Archaeologists have shown that ingesting lead in drinking water was a significant health hazard for the ancient Romans, like that of modern Americans.

Key : We need to be comparing 'was a Significant halth hazard for ancient romans' with 'is a significant health hazard for modern americans'

(A) like that of modern Americans - 'that of' is ambiguous
(B) as that for modern Americans - 'that for' is ambiguos and awkward
(C) just as modern Americans do - wrong comparison. its comparing non-extintent actions.
(D) as do modern Americans - wrong comparison. its comparing non-existent actions.
(E) as it is for modern Americans - correct. as it is a significant health hazard for modern americans.

IMO Answer : E

Guys, here i am confused between "B" and "E".
I would want to know what is wrong in "B".. for all those who think "E" is correct ... what does the "it" in "E" refer too..

Why B is wrong
We need to be comparing 'was a Significant halth hazard for ancient romans' with 'is a significant health hazard for modern americans' .
We are doing this comparison for the verb 'ingesting'. 'That for' is ambigous and is not parallel as well.
----
'it' in E refers to 'ingesting lead in drinking water'

I know its not the most convincing explanation. Any expert explanation on this one ?

Why 'it' in option E does not refer to 'health hazard' and instead refers to 'ingesting lead'?

Agree with the above explanation. I don't like "it" in option E, but E is the answer by POE.

I will try ....

the case in hand is to compare X with Y.

our options :

X like Y OR X as Y

Now, we know that X and Y should be ||.

X in our case is : ingesting lead in drinking water , which can be seen as giant noun phrase.

and, we have a form of verb to be (was) following it. So, the construction becomes noun/pronoun + a form of to be (was, is etc).

Now, see what options do you have with you. You will find that only E matches the above construction.

Harsha
