Two key issues with E:
The first issue is "conceived of X to be" is not idiomatic - the correct idiom is "conceived of X as".
The second issue is "other than what it is". Not only is this wordy and awkward, but it also doesn't have quite the right meaning: "other than" seems to imply an exception (e.g. "I will eat anything other than spinach"). We aren't looking for an exception - we want an opposite. "Instead" more clearly matches the intended meaning.
