The plot of The Bostonians centers on the rivalry between Olive Chancellor, an active feminist, with her charming and cynical cousin, Basil Ransom, when they find themselves drawn to the same radiant young woman whose talent for public speaking has won her an ardent following

(A) rivalry between Olive Chancellor, an active feminist, with her charming and cynical cousin Basil Ransom, - Incorrect Idiom

(B)rivals Olive Chancellor, an active feminist, against her charming and cynical cousin, - Incorrect Idiom

C) rivalry that develops between Olive Chancellor, an active feminist, and Basil Ransom, her charming and cynical cousin, - Correct

(D) developing rivalry between Olive Chancellor, an active feminist, with Basil Ransom, her charming and cynical cousin, - Incorrect Idiom

(E) active feminist, Olive Chancellor, and the rivalry with her charming and cynical cousin Basil Ransom - change in meaning. This option incorrectly links Olive Chancellor and rivalry, making the usage of "they" suspect

As mgmt_gmat rightly pointed out,

Concept tested - Idioms....We either use rivalry between A and B OR the rivals A and B

Answer - C - right usage of "between-and". Could not eliminate E however. Chose C over E because of an intuition about what was being tested. Understood from posts that E cannot be the answer because they does not have a clear antecedent. Thanks :)

Her can refer only to olive chancellor unless there is any other eligible noun before it to be its antecedent.

E changes the meaning. The plot was on rivalry and not on Olive Chancellor.
Moreover, I am not sure but we use rival and rivalry as follows:
1. Iran and Iraq are rivals with each other.
2. There is a rivalry between Iran and Iraq.

Rivalry with sounds awkward.

Zeroed in on the idiom "rivalry between ..and.." correctly.

While most of the above comments state that E changes meaning, I felt that the movie could have focused on both Olive and her rivalry hence eliminating E was personally tough. However as rightly mentioned by Gmatkiss, it is mentioned as "the rivarlry" instead of "her rivalry".

rivalry that develops between Olive Chancellor, an active feminist, and Basil Ransom, her charming and cynical cousin,

Can someone please explain why "her" in option C does not refer to Basil Ransom but refers to Olive !! I got confused with the pronoun reference here and thus chose E over C. :(

In Option C can some one please explain me her is referring to whom.. isn't it leading to pronoun ambiguity.?

"her" s referring to Olive Chancellor.
I feel, not sure -> Since her is being used in phrase used to describe Basil Ransom, it cannot refer to Basil Ranson. Hence, no ambiguity.

(A) rivalry between Olive Chancellor, an active feminist, with her charming and cynical cousin Basil Ransom,
(B) rivals Olive Chancellor, an active feminist, against her charming and cynical cousin,
(C) rivalry that develops between Olive Chancellor, an active feminist, and Basil Ransom, her charming and cynical cousin,
(D) developing rivalry between Olive Chancellor, an active feminist, with Basil Ransom, her charming and cynical cousin,
(E) active feminist, Olive Chancellor, and the rivalry with her charming and cynical cousin Basil Ransom,
IMO: C
Logic: between X and Y. A, B, and D fail to fulfill this condition.
active feminist and the rivalry -- not parallel.
