by necromancer_678 » Wed Jun 10, 2009 1:12 pm
773). The last “wild” Indian in North America, according to anthropologist Alfred Kroeber, was the lone survivor of California’s lost Yahi tribe, which staggered out of the mountains near Lassen Peak in 1912, deep in mourning for the last of his companions, expecting to be butchered and eaten by white ranchers.

(A) which

(B) who

(C) that

(D) the survivor having

(E) having

Kindly explain.

I would go with B

We are talking about a person, so 'who' would be appropriate.

what is wrong with E) having.

the answer is D.
which, that and having can be easily ruled out. who is ambigous, can refer to the professor. Hence the answer: D.

IMO 'C'. 'Yahi tribe' is a group and we use 'that' to modify a group.

sorry I missed to see that the sentence is talking about the individual, the lone survivor. IMO as we are using 'of' construction here [the lone survivor of California’s lost Yahi tribe] , 'B' is the right choice.

ya but the doubt was ...if we use "who" then the antecedent isn clear ...

"who" can also refer to the anthropologist Alfred Kroeber.

But don't you think that 'touch rule' applies here because 'who' is touching 'the lone survivor of California’s lost Yahi tribe'.

(A) which

(B) who

(C) that

(D) the survivor having

(E) having

Kindly explain.
well first I choosed E , then I saw the sentence that The last “wild” Indian..........was the lone survivor of......., In this case , I'm left with B or E , ''which'' absolutely does not modify the person . That can modify person , yet who is better than that. The surviving having , awkward , vague..
