In A and D, suffering from dwindling food supplies incorrectly implies that the FOOD SUPPLIES themselves were the cause of the suffering. Not so: the DWINDLING of the food supplies was the cause of the suffering. While it is possible to suffer from disease or to suffer from madness, it is not possible to suffer from food supplies. Eliminate A and D.massi2884 wrote:A study of food resources in the North Pacific between 1989 and 1996 revealed that creatures of the seabed were suffering from dwindling food supplies, possibly resulting from increasing sea surface temperatures during the same period.
A: that creatures of the seabed were suffering from dwindling food supplies, possibly resulting from increasing
B: that creatures of the seabed were suffering because food supplies were dwindling, possibly as a result of an increase in
C: that creatures of the seabed were suffering because of food supplies, which were dwindling possibly as a result of increasing
D: creatures of the seabed that were suffering from food supplies that were dwindling, possibly resulting from an increase in
E: creatures of the seabed that were suffering because food supplies were dwindling, which possibly resulted from increasing

In C, suffering because of food supplies conveys the same illogical meaning conveyed by A and D. It makes no sense to say that the food supplies themselves were the cause of the suffering. Eliminate C.
In E, a study revealed creatures of the seabed implies that the CREATURES themselves were revealed. The intended meaning is that a study revealed what WAS HAPPENING to the creatures: that they [creatures of the seabed] were suffering. Eliminate E.
The correct answer is B.

i still didnt get whats actually wrong with A
i thought it to be less wordy than B,
also it conveys the meaning clearly.

John was suffering from cancer.A study of food resources in the North Pacific between 1989 and 1996 revealed that creatures of the seabed were suffering from dwindling food supplies, possibly resulting from increasing sea surface temperatures during the same period.
The meaning here is that CANCER was causing John TO SUFFER.
Answer choice A employs the same idiom: creatures were suffering from food supplies.
The implication here is that FOOD SUPPLIES were causing creatures TO SUFFER.
No. Food supplies cannot cause creatures to suffer.
Thus, A does not convey the intended meaning.
Other issues:
It is unclear what is being modified by resulting. Generally, COMMA + VERBing refers to the subject of the preceding clause. Thus, A implies that CREATURES were resulting from increasing food temperatures. Not the intended meaning.
The function of increasing is unclear. The phrase increasing sea temperatures could imply that CREATURES were INCREASING sea temperatures or that TEMPERATURES were INCREASING on their own.

The correct answer is B.
In answer choice B, what does 'possibly as a result of an increase in'serve? what does it modify exactly?
Thanks

Here, the phrase in blue is an ADVERB serving to modify were dwindling.
WHY were food supplies dwindling?
They were dwindling POSSIBLY AS A RESULT OF AN INCREASE IN SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURES.

Hi Mitch,
I`m sorry to open this thread again. but please help me to explain why DWINDLING FOOD SUPPLIES does not modify the cause of suffering but food supplies themself. And what is the role of Dwindling in choice A.
thanks so much.

thanks so much.
Here, dwindling is an ADJECTIVE serving to describe food supplies.
Question: What KIND of food supplies?
Answer: DWINDLING food supplies.
As a result, the conveyed meaning is that creatures were suffering from a particular type of food supply (dwindling food supplies).
