-i come from a small town in india. Being a artist myself i realised that we dont get a platform to showcase our talents due to lack of opportunities , we provide artists like us a platform to exibit their talents and help them grow professionally within the art circle. so this is the nature of the startup
-we organised a major event in our city in which 70 artists across the town participated and through the networking power of social media we managed to generate a foot fall of over 1500+ this helped the artists to gain a ground to network and market themselves.

MBA focus:
technical Marketing, non profit,entrepreneurship
post MBA
short term goal: broaden my skills in technical marketing and gain international exposure

Long term goal:since our business is in need of technical marketing,i wish to head the business in sale and marketing and convert this company into a global brand.

school targeted: HBS,Wharton, Kellogg, Kelley, Ross,Tuck, Booth

Also,i have a basic question in mind: i have got a gmat of 710. few of these schools which i wish to apply have an average of 720. Since i am from a over represented group of applicants does it hamper my chances of getting into these schools? and lets face it..any other indian i meet has got a gmat of no less than 730!so i am a little worried!

thanks! (my apologies for a lengthy mail)

First the international experience differentiates you as does your family business experience.

Furthermore, your social enterprise startup experience differentiates you as does your being an artist.

To answer your question a 740 GMAT score would help you. At our AIGAC (www.aigac.org) Conference I tried to pin down and admissions officer about exactly what that gap is between the average GMAT and Indian average GMAT but unfortunately I could not get the number. So I would suggest you retake the test.

But even if you are unable to increase your score you have a compelling enough candidacy to apply to those schools, especially Kelley.

What exactly do you mean by technical marketing? Do you mean to say the marketing of technology product and services or marketing to the technology industry? There many other schools I could suggest for you to consider applying.

Best of luck,

Hi,

You are at the right stage of your career with good GMAT score and work experience. you have fair chances at Kelley, Ross and Tuck but other schools look little ambitious. You should ideally apply to minimum 5 schools to increase your chances and start your applications in parallel with your GMAT preparation if you are planning to retake. What I feel is if you are confident of scoring 740+ in your next attempt then only you plan to retake GMAT otherwise its better to focus on your applications and start working on essays.

If you are based out of Bangalore or Mumbai you can attend our infosession with ISB and meet the alumni from top B-Schools visit https://goo.gl/GjmFdu

Hi,

Your work experience looks diverse and interesting and automotive sector has always attracted adcoms. Your family business experience will also be an advantage. But at the same time, you should be able to defend your move from a job to family business and now need of MBA with a coherent story.

Except for Kelley, all other schools in your list are ambitious. Try to improve your score to 740+ and then you should be able to target Ross, Tuck, and Booth as well. HBS, Wharton and Kellogg will still be aspirational.

Plan your time well. Either aim for higher ranked schools and improve the gmat score. Or, settle for medium rank schools and apply with current score ( this will also give you more time for apps and may be you can get some scholarship as well)

Michael's brought up some great questions and I'd be curious about your answers to them as well. Another question for you is when are you planning on applying? What do you have lined up in terms of opportunities (professional and community) for the upcoming year? If you can really expand your role and impact at the family business and / or grow the nonprofit, that would do wonders for your profile. Also, if you're planning on waiting, then you should definitely retake the GMAT. You've only taken it once (it seems) so there's no downside for you.

But, as always, the more info we have the better so let us know what's going on and we'll try to help you figure out the path forward!
