Beaten by the GMAT again!

by prachi18oct » Thu Aug 06, 2015 12:22 pm
Hi Experts,

I thought I will be writing this post today with excitement but it isn't time yet.
I gave my GMAT yesterday at 9.30 AM CST and scored 630 Q49 V27 IR 5
This was my second attempt and the first attempt was better atleast in terms of overall score.I scored a 640 Q49 V27 IR 2 last october.

I would brief about my study plan and the materials referred.

I started my preparation again in around February this year. I moved to Chicago in January. I enrolled in the district library and had full access to all the best GMAT materials available.
I referred MGMAT guides, Powerscore CR, OG 13-16.
Although I was studying continuosly all this time, I felt I was not prepared for the test as I never had a date in my mind. So early June I decided to take a date in August, giving myself 2 good months for improving as I already knew the basics. I started giving MGMAT tests as I exhausted GMATPrep tests last year and nearly remembered the questions.
My scores in MGMAT datewise were as below:
June 4 : 680 Q46 V36
June 22 : 630 Q41 V35
July 14 : 660 Q45 V35
July 22 : 690 Q45 V39
July 28 : 700 Q48 V37

Along with these I had veritas practice tests, whose scores are as below:
July 10: 650 Q46 V33
July 18: 640 Q46 V32
July 25: 640 Q44 V34
August 1: 630 Q47 V30

I gave all of these full tests in test conditions as I went to library for each one.
I know that the verbal in actual GMAT is harder than both MGMAT and Veritas tests. What I don't know is how can I perform so outrageously poor in my second attempt.
I clearly remember that during my first attempt I had zoned out in the last 10-15 questions and felt extremely exhausted. This time I was fine strengthwise, and I even remember many questions as I was in my right senses.

I couldn't sleep much the night before as in my previous attempt but I had an early morning slot this time so I was not sleepy and tired. I woke up and went for a walk and then got ready. Everything went normal.
I reached my center on time and started as early as 9.20 AM. AWA was fine. I am a 4.5 level so I feel its workable.
IR was seemingly bad but I decided not to exhaust myself and so I skipped few "large-data diagram" questions and solved the others.
Quants was easier, not sure because I was doing bad or what. After few questions, I had quite some time on my clock. I slowed down and then completed the 37 question with 2 mins on my clock.
During the break, I had banana, chocolate cookie and a glucose drink. Started verbal and it was right on time till 15th question I believe.
The CRs and the SCs are way harder than I practiced in OG.
Although I had a time issue during last 10 questions, I saw my last RC at 31 and I guess around 12-13 mins remaining. I panicked a bit, skimmed the RC and marked the answers. Then came the CR and SC which were quite ok. I randomly guessed one of the CRs as I was not able to comprehend its complexity and moved to SCs.
I somehow felt the SCs and CRs were fine as I could easily spot the errors and match with my prethinked answers. Now I think that feeling itself was wrong.
I could have scored 30-31 but 27 is gross!!
I dont know if I will have the courage to go about third time as I now somehow feel I am no good for MBA.
I used to think I am atleast average but now my confidence has been completely shattered. It seems GMAT is laughing over me again that I can never beat it.

Hi prachi18oct,

I'm sorry to hear that Test Day did not go as well as hoped. A 630/640/Q49 is still a good score though (it's just shy of the 80th percentile overall), so it could very well get you into one of the Schools you're considering. I'm not sure how you're making the 'leap' to the idea that you're "no good for an MBA" though. Your score puts you 'in range' of many great MBA Programs.

Your 2 Official Scores are remarkably similar - to the point that your 'consistency' is both a good thing and a bad thing. However you dealt with the GMAT yesterday is essentially the same as how you dealt with it 9 months ago. So once you learn how to do something a certain way, you're good at repeating it (the good thing), but if you're consistently making the same mistakes, then you can't seem to move past them and improve (the bad thing). There are likely several factors as to why that's happening (even if you can't pinpoint any of them just yet).

Many Test Takers who use a 'book-heavy' study approach end up getting 'stuck' at a particular scoring level, and that's likely a part of what's happened to you. If you plan on retaking the GMAT, then a focus on some non-book resources will almost certainly be a requirement. We don't have to talk about any of that just yet though. I suggest that you take the next few days 'off' and clear your head. If you'd like to discuss all of this in more detail, then you can contact me directly (or post here).

I certainly understand your disappointment, but it's important to remember that large swings in verbal scores are very common. I once had a student who scored V28 on his first attempt and V41 a month later. For you, that would be the difference between a 640 and 730-740. So there's no reason to despair, and it certainly isn't time to give up. You've been an active participant on this forum for some time, so you've surely seen some of the stories in which a test-taker requires 3 or 4 (or more) attempts to hit that target score. Think of this latest result as one data point that will eventually be included as part of your success story. So take a little break to decompress and clear your head. Then this community will help you put together a plan to get that Verbal score up to what it needs to be.
