Politician Assumption

by vishugogo » Mon Apr 15, 2013 6:34 am
Politician: It is important for members of the State Assembly to remember that Governor Norman's proposed new state thruway was part of her platform during her landslide re-election campaign last year. This means that if the thruway plan is defeated, its opponents will have much to answer for in next November's State Assembly elections.

The politician's argument relies upon which of the following assumptions?

A)Many of those who voted for Governor Norman oppose the thruway proposal.
B)The thruway proposal is likely to be defeated by the State Assembly
C)Many of those who voted for Governor Norman support the thruway proposal.
D)Everyone who voted for Governor Norman last year will vote in the State Assembly elections.
E)Those members of the State Assembly who oppose the thruway proposal do not have valid reasons for opposing it.

Prem: Present Governor won elections in part due to proposed new state thruway
CONCL: If thruway plan is defeated, opponents will have to answer in next elections.
What could be an assumption? People wanted / valued the thruway that's why they voted for the candidate who promised them the thruway.

if we negate an assumption, and if the conclusion falls apart, we can point it as an answer for assumption questions.

option C says: many of the voters for present governor supported the thruway proposal. if we negate it, does the conclusion fall apart?
negate: many of the voters for present governor DID NOT support the thruway proposal. If true, even if the thruway is not provided to the people, opponents will not have to answer for that in next elections because most people didnt care for it anyways. the onclusion falls apart.

This is the ASSUMPTION.
