Exurban life-MGMAT

by selango » Sun Jul 11, 2010 12:23 pm
Life in an urban center, with daily experiences of subways, crowded sidewalks and dense living, provides countless opportunities for social contact and connection. Exurban life, by contrast, exists in the openness of freeways and one-acre lots, exhibiting little that would suggest social commonality. Yet studies show that people who live in exurbia consistently rate their feeling of connectedness to their community as strong whereas urban dwellers more frequently express feelings of isolation.

Which of the following, if true, contributes most to an explanation of the difference in the reported feelings of connectedness between urban and exurban dwellers?

A.The cost of living in exurbia is significantly lower than that in urban areas.

B.Rates of attendance at houses of worship are much higher in exurban areas than in urban ones.

C.Exurban school districts often spend more per capita on their students than do those in urban areas.

D.The rate of violent crime is much lower in exurban areas than in urban ones.

E.Many people who live in exurbia moved there from urban areas.

The paradox here is that urban dwellers are physically close but feel isolated, while exurban dwellers have far less physical closeness but feel more emotionally connected. Cost of living and spending on students in school districts are irrelevant, so A and C are out. E could be a result of the situation, but not a cause. Similarly, D could be a result of the feeling of community, or of the physical distance. That leaves only B. If exurban dwellers attend houses of worship much more frequently than do urban dwellers, it's likely that the exurban dwellers have similar belief systems as those around them, as well as common interests, goals, and activities. All of these things would increase a sense of connectedness with the community.

Conclusion: "people who live in exurbia consistently rate their feeling of connectedness to their community as strong whereas urban dwellers more frequently express feelings of isolation."
Premise: Need to choose from the answer choices.

E would not explain the why this situation holds. If urban people shifted to exurban then due to less physical proximity the situation would have worsened. B explains why there is a difference.

In my opinion E should be the right answer.

"Many people who live in exurbia moved there from urban areas." So the possibility is that the people who moved from urban know each other and hence more connected, whereas many people who stayed in urban area have seen lot of close people move out thereby reducing their social circle.

i am not able to find the conclusion of the argument.
Premise 1-Life in an urban center, with daily experiences of subways, crowded sidewalks and dense living, provides countless opportunities for social contact and connection. Exurban life, by contrast, exists in the openness of freeways and one-acre lots, exhibiting little that would suggest social commonality.
Counter premise-Yet studies show that people who live in exurbia consistently rate their feeling of connectedness to their community as strong whereas urban dwellers more frequently express feelings of isolation.

Please help finding of conclusion and right answer.
