Answer should be E because in B two clauses have been joined by comma only.Optimus Prime wrote:International sporting events need not be fiscal disasters, the financial success of the 1992 Olympic Games demonstrates that fact.

"Demonstrate" is the verb of financial success.
The financial success of the 1992 Olympic Games demonstrates
==> The financial success demonstrates.

Hi Optimus Prime,
Just to expand on gmat_perfect's response, B is incorrect because two independent clauses are joined by a comma alone. (Independent clauses are clauses that can function on their own as complete sentences.) Two independent clauses must be joined by either a semicolon or a comma and a coordinating conjunction (and, but, or, nor, for, so, or yet). Any other punctuation results in a run-on sentence.
Many run-on sentences consist of two independent clauses joined by a comma but not by a coordinating conjunction (as in choice B). Such run-on sentences are known as comma splices. Choice A would also make the sentence a comma splice.
Hope this helps!
