Unlike that of human beings, who waste away when they go without food for long periods, hibernating bears exist for months on only their excess fat.
(B) Unlike human beings, who waste away when they go
(C) Unlike human beings, wasting away when going
Comma + Ving modifier modifies to previous clause ( S and V setup) but here I see only noun.
B - correctly uses "who waste away when they go" which modifies to noun.

There's a parallelism issue separating B and C. The sentence compares what happens to human beings when they don't eat with the idea that "hibernating bears exist for months..." Waste is parallel to exist; wasting is not, since it uses the -ing form.

Experts could you guys please help on this one.nicktimoshenko wrote:Unlike that of human beings, who waste away when they go without food for long periods, hibernating bears exist for months on only their excess fat.

I narrowed down to B and C. But I dont get the difference. Is it because of parallelism or because 'comma + Ing' should modify a clause while here, it is modifying a noun?
Thanks in advance,
