Subjunctive ?

by GMATMadeEasy » Wed Jun 22, 2011 1:41 pm
Several financial officers of the company spoke on condition that they not be named in
the press reports.
A. that they not be named
B. that their names will not be used
C. that their names are not used
D. of not having their names
E. of not naming them

I found this question on the net just like that and thought of sharing. In my opiniàon, OA should be A but not sure.

I would have gone for B but for the post topic, which reminded me of using that + infinitive form of verb (without to) in places of Uncertainty. Here the officers talked about uncertain conditions - if they not be named, then ..so we can say they are uncertain.Hence A

Similar to : I ask that he be allowed to continue (Source : Manhattan SC)

Just my two cents !

Folks, This is a Excellent problem with Meaning

OA is A

Reasoning:-

The name of a person cannot be used in the paper is wrong because so many people can have their names can be related to some other person.......

For example if peter is an officer he cannot say his name should not be in paper......Peter can be a name of a sport's person and his name can come in paper because of various reasons......

So this eliminates all answers except A.....Here in A it says they must not be named....means he as an officer should not be tagged to the reports....

So, OA is A
