the easiest to explain if you are asked!
