University X has announced that its library will not be open during the summer. Students attending classes during the summer have protested, saying that the library has research materials that cannot be borrowed from any one public library in the area. The university administration has countered that all university library materials can be accessed online through computers that are provided to all students for free by the university.

Which of the following best describes a method of argument used by the university administration?

The administration counters a proposal with an alternative.

The administration incorrectly makes an assumption about student preferences.

The administration provides an explanation that it assumes will clarify its decision.

The administration defends its actions by criticizing the logic of its opponents.

The administration makes an unwarranted assumption about the motives of some of the students.

it is definitely A : after all all that lib is doing is just suggesting an alternative !! in other words its telling that we r closing down but we are providing the people the alternative to access lib on line
B:The administration incorrectly makes an assumption about student preferences.
the lib never asserts that this new online access will benefit or make the students feel better so they is no assumption lib is making .all that lib is doing is suggesting the alternative as how they may access the lib !!

Confused between A and D. the library is defending its action rather than countering it with an alternative because the online access to library materials for university students was in place already. its not something library decided to offer as an alternative now - after the student protests. D states it is defending its action that by closing during summer break, it is in no way hampering student's access to research materials because they have an alternative online access. it is criticizing students logic who protest they will not have access to research materials.
Hence i think it should be D.
B, C and E are clearly incorrect.
B - university not making any assumptions
C - library not providing an explanation rather it is defending its stance.
E - no assumptions made

Its A.

Analysis :- university decided that library will be closed during summer. Student taking summer classes opposed the decision saying that the library is the only source to access the study material they need during summer classes. University counters the claim saying that study material can be accessed online. Clearly university has reacted to the claim by providing the alternet solution

A) Correct Choice.

B) students preference is to get the study material from any available source. They are not insisted on getting it from library only. Note the line materials that cannot be borrowed from any one public library in the area. Administration then provided an alternative for the same. so the administration certainly did not misinterpret students preferences.

C) Administration has suggested an alternative and not explained or clarified it previous decision.

D) Administration did not criticize the logic of its opponents. It has suggested an alternate source for the fulfillment of demand that the opponents have raised.

E) out of scope. No any motive of any individual has been discussed in the stimulus.
