Confusing Remainders Problem

by focus1234 » Wed Dec 21, 2011 9:13 am
Is the sum of integers a and b divisible by 5?

(1) x is not divisible by 5
(2) x-y is divisible by 5

Decoded statement 1 and came to the conclusion that the statement is not Sufficient

Have a problem decoding the second statement - can anyone suggest what the statement is asking and which concept is being tested?

qst (a+b)/5 ?
st(1) x implies a or be here, Not Sufficient as we don't know whether a and b are both not divisible
IOM st(2) x-y implies a-b or b-a here, x=7,y=2 and (7-2)/5 but (7+2)/ !5 although x=10,y=5 (x-y) and (x+y) are divisible by 5, Not Sufficient
combined st(1&2) if one is divisible by 5 and other isn't then the sum (a+b) isn't divisible by 5. If two numbers a-b divisible by 5, and a or b cannot be divisible by 5, then we have no divisibility of (a+b) by 5. Sufficient to answer No

(2) x-y is divisible by 5
x+y-2y = 5n
x+y = 5n+2y

you dont know anything about the value of y
Insufficient

combining the two statements
x is not divisble by 5
x-y = 5n

y too is not divisble by 5

x + y = 5n +2y
hence, x+y is also not divisible by 5

Option C
