Comma following "and"

by goelmohit2002 » Wed Jun 24, 2009 12:51 pm
Hi All,

In one of the VIP GMAT test(VIP Test#3, Q39) the following question was there. In that test the OA is "D". But when I checked on the net the OA is "A".

The reason for kicking out "A" is given as "The comma that follows "and" should precede it in order for the conjunction to properly coordinate the two clauses.

Can some one please tell that "comma before and = wrong" theory holds any ground in GMAT ? If this is not the case...then probably I will have to look for other similar learnings that I have done from that source :-(

==================================================

Minivans carry as many as seven passengers and, compared with most sport utility vehicles, cost less, get better gas mileage, allow passengers to get in and out more easily, and have a smoother ride.

A. Minivans carry as many as seven passengers and, compared with most sport utility vehicles, cost less,
B. Minivans, which carry as many as seven passengers, compared with most sport utility vehicles, they cost less,
C. Minivans carry as many as seven passengers, in comparison with most sport utility vehicles, and have a lower cost, they
D. Minivans, carrying as many as seven passengers, compared with most sport utility vehicles, cost less,
E. Minivans, which carry as many as seven passengers, compared with most sport utility vehicles the cost is lower, and they

Thanks
Mohit

usually, and is used for list of items or for coordinating clauses,

but in d minivans, carrying (gerund qualifying minivans to those carrying as many as seven passengers is changing the meaning of original sentence.

so A is better

Thanks.

Does it mean that both comma before and i.e ".....,and"

and comma after and i.e. "....and,"

both are acceptable in GMAT ?

I copied this from Test Magic forum

forms :

Modifier , noun + verb + predicate
modifier ,noun , modifier , verb + predicate
modifier + conjunction + modifier , noun + verb
noun , modifier , verb

See the third form
Conjunction is the key to answer this question

more
modifier ,modifier is wrong
We ned a conjunction to join modifiers

Hope this helps

By the way
In one of the VIP GMAT test(VIP Test#3, Q39) the following question was there
