Bloomberg GMAT Tutor - Complete Prep
Very effective and efficient GMAT Prep Program!

Knowing that the GMAT is one of the most challenging exams, I have invested a lot of time in searching for the most efficient and effective preparation material as I wanted to score above 700 and take the test only once. As the GMAT will be taken on a computer, I was looking for a digital study method to get used to answering questions on a screen rather than in front of a book. Luckily, I came across the Bloomberg Exam Prep! The team at Bloomberg has created a platform with an AI Tutor, which accordingly adapts the GMAT study plan to your target score, your study progress, and learning success. I have studied for the exam only with Bloomberg's AI Tutor and have scored 720 on the actual GMAT! Quant Prep Review: The AI Tutor explains and teaches all the math concepts as well as helpful problem-answering strategies in order for you to be able to quickly solve the problems. You can study at your own pace and repeat and reread the lections as often as you like. What I found really effective was that the AI Tutor shows you the underlying concepts behind the math problems because this additional understanding has helped me a lot to identify the correct answer choice quickly which is advantageous in answering difficult questions in under two minutes. A further fact that I liked about the program is that it measures the time you take to answer each question and shows you various ways in which you could have reached the correct answer. Further, the AI Tutor indicates how often you answer questions correctly per topic and repeats questions from your "problem topic areas" more frequently to really fine-tune your practice. In my opinion, this makes each study session productive and effective. Lastly, I also used the "ask a tutor"-tool for a few questions where I did not understand the calculations, and each time a member from the Bloomberg team responded immediately and took the time to explain each step in the calculation for me. Verbal Prep Review: Being a non-native English speaker, I have a lot of respect for the verbal section. However, the platform explains very logically its so-called "stop signs" with which you can identify what topic the GMAT Question is testing to avoid making common mistakes and to increase your chance of choosing the right answer choice. What I found really helpful are the tips for the Reading Comprehension section, which I was most afraid of. The strategy to tackle these reading passages has definitely helped me save time, stay focused on the important parts, and remain confident and calm when answering these question types. I would not have scored a 41 in the verbal section, which is the 94th percentile, as a non-native English speaker without the tips from the Bloomberg program! All in all, I am very happy that I enrolled in this program. I think that the Bloomberg program has definitely contributed to my GMAT score of 720 as their tips and realistic problem questions have prepared me well for the really difficult questions I needed to answer correctly in order to crack the 700. Currently, Bloomberg offers the complete program for free ("COVID-19 Deposit") which is great and very generous! You will have to deposit a fraction of the course price but will get the deposit back after you have practiced with the program and have taken the GMAT. I would recommend the Bloomberg Exam Prep Program with the AI Tutor to anyone who wants to achieve a high GMAT score!

My view on the the GMAT, which I started studying 11 months ago, is that it is a very difficult exam. Once your mindset is aligned you start to appreciate the joy of it, but until then it is a long road. Some people may be good on both Quant and Verbal 'by default', but the fact is the majority are not otherwise the average score would not be just above 550 points.
When I did the trial test right at the beginning of my studying period I got a poor score. I decided to join the GMAT Economist because I was told it was an excellent programme. And it is. It is far more effective than reading through books because the entire training is interactive, intuitive, and easy to understand and memorize. 7 months later my mock exams were already at 740 points. This was a massive improvement.
I attained 720 point s in the official test. This journey was an impressive 200 points improvement, so yes I highly recommend the GMAT Economist.

I also tried many free trials of online courses but they all had considerable flaws (at least from my perspective).
The main pro of this course is that it provides each topic with some framework to tackle that kind of problem.
I haven't found any comparable, easy-to-use frameworks in any other course.
Also , if you get a problem wrong, the problem is proposed to you again after sometime, effectively making sure that you have understood the theory behind it, and not just read through the solution.
Still on the plus side I would like to note that: the app was easy to use and provided on the go support, on the web version the program provided daily objectives that helped a lot in following the study program.
To be exhaustive, I'll also provide some areas in which I think there is room for improvement, that weren't relevant to me but might be to someone else:
- the app didn't have all the features of the online version and could be improved
- after you are done with a topic you can't review it again, only a synthesis will be available
- daily study objectives are pretty standard each day and should have been more tailored
Must-buy for individualistic learners who hate rote learning systems

The format of the Economist GMAT website is so beautiful; you start with basic concepts and further difficult concepts are unlocked as you proceed further, so it all feels like playing a game! Any doubts are cleared by their tutors instantly and the solutions given for each question are so conversational, you feel as if it's a friend talking to you. They also have an excellent mobile app, which I used while commuting, thus ensuring that I was losing no time at all.
The online video sessions with the tutors are super helpful, since they give you methods, tips & tricks to solve any type of question. These online tutorials really boosted my score, especially the ones with the tutor Jake Wengroff.
AWA essay templates provided by the course are also brilliant.
Overall, this course made my life more comfortable during the GMAT, boosted my score in a huge way and allowed me to choose and design my own study method.

3 months ago, I started with the GMAT Complete Prep, which helped me to better structure my preparation and to point out which topics I needed to practice again. I improved my score to 740 [Verbal 96th percentile, Quant 74th percentile].
Pros:
- Clear theory and methodology per topic
- Practice tests help you spot weaknesses and accurately mimic the actual GMAT [I scored 760, 720, 770 on my last 3 practice tests and scored a 740 on the actual test]
- Friendly and helpful customer service and tutors
Cons
- After completing a topic, only a brief summary is shown. Not all different topics can be practiced again, and the ones that can sometimes use the same practice questions. This can erroneously make you think you fully comprehend the topic, while you actually just memorized the answer/question.
- For Verbal (Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning), no concrete tips are given regarding taking notes when deconstructing the argument/passage
- Less focused on IR and AWA.

I thought the Quant sections were easy to understand and full of great time-saving tricks. For example, I learned several tricks on sequences that saved me valuable minutes on the real exam. The Verbal sections were intuitive and QUICK - I felt super confident going into the Verbal section even though it was maybe 20% of the overall course content.
I used two of the live tutoring sessions to brush up on a few concepts, and I found them more useful than I'd predicted. The tutors were diligent in taking notes and emailing them out after our video sessions. Finally, the practice exams (I found) were an accurate predictor of my final score on test day. This program was intuitive and well-worth it. I barely glanced at any other prep materials and got a great result.

130 Point Increase - Great Adaptive Learning!
- Teacher:
- Recommended for —Verbal: Yes Math: Yes
- GMAT Scores —Before: 600 After: 730
Economist GMAT had a relentless focus on strategy as a whole, and strategy within each question type. I never would have thought that I'd be getting so many difficult problems correct, or that I would be able to diagnose "lost causes" so quickly.
While learning all of the fundamental sentence correction rules and math formulas can be very boring, Economist GMAT's adaptive learning program kept me focused and moving forward. It helped me build a strong base that I'm not sure I otherwise would have been able to create.
Economist GMAT's explanations are second to none. Every question helped me understand the fundamentals, and their adaptive program recognized areas of weaknesses and forced me to spend more time on them. It also forced me to revisit questions I had gotten wrong in the past.
I do feel that I wish that Economist GMAT had an option to focus exclusively on advanced topics when I was "approaching the asymptote" rather than leaving the difficulty of practice problems to chance.

In retrospect I can only recommend to take time management (as taught in the program) seriously. Fisrtly, I personally underestimated the importance by far. After I got into it a little, I boosted my prep exam scores from 640 up to 720.
I felt that because of the score increase or money-back-guarante I would have nothing to lose by taking this course.
However, my expactations have been exceeded by far. I even used the app on the subway and loved the simple design, as well as the ease of use. I only started to learn with official questions from MBA.com two days prior to taking the exam. I do believe that wasn't very wise, but proofse to me that the Economist prep is right on track and prepared me well enough.

The biggest downside to the program is its lack of flexibility. When you sign up, you are locked into a time frame (3 or 6 months) and have to pay extra to extend. I can honestly say that the Economist GMAT Tutor was the best preparation tool I could use. It's a very friendly program and it really taught me everything I needed to know in order to secure a good score. I was really impressed with the Verbal lessons, they carefully walk you through all the grammar you need for SC in a very interactive way. The RC and CR tips were also very effective.
The tutoring sessions helped me a lot, the tutors are really helpful and have plenty of experience with all kinds of students, so they know in which direction they need to point you. The advice I got from them, especially the tips on strategy, sure made a difference.
All things considered, I think that the Economist GMAT Tutor is a worthwhile investment if you want a good score and I warmly suggest it to anyone planning to take the GMAT.

Amazing Prep Software

The verbal sections are broken down well into bite-sized chunks that can be easily cross-referenced with the solutions in the official guide, so the synergy between the two is great. I relied less on the quant section than I did the verbal, but it does a great job of introducing difficult topics and easy ones alike.
The practice tests are different than GMATPrep, but effective. They always seemed to focus on topics that I struggled with. There was about a 70-100 point difference between these and my final official score.
Lastly, for those topics that you ju st can't figure out, the one-on-one tutoring sessions are amazing. I highly recommend Jake Wengroff not only as an excellent instructor, but as an avid supporter of my success. He took personal interest in me and my weaknesses, and gave me motivation when I needed it most. Especially useful sessions included a review of GMATPrep practice test questions that I missed. It was great to observe his question-answering process.
Overall, highly recommend. Especially if you are looking to dramatically improve your verbal score.

I was very happy with my experience with the program and even more happy to see my score increase by 250 points. I had 7 days of free trial before I pay for the course. At the end of the free trial I completed almost 10% of the course and was definitely convinced that it's worth spending.
Overall, the course content and methods explained in both Verbal and Quant were very helpful. I was comfortable with the format and my course progress. However, 25% down the course I took the second practice test and got 640. This got me worried and I decided to use the live strategy sessions with GMAT tutors. I got some good advice from Isaac who helped me improve my time management issues. Although, it took me 2 more GMAT practice test to figure out the most optimal way to manage the time, once I figured my score was consistently over 670.
I scored a 690 on my last practice test with Economist and scored 690 and 710 on 2 mba.com tests. Eventually, on the D day, I got 690 (V33 Q50).
I was able to cover most of the topics (although took me 6 months since I am a busy full-time working professional). The tests were great and similar to the real test. Also, the live sessions were helpful in assessing the practice tests and discussing customized strategies based on the performance.
Overall, my experience with Economist was good. I would recommend this course to people who are busy working professionals and prefer to prepare at their own pace.

Fully interactive, you begin with courses that include relevant exercises. As you progress and after taking your first practice test, the exercises become harder, and more tailored to your profile.
The lessons and tricks they teach helped me tremendously in my progression.
After one month of practice, I took my first practice test, and got a mere 630, which was quite demoralizing. Yet, after completing half of the course, I began taking practice tests every two weeks, and continuing the course itself. Eventually, I scored 740 on the actual GMAT.
I would recommend this course to anyone who is completely unfamiliar with the GMAT.
The only one drawback, however, is that there is no way to select the topics of the exercises you want to work on. This could have been tremendously helpful in the later stages of my prep. Something I hope they will improve on!

Very good tutor

How it works:
0. I would strongly recommend to take the free trial to see how it works.
1. Before you start to study you have to choose the length of the lesson you want to have. This is very comfortable, I would choose to study 1 hour at lunchtime in my office, 20 minutes in the subway on my way home (there I would do sentence correction) and 1 hour when I got home. I also prevented me to be in too much time in front of the screen without being productive, because after each session I would go have something to eat, have a cigarette, etc.
2. When you start studying the tutor will choose a study plan for you, so for example in 1 hour you can get to study Verbal and Quant.
3. After a few months of studying (and after doing your practice exams) the tutor will go into an "exercise mode" ; you will basically get only exercises, but if you want to review a certain subject you can re-study it by yourself.
Pros:
- You can choose when and where to study. In my case I work over 9 hours a day so I didn't want to go to a classroom after my work, I just wanted to study in mi pajamas in my desk at home. Also I did study on Sundays.
- Very similar to the actual GMAT experience. Since you are always in front of a screen and the tutor shows you how long you take to solve each problem you get a very precise feeling on how long you take to solve a problem.
- Good explanations: The tutor explains you very clearly the solution to each problem.
- Tutor sessions: The tutor gives you a certain number of Skype tutor sessions. The tutors are top levels and if you want to study a certain subject they are very useful.
- Sentence corrections: Since I am a non-native English speaker, it was particularly important to study the verbal part. In Critical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension, there is not much you can do in my opinion. Specially not in a short amount of time. But Sentence Correction is a subject you can get better at. The tutor is extremely good at this subject and in my case I improved a lot.
Cons:
- The only thing I can think of is that if you go into practice mode (just exercises) you can not choose what type of problems to get in Quant; you can choose between DS and PS questions, but if you feel for example weak in probabilities you can not tell the tutor to give you just this kind of problems. Anyway, you can always search on forums the type of problems you feel weak at, solve them, and continue with the tutor.

1. Adaptive - tailors content and exercises to your weakest topics so you can zip through your strongest areas and focus on what you need to practice more
2. Predicted score - adds a level of gamification to the process. It was satisfying to see my predicted score go up week on week, and my final score was within the predicted range. Great accuracy.
3. Skype tutoring sessions - although I didn't take full advantage of this, I would recommend doing 2-3 tutoring sessions if you learn best by walking through exercises with a tutor. Great value compared to spending thousands on in-person tutoring.
My score went up 90 points after taking 80% of the course (I took the test only a couple of months into the course).
Overall, would recommend.

I'll preface by saying I didn't study at all, and the first practice test I took was through the Economist and I got a 550. My quant was in the 30th percentile, but my verbal was already in the 80th.
By the end, my quant was in the 70th percentile and my verbal improved to the 90th percentile. Although the quant is very good, I felt like the questions near the end of the program were too easy and that I needed to find some harder question to push my thinking and expose myself to harder questions.
And overall I thought the Economist sentence correction questions were much easier than the official ones, so if you get the opportunity, I would prep with difficult ones.
Overall a good product and even though my improvement may be an outlier, it should drastically help you.

I found the economist GMAT course online after searching for a GMAT course score guarantee. It amazed me that I could go up 70 points with no risk through the economist. I started the Exonomist the day after my first GMAT exam with the hopes of getting a 720.
I found the course to be extremely helpful! The quant section was especially good. It changed to show me more questions of what I needed help on and fewer questions for things that I already knew. I really liked how the course had a score estimate and a percent complete tracker. I also had great sessions with Jake Wengroff, my tutor for all but one of the sessions. You can't pick your tutor in the system but he and I were able to book appointments offline that he would then add to the system so that it would guarantee that he was my tutor. He was really great and I would recommend him for sure!
The verbal section I found helpful, but the sentence correction section didn't seem to be as difficult as the real exam. My verbal score went from a 40 to a 41, so really there was not much improvement there from my first real exam to my last real exam. My quant went up from 40 to a 45. I'm very pleased with my progress. Although I did not get the 700 points that they guarantee I plan on extending my subscription so that I can take the exam again in September and will hopeful ly go up 20 or more points. In all I would recommend the eco moist to anyone. It is possible to get to 700!! You just have to keep working at it.

Working a full-time job, a regular class-room course wouldn't work for me and I would not be able to fully utilize even the best course in that setting.
The way that the Economist GMAT tutor allowed me to utilize even the smallest bit of time available to prepare and the ease at which my course could be set or reset according to my preferences made a huge difference to my preparation.
All courses improve scores by some amount. However, I can confidently say that the Economist GMAT tutor does even more - it allows the test-taker to identify his/her level to a more accurate degree, meaning that I could go into the test confident that I was going to be fairly close to my target, and so it proved.
A special mention to tutors Jake Wengroff and Kasia Slawinska. Jake worked with me very early on in my prep, teaching me the basics of what the GMAT would be like, how I need to tackle it and what the best methods were to increase efficiency and reduce stress. He'd also helped me with a lot of work on Quants and gave me some very useful tips for test-day preparation. Kasia had worked with me around 10-15 days before the test, teaching me how to accelerate my preparation and plan how best to use the remaining time I had . I cannot commend highly enough the influence of those two on my preparation.

1) Customizable: Economist doesn't let you customize your lessons. You can select quant or Verbal but within those two, they won't let you choose what you need to work on like the other preps. So if you understand 7 things already and need to work on 3, they make you go through all 10 before you can move on. And God forbid what you need is way down in their lessons, you have to go through everything before it. After emailing them a few times, they said I can check a box that says pick your own lessons, but I tried this twice and it didn't work.
2) Tutoring: The Tutors only work on what you've covered in THEIR course. I've emailed them about questions I had in the original guide but they said I need to go over what they've taught first about that topic. And if that topic is 40-50 lessons down, I have to go through all the topics before I can get a tutor to help me with what I need help in.
3) Strange format: They have this weird prompt screen asking you questions like "Is the math on the GMAT harder than high school math" on the way to the questions you need. You have to keep answering these to move on. I found this a waste of time and I just moved on to the other prep courses out of frustration
4) Refund: Forget about it. If you tell them the course isn't working for you and you would like to use the money on something that is more conducive to your learning, they won't do it. Instead they'll write you long paragraphs about how their course is the best and there's no need to look elsewhere.
5) 5000 practice questions: These aren't in the form of a question bank. I emailed them about this. They said you'll get a total of 5000 questions if you keep answering their questions on their weird path they have designed for you. I wish I had known this before because this was one of the main reasons I purchased it.
I've had the most frustrating experience with them and wish I never paid. It is partially my fault because I should have tried the week trial fully before buying it. However, I thought the lessons were just locked because I hadn't paid yet. But no... you have to go through everything.
So basically I lost $1000 and can't get it back. I am now studying using a bunch of other prep courses because Economist didn't have what I needed and their teaching style did nothing for me. Others might have had a positive experience, but this was mine.

Eventually, the portal also gave me many hacks for quants which I could use in the practice tests. When used in combination with OGs, The Economist GMAT Tutor can work wonders.

-I work a full-time job so I loved that you can complete a session whenever and for however long you want.
-The topics and answer explanations were clear and easy to follow.
-Really liked the time tracker for each question as well as the breakdown in how much time you had spent on Quant and Verbal topics.
-During the 1-week trial I took the free practice test and scored a 610 (Q43, V32, IR2) which I also felt reasonably correlated with my original GMATprep test score.
I knew December would be a difficult month for me to study, so I waited until the beginning of January to sign up for the Ultimate Prep, and the same week I signed up to take the real GMAT on April 1. This was a good time to sign up for the course because the rates were discounted for the New Year. I went for the 6-month Ultimate Prep for the 70-point guarantee and because I anticipated I was going to need to take the test more than once (just based on my experience with the SATs).
Over the next 3-months I studied for about 1.5 hours/day on the weekdays (about 1 hour on Quant and 30 mins on Verbal) and 2 hours/day ay on the weekend. I loved that the course was self-paced, and that it kept track of my progress. I felt like the Quant topics were great and the answer explanations were thorough and easy to understand. The Quant review helped me immensely, and I learned valuable strategies as to how to approach certain questions. I also loved that as you completed more and more topics, the course adapted to your strengths and weaknesses. If you are weak in a particular area, the course really hammers in the material/questions on that topic until you start answering the questions correctly. In terms of the Verbal, I knew that my main weaknesses were CR and SC and the course really focused on these topics. I thought the Stop Signs for SC were useful and helped teach me what common mistakes to look out for in the sentences. During the 3-months leading up to my test I took 5 of the Economist practice test and the second free GMATprep test. My scores were as follows:
1) Feb 18, 590 (Q37, V32, IR4) Economist
2) March 11, 620 (Q47, V29, IR4) Economist
3) March 15, 690 (Q50, V36, IR5) Economist
4) March 18, 680 (Q45, V40, IR5) Economist
5) March 22, 680 (Q43, V42, IR3) Economist
6) March 25, 650 (Q47, V43, IR8) GMATprep test 2
During this 3-month preparation time I also utilized four of the personal tutoring sessions. I can't stress enough how important these sessions were for my progress. I had all of my tutoring sessions with Jake Wengroff and he was AMAZING! We mainly focused on debriefing my practice tests and going through questions I answered incorrectly. One of my biggest hurdles with the GMAT was the timing, and Jake helped me learn timing strategies as well as when it was ok to guess on certain questions. Jake mostly helped me with Quant, but in later sessions we focused more on SC/CR and his help in the verbal section was also great! On top of all of this, Jake is also incredibly nice and supportive. He really helped me deal with my some of my test-taking anxiety.
After months of studying I ended up taking the GMAT on April 1 and scoring a 660 (Q48, V33, IR6, AWA 5.5). I was happy with my improvement on the Quant section, but due to lack of sleep the night before and accidently starting the Verbal section late, I didn?t feel that this score reflected my true ability.
From my first test, it was clear I still needed to do some work on the Verbal section. I think the Economist course is great for teaching strategies on how to approach questions on the Verbal section, but I believe the biggest weakness of the course is that some of the Verbal questions do not closely align with official GMAT questions. I always did very well with the official RC questions, but I found the Economist RC questions to be incredibly difficult. I found the Economist SC questions were good practice, but they were often too easy and seemed to follow a formula. I found the official SC questions to be much more difficult. I felt the Economist CR closely aligned with the real thing. For the Quant, I felt the practice questions were on par with the official questions.
I decided to retake the test on May 20, but for the remaining 1.5 months of study time, I continued to do the Economist Quant practice questions and heavily focus on OG Verbal questions. I also had a three additional tutoring sessions with Jake in which we went over the last two practice tests I had taken before the big day. Come test day, I was able to achieve an overall score of 710 (Q47, V40, IR4, AWA6)!!!! The score forecaster on the Economist software estimated my score would be between 680-740, so this was right on target! In the end, I completed 89% of the Quant material (70 hours), and 86% of the Verbal (42 hours).
I also just want to quickly comment on the IR and AWA portions of the course. The Economist IR questions were reasonable, however, the course review for this section is fairly limited. If you need more work with IR, you may need to seek additional resources. For AWA, I thought the template was great and I used the exact template on the real exam. I submitted three essays for review, and while the feedback was useful, it does take around a week to get a response, so plan accordingly.
I know this a long-winded review, but I 100% believe I could not have achieved this score without this course and Jake?s help! The course may be somewhat pricey, but I think it was worth every penny!

On the other hand, I very much appreciated the Skype tutoring sessions which are included in the course. All lessons were very well organised and were very effective. Also, the five practice exams that the course provides to all students were very good for practicing and provided great explanations in case one does not understand a question.
Overall, I still consider the price for this course way to high and I would therefore not recommend this course. After my first trial, I waited approximately 2 months and studied with the Magoosh Course. Within three weeks, I jumped from 510 (Q37; V23) to 660 (Q46; V35).
Good luck!

I started with the trial run and took my first test and scored a 650 on my first practice test. I enjoyed the flexibility of the program, as I am a college student with a lot of time on my hands and wanted to be able to study on my own time. I studied for around 2 hours every day five days a week.
I am an Applied Math major at school so I thought I would be prepared for the quantitative section. However, on my first test I scored very poorly. I believe that the Economist Quant prep is extremely helpful in giving you the right ways to approach problems. Certain problems that originally took me 5-7 minutes to solve, however, after using the approaches given to me by the Economist tutor, I could solve them in 1-2 minutes.
The adaptive nature of the program is extremely useful. This way certain types of problems that I just couldn't get right originally I easily mastered and problems that I knew how to solve easily originally I didn't waste time on.
I believe the verbal prep also must be among the best. I originally scored about where I thought I should on my practice test, as I do not have strong verbal and grammatical skills. The "Stop Signs" the program used were a great way to identify possible errors in sentence correction. The critical reasoning practice problems were also great and nearly identical to the real test. I believe that the reading comprehension in the GMAT tutor was slightly more difficult than the real exam but definitely helped me prepare.
I completed a little over 80% of the course and in the last two weeks started working more on the GMAT Offical problems in the app they give. I think that using the tutor to have a solid background and familiarity with the types of problems they give and then working on official problems and tests was the best approach for me.
I didn't take as much advantage of the in-app questions and tutoring sessions as I could have. However, the sessions I did have were informative and helpful. They really look at the data and your progress in order to give you helpful and critical feedback.
I scored much lower on all the practice tests I took on the Economist program than I did on the real test--my highest score was a 720. However, I believe that that has more to do with my test taking mentality rather than the difficulty of the real tests as my highest practice score on the Official program was also a 720.
Overall I would definitely recommend the Economist GMAT Tutor, especially if you want to study on your own time.

The best part about the course are all of the practice problems. When you get a question wrong, it not only tells you what the correct answer is, but also why the answer you selected is wrong. You have the opportunity to send an "ask a tutor" inquiry if there are questions that you still don't understand after reading the explanation. I ended up only needing to use about 20 out of 50 available "ask a tutor" inquiries because the explanations provided are so thorough.
After completing the Economist GMAT Prep Course in 2.5 months, I improved my score by 130 points and achieved my target score of 720. I highly recommend the Economist GMAT course!

I felt really comfortable working with the desktop version as well as the mobile app e.g. on my way to work. You can choose between 5 minute and 60 minute sessions on either quant or verbal or both combined. Tasks that were not answered correctly can be reviewed instantly and are noted by the software. Then, over time it gives you less of your strong tasks and more new topics with your weak spots frequently in between.
I started with a text exam right away and so the adaptive nature of the software got hold of my strengths and weaknesses pretty quickly. Obviously this is generally a huge advantage of software over classic book learning. Unfortunately I realized that far too late, otherwise I would have spend all 3 months of prep just with the Economist app. On the other hand I does make a lot of sense to work at least with GMAT material from two different companies in order to have a comparison.
Due to the insights from the test exam I focused solely on improving the quantative section, where the Economist app provides a massive amount of excercises. Although I spent three weeks only in the quant section I hardly managed to finish 50% of the quant section.
I am sure that the app it helped me to especially work on my weaknesses and that it deserves a huge part of the credits for my 650. Since I just got accepted to my first BS choice I can say that the 350$ were a good investment. They have different payment plans from which my option was the cheapest. It is valid for three months (one week free trial in advance) and comes with the study material + 3 test GMATs, 1 essay review, 20 ask a tutor questions via a chat interface.
Since then I have always recommended this app to anybody who asked me for GMAT prep recommendations.

One point for improvement is the time it takes for AWA essays to be graded. It usually takes 1 week and if your GMAT is quickly approaching, it might be a limitation to the number of essays you will be able to submit.
However, the core curriculum which is the most important component was great. The opportunity to take tutor sessions aids your preparation and you can work on your weaknesses. The system offers predicted score which in my case was accurate and it gives you more ambition to work harder in order to get to your goal.
To sum up, I highly recommend the Economist GMAT Tutor and it's a great tool for preparation!

The course is computer adapative. You will have the questions on the same topic until you ace it. You cannot move to another chapter if you don't do reasonnably well on the previous. The one to one tutor session via skype is really valuable. I was abe to talk to my tutors who gave me precious advice to strenghen my weaknesses , to manage efficiently the time. They even go through my simulation tests and tell me how to do improve my score.
It proposes a really time saving template to write essays.
I found the verbal courses good too but less effective as I am not a native.

Would highly recommend - it takes away the burden of managing the process of studying
- Teacher: Jake Wengroff
- Recommended for —Verbal: Yes Math: Yes
- GMAT Scores —Before: N/A After: 720
Why I recommend GMAT Tutor to everyone:
1. The adaptive learning component.
This is the main reason I would highly recommend it. When working full time, you?re just so busy you barely have time to study, and don't have time to ?manage? the process of studying. I felt like the GMAT Tutor took the load of managing the process of studying off me and enables me to just focus on understanding the content and practicing.
How it does this: GMAT Tutor feeds you learning and practice materials at a pace that is custom to what you do well at. If you rock the geometry stuff, it'll fly you through that section. If you struggle, it'll give you more practice problems there and keep coming back to it over time until you've mastered it. The GMAT itself is an adaptive test, and I really appreciated this component of the GMAT Tutor program. It takes the stress and burden of coming up with your own study plan. All you have to do is log in and press start, and it feeds you what you need.
2. The flexibility of the online sessions.
I could study whenever and wherever I wanted, and select how many minutes I wanted to study. I found a lot of value in doing quant drills without pen/paper on the mobile app when I was in a taxi or wanted a 5 minute break from work. Also, the progress and score projection tracking made it feel like a game--I enjoyed watching my progress % and score projection range go up after every session and it made me excited to study.
3. The Skype tutoring sessions and in-app question feature.
If I came across a piece of content or a practice problem that I struggled with, I could click a button on that box and jot down an email to a real person, who would respond via email within a day or two. The tutors I met with over Skype were also very helpful--having someone explain difficult concepts and work on tough problems with me was valuable. I also appreciated the opportunity to have a handful of practice essays graded and returned with comments.
Compared to other options: While I didn't take an in-person class, I know the cost of a class is typically higher, it's definitely less convenient, and you go at the class pace instead of your own.
I did buy the Manhattan textbooks and did a focused 3-months of GMAT prep with them before switching to GMAT Tutor. I found it very difficult to know what topics on which to focus my study with the books, and felt I wasted a lot of time going through content I didn't need to spend so much time on. Additionally, I felt like my motivation to study had to come from sheer discipline, while it was so much easier to just jump on and press Go on a GMAT Tutor session.

630 to 710 with Economist GMAT
- Teacher: Self-Directed
- Recommended for —Verbal: Yes Math: Yes
- GMAT Scores —Before: N/A After: 710
With a full time job and long workday hours, doing a series of weekend prep courses was not a good option for me. I was looking for a program that I could use in my free time and would let me study for 15 minutes or 4 hours depending on my schedule. I used the 7 day trial (which I recommend anyone should do before considering the purchase) and was hooked.
I was especially impressed with the full explanations provided for every answer in the Verbal section. Those were extremely helpful for understanding the structure of arguments and subtle grammar and style issues in sentence correction questions.
I studied engineering in university, so the majority of the math concepts were familiar to me. However, on some of the GMAT questions, I had trouble solving the questions in the recommended 2 minute window. The big advantage of the Economist program is that it teaches you shortcuts and quick ways to solve tricky problems, and gives you multiple tools to solve the problems. Further, after every question, the program asks you "How long do you think you took to answer the question?" This is especially helpful to get a feel for timing and pacing. You are taught not only how to answer questions correctly, but also to be aware of the big picture and how far off pace you might be.
Some other great features of the program are that you can have multiple one on one skype tutoring sessions with tutors from around the world (I highly recommend Jake Wengroff), you can submit written essays for the AWA portion and get them graded by real people, and you can submit any kind of question through their "Ask a Tutor" feature. The responses you get back are often very detailed and helpful.
Finally, studying with this program is addictive. Just like the real GMAT exam, the program features adaptive algorithms that target your weakest areas and force you to practice those. Once you have completed a certain set of questions, a % complete graph will project a possible range of scores for you. This is addictive because the projected score tends to increase the more you study, so I found that I was always looking forward to the next study session so I could move the projected score up higher and higher. I wrote 6 practice exams with the program, all of which were in the project range; therefore, I believe it was a fair estimate of my abilities.
In total, I spent 75 hours going through about 85% of the course content and practice questions. I wrote 6 sim tests and scored the following:
Format: Score (IR, Quant, Verbal)
630 (3, 42, 36)
660 (6, 48, 34)
660 (3, 51, 31)
710 (5, 46, 43)
710 (6, 50, 38)
730 (6, 50, 41)
I submitted 3 essays for AWA and was graded 5.5, 5.5-6.0, and 5.5-6.0.
On my real GMAT I scored:
710 (8, 49, 37) with a 6.0 on AWA. 91% percentile.
I hope to apply to an MBA program in 2018 and am confident that this score will get me into my first choice school, hopefully with a big scholarship.

Breaking 700

Since I regularly work long hours, the only real option for me was to take a self-paced course. Thus, with three months to go before the test date, I signed up for free trials for both the MGMAT and the Economist GMAT Tutor program. And after only one day, I was 100% sure that the Economist tool was going be ?my? tool in getting ready to finally beat the GMAT. Here is why:
As opposed to the MGMAT tool, the Economist tool does not use videos, meaning that you have to read all the content and answer explanations. Moreover, you constantly have to answer both short review questions and actual test questions as you work through the material. If you ? like me ? are the kind of person who studies late and easily loses focus when watching videos, the Economist tool will certainly work much better for you.
The Economist tool also makes it really easy for you to track your progress as it gives you a lot of detail on the time spent studying, the percentage of completed content and an approximate score estimate. The last two features in particular were a game changer for me because practicing thereby became kind of a computer game.
The algorithm running the Economist prep tool really hones in on your weaknesses and spends much less time on your strengths. For example, I completed 90% of the verbal content in a quarter of the time that it took me to complete 90% of the quant material (note that quant has been my weakness all along). Moreover, you do not need to use material, which makes studying all the more efficient (although I do recommend using the OG for the last two weeks of your prep).
As far as the Economist GMAT tutor?s CATs go, I feel that they are pretty accurate in measuring how you will do on the actual test. My scores after finishing all the content were 720, 670, 700 and 710 and I ended up scoring a 700 on the actual test.
Additionally, the Economist GMAT Tutor offers a score guarantee, meaning that you are guaranteed a 70 point improvement from your base score (which I set at 610 points during my free one-week trial) if you sign up for the 3-month trial. Since my target score was a 680 this was all the more incentive to sign up. After all, if hadn?t reached my target score, I would at least have gotten my money back.
AWA: The AWA templates are really helpful. If you are really weak in writing though, I can see how the templates alone will not do much for you. Definitely use the essay grading feature ? the personalized feedback you get on your essays is pretty good.
IR: To me, this is definitely the ?weak spot? of the Economist GMAT tutor. For my taste, there are far too little questions in the question bank to allow for a thorough preparation. Moreover, the CATs do not have an on-screen calculator like on the real test.
Quant: The quant sections is amazing! The Economist tool has it all: simple explanations, a huge question bank, and good tutors (you get up to six one-on-one tutoring sessions via Skype) about any topic you choose. Moreover, the algorithm really hammers test taking strategies (e.g. POE, approximations, etc.) into your brain and literally forces you to approach quant problems the way you should.
Verbal: I cannot seriously say much about the helpfulness of the verbal sections as I scored above the 90th percentile from the beginning.
Last but not least, I want to mention how helpful Isaac was as a tutor for my ?strategy sessions?. Although my first session with him was a rough awakening (he pretty much told me that much of what I had been doing was ineffective), he completely changed my approach to the test itself. If it wasn?t for him (and his super helpful timing charts) I would have never been able to exceed my target score and get a 700 on the actual test! Thanks!

Strong recommendation for Economist GMAT prep

I first signed up for the 7 day trial of the Economist GMAT tutor and felt that it would be the complete review I needed. I knew that I would have to space my studying out over multiple months, so I had to rework my first study approach. The course is great in that it allows you to work at your own pace and if you can make time to do an hour or two a day over a couple months, you will have worked your way through the majority of the material. I found that the course helped me identify some of the nuances seen in the harder level questions that can be difficult to understand. Also, the way that the course is designed allows you to stay engaged with the material as long as you are going through it consistently. As you make your way through the course, you will notice that the lessons and questions you are seeing are tailored to the areas that you tend to struggle with more. The tutors and support team are also extremely helpful and respond to questions promptly, they definitely want to see you do well and they strive to make themselves as available as possible.
I found that some of the verbal material was substantially harder than what I consider more common in the official GMAT Prep questions, especially the reading comprehension. But you can feel confident that if you are able to get through the Economist material in this section, you will probably do very well on the actual exam. Also, it is difficult to look back at all the material that you have already covered, although you can find brief summaries of each lesson on the home page.
All in all, I highly recommend the course to people who are disciplined with their study time and are able to devote a sufficient time to get through the majority of the course.

In addition I also had two 1 hour sessions with the Economist verbal tutor Kasia. Initially I was skeptical of how large a difference a simple 1 hour session could make to my overall score, however my Skype session with Kasia quickly changed my views. During the session she identified several areas I was weak at such as 'Bold' questions in critical reasoning and the conditional rules in sentence correction. She sent me nearly 100 questions with simple explanations specific to my weaknesses to guide my self-study and two highly relevant grammar textbooks along with guidance on which chapters to read. I did all of the questions, reviewed my answers and read the textbooks in detail.
In the exam I scored 44 in the verbal section, which put me in the 98th percentile and lead to an overall score of 740 (97th percentile). I also scored 6/6 in the Analytic Writing Assessment (AWA) and 8/8 in the Integrated Reasoning (IR) section. Consequently I received multiple offers for schools of my choice including one from a business school ranked in the top 5 in the world by the Financial Times and another that offered me a merit scholarship, that discounted my course fees by 50%, saving me thousands of dollars. I highly recommend the Economist's GMAT Course!

Things I liked:

- uses an enjoyable, interactive and adaptive curriculum
- the online tutors always respond to your question within two days
- very much practice based...practice practice practice
- the answer to each practice question is explained thoroughly
- the simulation tests are very comparable to the real GMAT
- I found the explanation of mathematical and verbal concepts very easy to follow
- the estimated score prediction is accurate
- the mobile app is great for studying when you are away from your computer
Things I disliked
- the course is very expensive, but you get what you pay for
- I could not finish 100% of the course in time. If you are working full time you will need 3 full months, putting in about 2- 3 hours each evening and at least 8 hours during each weekend. I had a few weeks where I wasn't able to work. Overall I completed about 67% of the course in 3.5 months (86% of the quant (62 hours of work) and around 51% verbal (14 hours), plus 6 simulation exams). I also did some practice exams with the official software.
Overall the prep was very thorough and I fully recommend spending the money.
The Economist offers a targeted GMAT study course
- Teacher:
- Recommended for —Verbal: Yes Math: Yes

The advantages of this course are:
1) The verbal, quant, AWA course materials resemble those on the actual exam.
2) In my case, the simulation test scores closely reflected the scores that I was getting on the official GMAC software (I purchased an exam pack).
3) There are more than enough practice questions for the student to work on.
4) Most of all, it walks you through the studying process so you know which skills to target. This was a real advantage for me because I was able to focus on the essentials and avoided taking in extra information.
In my opinion, this course can improve in several areas:
1) The practice questions are great, but sometimes the same types of questions show up more often than optimal, even if I was able to answer them with high accuracy.
2) It seems that the the system recommends practice questions based at least partly on the results of the simulation tests that the user took. On one of the practice exams my internet disconnected, leaving me with a significantly lower score than what I normally received. This then impacted the types of questions I got.
Overall, I made the right decision choosing this GMAT course. I had tried both the Kaplan and Manhattan materials before stumbling across the GMAT tutor and can say that this course put me into the 700's. However, do expect to put in over 100 hours overall because there is a lot of material.

Do not recommend - Quant is good, verbal is terrible
- Teacher:
- Recommended for —Verbal: No Math: Yes

Some other cons - you are unable to pick topics that you might want to practice - the software decides what kind of problems and the topics you get. I also personally found it impossible to finish the course in 3 months as once you complete 80% of the course, the program goes into maintenance mode where a high a number of problems are repeated and the progress is slow. They charge you 200$ to extend the program for a month.
Overall I don't recommend going with the Economist as although their quant section is pretty good, you can't buy quant and verbal separately (which some companies offer) and the whole package just isn't worth it.

This time around I wanted to have a tutor/program to work through. I chose the Economist because it had a money back guarantee if I didn't hit above a certain amount of improvement if I did the full course. I spent over 130 hours studying between this course, tutoring sessions, practice tests, videos, and my own study material (official GMAT review book and some math books). The course took me through everything and kept me from solely focusing on quant where I struggled last time. I was able to improve both my quant and verbal sub-sections. I also improved my IR score (not as important to me since my school doesn't look at it). However, I didn't find the AWA portion helpful. It was very structured in how to build your essay, but I thought it was very one dimensional.
My main tutor was Jake Wengroff. He was an excellent tutor. He knew how to walk through practice problems at my speed and how to explain concepts. He also did a great review of the problems from my practice test when I asked for assistance reviewing it.
So while the course was very helpful, I do want to warn: do not buy it for the guarantee!!! Getting the guarantee is next to impossible. You have to complete 90% of the course and doing so would take 100 hours after finishing the first 75-80% of the course (this is based on what I was told by a tutor other than Jake). Basically it is a huge undertaking and will most likely lead to getting burnt out on studying which means it isn't worth it. With that being said, I got 50 points of improvement and moved 10 percentile up. Not quite the guaranteed 70 points for the course I bought, but in my opinion it was worth the money!

Initially I was a bit discouraged about the high cost, but I gave the free week trial a test run and loved the software from minute one. I found the program forced you to sit down and study at an intensity level that was equivalent to that of test day. Personally this would not have been possible for me if I was studying independently. With the program I studied about 85 hours total, but they were hardcore focused hours.
I only completed one live tutoring session which was very professional and easily accessible. I did not feel I needed further one on one sessions because the program explained everything very logically.
I did use three of the essay reviews and it was evident that the marker put some thought into the essay and provided insightful comments.
Lastly the program gives you an "estimated score" as you progress through the course. This was very rewarding to see your estimated score rise at the end of a long study session - further motivation.
I initially wrote a 540 without studying. At test day about two months later I wrote a 710! If I had put in the same amount of time without the Economist prep tool I would estimate my score would have been around a 670.
These extra points landed me a huge scholarship at my first choice school - easily paying off my initial sticker shock.

2) You can let the adaptive engine take you through the course working more intensely on your weakest areas or you can chart your own course by selecting which topics you want to cover as you go. This was very important to me given my time constraints.
3) No need to take notes, you can always revisit key highlights of a lesson in your control panel.
4) The ask a tutor feature is responsive and useful. You?ll get a response within 6-12 hours.
5) The live one-on-one sessions with tutors were great to build my confidence tackling data sufficiency questions. The tutors will pull up questions on topics you select in advance and work on the questions with you.
6) AWA grading. My first essay sucked. The person who graded it basically dissected the thing with five or six comments and completely changed my approach. Went from a 3 to a 6 in three attempts.
7) Had a head start comparing with other internationals when it came to Verbal due to my English skills. But the sentence correction material? it was brilliant. After a month with the Economist prep I just could not get a sentence correction question wrong. Very simple rules make you improve dramatically.
8) I found the mock exam to be a lot more realistic compared to what I tried on other companies, particularly MPrep. Still, the best mocks are those you get from GMAT prep.
Things not so great about it:
1) The score predictor does not work very well, I wouldn?t pay attention to it.
2) Pretty weak on IR preparation. Seems to me that the Economist subscribes to the ?IR doesn?t matter? view. I had to complement my preparation with GMAT prep.
3) I found the Reading Comp. questions a little more ambiguous than the actual GMAT
4) While the engine works well, it does repeat a few questions you?ve answered before every once in a while.
Trust me, you will not be disappointed. Went from a 630 to 730 in the last Economist mock and scored a 760 in the real thing.

A friend who graduated from Harvard Business School strongly recommended I try the Economist GMAT Tutor, and I started the 7 day free trial. I LOVED it?I honestly enjoyed studying! Not only did studying become much easier, I scored a 740 on the real GMAT after a little less than 4 months of studying with the Economist.
Here?s why I highly recommend the Economist to anyone and everyone thinking about taking the GMAT:
(1) I can't tell you how fun studying for the GMAT became! It's like a gamified study tool that's customized to you. There are graphs that show your progress in the course, time spent by Quant/Verbal, and a score forecast graph that is so fun to watch go up and up as you progress through the course.
(2) Speaking of customized: the Economist is a smart, adaptive tutor that adjusts to what you need to spend more or less time on. The GMAT itself is adaptive, and I love that the Economist is, too. The Economist either quickly moves through the content if you keep answering things right or slows you down and gives you more practice if you're struggling. Rather than having to skim through stuff in a book that you think you Might have mastered, or waste time and sit through stuff in a class that you don't need to spend time on?or worse, have to rush through harder concepts for you because you have to follow the class' pace?the Economist helps you focus on what you need to focus on.
(3) You can study on your own time, whenever and wherever. It isn't a scheduled class you have to attend always at a certain time, or take time to travel to. You also don?t need to lug a heavy book around with you. I downloaded the mobile app and studied for 5-minute increments on my phone when I needed a break at work, and for 25-minute increments on my lunch break. You can also use the app offline (on an airplane, for example).
(4) The ?Ask-a-Tutor? feature was seriously awesome. Any time I had a question on a specific practice problem or concept in the course, I would just hit a button and submit my question, and within a day or so a tutor would reply via email with a detailed explanation to answer my question. It was fantastic. Also, the Tutoring Sessions were very helpful and I really enjoyed getting customized help and walk throughs with the Tutors over Skype! (P.S. Jake Wengroff is the bomb.com).
(5) This is maybe a small point, but the AWA Essay tutoring in the Economist is the best. They give you a very easy format to follow/memorize, and allow you to submit practice essays that they return, graded and with comments. I followed their format exactly and got a 6.0 on the AWA portion.
For the cost (around $650), I think the Economist is a great value. Way better than either books or a class. Even if you don?t end up going with the Economist, I highly recommend taking advantage of the 7-day trial!

Loved how the model adapted to pinpoint weaknesses and throw you more questions in those areas. I didn't have a lot of extra time to study for the GMAT so I appreciated the fact that every minute was used well and no time was wasted. The program also forces you to stay active in reading and solving problems whereas other online programs include watching videos which allows you to become passive in your studying. I would much rather spend my time trying out problems and going through the wrong ways to solve a it than watch a video of a tutor showing me how to solve.
Also felt the questions in the practice tests were very similar to those of the real GMAT so when test day came I was confident going through the exam.
But ultimately the results speak for themselves, I went from 670 to 780 using the Economist GMAT Tutor program. For what it's worth, my strategy was to study for about an hour a day for about 3 months. 5 weeks out I started taking a practice test each Friday, reviewed it Saturday and tried to schedule a tutor session on the Sunday/Monday afterwards. I also had the same tutor for every online session (Jake Wengroff) which was very helpful as we were able to build a good rapport.

In terms of verbal, they really hit the nail on the head. It's good to look at the OG as well before the exam but overall, I couldn't ask for much more.
In regards to quant, I heard a few pepole grumble that it was good to give you a good theoretical overview but lacked the level of difficulty really high quant scorers look for. It's difficult for me to judge in this respect since I was much stronger at Verbal but definitely can't argue with my overall score of 730!
I would reccommend this course if you are studying at home and have to balance this with work etc.

Positives
? Adaptive learning ? Most GMAT programmes follow the ?one-size fits all? approach. GMAT test takers have different backgrounds and skill sets, which means that there is really no ?average student? which makes it important for a learning programme to meet the specific needs of the student. After giving the initial diagnostic tests, I did not give another test till I finished approximately 50% of the programme. Throughout this time I felt like I was making no progress because my accuracy on the practice questions with the GMAT tutor remained the same. However, the software was probably working on my weaknesses and giving me tougher questions on my stronger areas, which is what eventually helped me improve my score.
? Easy to fit into a busy schedule ? This programme is really good for people who need to balance work and other commitments with GMAT studies. You can have sessions from 5 mins up to 1 hour and can easily fit in short sessions on your way to work or during breaks so you are constantly making some progress.
Negatives
? Can not go back to past questions or explanations ? Your ?Dashboard? on the GMAT tutor has summaries of all the topics you have covered but it?s not possible to go to the detailed explanations of previous topics/practice questions.
? I had scheduled two tutoring sessions the day before my final GMAT to solve a few last minute doubts, but BOTH the tutors did not show up on skype for the sessions. They later apologised and said that this was a rare occurrence, but it was incredibly frustrating and highly unprofessional of them because not only did I waste time on skype waiting for the tutors, I had to spend a few hours on the internet trying to find the answers to my questions when all I wanted to do was relax one day before my GMAT.

I had less than 2 months to study for the GMAT, which is quite challenging when you are working full time. But the option of choosing the length of a session, makes it very useful to manage time. Furthermore, there is a window that shows the progress and an approximate gmat score, which in my case was very accurate.
I got 690 and the estimator had estimated my score between 680 and 710.
The tutors (Kesia and Jake) that gave me the private sessions were phenomenal, knowledgeable and very helpful. I recommend doing a strategy session. The advice in time management they gave was crucial.
All aspects of the quantitative and verbal section got me well prepared for the GMAT. I just thought the sentence correction part was a little weak though. I complemented it by purchasing a pack from the official gmat prep.
I got 5.5 on my essay, I have to give 100% credit to the Economist for that. They were great and very helpful.
The integrated reason part is ridiculous though.
Overall I'm very satisfied, and I wholeheartedly recommend The Economist GMAT Tutor.

The Economist GMAT Prep allowed me to do a simulation test before I registered in order to gauge my level before starting the course. The course is clearly outlined and definitely helps to develop your higher order thinking skills and your approach to GMAT type problems. The fact that the course also adapts automatically to focus on your weaker areas is great.
After only 4 weeks of preparation and not even having completed the whole course my score went from 640 to the official score of 740.
Thank you!

Its a unique system were you are forced to improve your weakness while you don't waste valuable time on your strongest sections. Its amazing how good this works.
The course also show you updated statistics of your improvement (200-800 score scale) and your productivity (hours spend learning and course progress). This statistics are very interesting, although i think they could complement them with more, such as the accuracy rate by time of problem.
I also suggest Gmat Tutor to complement its offer with a The Economist free subscription - Its make all the sense as everyone knows the Economist as the best source to improve the reading skills of non-native speakers. Usually the first 3 months of subscription is cheap (12? in UK and 30 ? on Europe) - this values are a little portion of the costs of the course, so doesn't make sense why Gmat Tutor doesnt include this on the course.
I really advise everyone to try the Gmat Tutor for the first free 7 days - you will enjoy it! In 3 weeks i already improve 100 points avoiding careless mistakes.

I took the Economist GMAT Tutor course and scored a 720 on my GMAT. Though this was a bit lower than what I was expecting based on GMAT Prep tests but I think the score is good enough to select the check-mark for almost all the schools. [There are lot of discussions that Indian students need to get a really high score but numerous people have told me that's not true - GMAT is really just one, and often not the most important, component in the application].
GMAT Score - 720 - IR8, Q50, V37 (screwed up a little on the verbal :( )
Prepping for the GMAT was kind of an impromptu decision to which I didn't give much thought but now that I have I think it was a good decision.
I read some posts on the forums and came to know about various GMAT courses and I decided to take a trial for GMAT tutor. I really liked the format, it was interactive and more importantly structured -- I thought the important thing would be structured in the study to maintain discipline.
The course started off with easy Math fundamentals, which are essential by the way, before moving to Verbal topics which were not very natural for me. The concepts presented were very structured and really focussed on getting the basics clear before moving on to harder topics or questions.
The thing I really liked about the course was the ease of studying -- I didn't have to worry about whether I was doing enough questions on a topic before moving to another topic. The course gave ample number of questions after teaching each topic with answer explanations. The answer explanations are the best - they really tell you how to approach the problem and always stuck to the "method". Developing and following the method, in my opinion, is very important when you begin so that you avoid careless mistakes. Trust me, avoid careless mistakes on the GMAT and getting a good score is not hard.
For Math - Covers all the essentials, questions are good, some data sufficiency are really good. I made sure I always read answer explanations for EVERY question I did.
For Verbal - Reading Comprehension is the best - the closest thing to the real GMAT. Some very tricky questions. I used to get a lot of RC wrong and then I really started to read options and each options' answer explanations very very carefully. The main thing in RC is really reading the options very closely - overtime this becomes fast. I practised a lot of RC from GMAT tutor which eventually enabled me to do ALL RC questions correctly in four GMAT Prep Tests. At first, I thought the format of RC on GMAT tutor sucked because they give one question a passage at one time which is unlike the real test, but the point I realised later is that mastering one type of question at a time really helped me.
Critical Reasoning was okay. There are certainly differences between the real thing and GMAT tutor's CR - GMAT Tutor's CR, I thought, had more straightforward answer options than the real thing. It's not bad per-se, there are definitely good questions, but the style was somewhat different from the real thing. You should augment this part with the official guide and verbal review.
Sentence Correction - The rules GMAT tutor teaches are helpful. These helped me solve SC questions quickly - you need to be quick in SC to save time for CR and RC. Ample of questions. But I think this is the weakest section in GMAT Tutor - the official questions and the ones you will see on the test will be noticeably different. SC questions on GMAT Tutor really focussed on 1-2 errors at most and the answer options revolved around those two errors but this will not be the case on the GMAT - the answer options will be very different from each other. I do think this section needs to be improved a lot as the style of the questions is not representative.
For AWA, GMAT Tutor gives a template which works. It discusses some useful techniques but the main thing here is practice. I submitted the 6 AWA essays to get rated - they score bit harshly but the feedback is awesome. I even took a tutor session on AWA and went through all of my essays with the tutor.
IR section is present but nothing much - plus I was good at IR so it didn't matter. Also I think getting an 8 in IR doesn't need much practice - just patiently work through questions in the test, know which 2 questions to skip (I generally skipped table questions which dealt with percentages).
SIM tests are really good and they give a accurate projection. I scored from 710 - 730 on the 5 tests, quite close to the real thing. The tests don't have essays and IR section. I spent a lot of time re-doing tests and reading answer explanations.
Pros -
- Very structured course, good for people who are not sure whether they have the discipline for self-study but don't want to attend a classroom for preparation.
- Math is very structured and explains things very clearly. I was already good with Math so no complains. Questions are good and very similar to the real thing.
- Verbal is overall good. Lots of questions.
- SIM tests score are similar to the real thing.
- The usefulness of the tutor sessions depends on you -- take specific questions and the tutors are helpful.
- Lots of realistic questions - specially after you finish the theory part. I finished 96% of the course and the last 70 - 80 hours were just practice questions which really helped.
- Ask-a-Tutor feature is good - be sure to be very clear on what you are asking and you will get good answers.
Things to improve -
- Sentence Correction. I cannot stress this enough. Though the concepts are helpful, the questions are not. GMAT questions are noticeably very different.
- Needs to include AWA and IR on the SIM tests. It's very important to build that stamina . Though the scores are not that important but building that stamina is very very important.
- More tests. For the cost, I think 5 tests are a bit less.
I am happy to have taken this course and I would recommend it (yes, also to indian students though the course is bit on the expensive side).

First, it did not contain long videos taking huge amounts of time to watch - all explanations are pure text and it was all I need. Since I can read rather fast, this form of explanation was preferable to me.
Then, it was course structure - it offers different topics and mixes Quant and Verbal ones you are currently working on with occasional flashback reviews of those already completed.
Another advantage is that I didn't need anything else to study - just my laptop, a notepad and a pen. No extra books, no other web pages - just me and Gmat Tutor. I understood that it is an advantage when was looking at other preparation tools and courses.
Finally, I really liked the material given and the quality of explanations. As a mathematician, I do not always agree with the methods offered, yet they are doubtlessly effective.
On my free Sample Test included I got Q50 and V31 meaning that I should concentrate on Verbal. Yet, reviewing sample test results in Quant showed me lots of stupid or careless mistakes I made, as well as lack of experience of solving certain specific types of problems. So while I plan to improve my Verbal score, I can certainly do much better in Quant - and this course is helping me with it.
So, summarizing my review, I see the following pros:
- efficient use of learning time
- really easy to use
- good quality of explanations
And the following cons:
- Math is sometimes simplified
- iPad app is not convenient due to small button size
Finally, the price. What I paid is really too much, and since I live in a rather poor country with high USD to local currency exchange rate, the course has cost me quite a lot. Yet if if will help me get the score I want and ultimately get into BS I want, I\'ll be fine with the price paid.

What is good about the Economist course:
+ it's very flexible as you can time the sessions individually and take 5 to 60 minutes at once
+ the simulation tests gave a pretty good impression of my progress. The latest one, two days before the actual test, predicted a 680 score, which is just 10 away from my real score
+ despite all the annoying things about the course (see below), I learned alot. I like the way the content is presented and overall, the tips are pretty useful. The GMAT is all about knowing what the GMAC wants to see, this program will tell you
What I did not like about the program:
- the shortest plan for the program is 3 months. I liked the trial version, so I went for the GMAT Tutor even though I just had 3 weeks to learn and couldn't finish the course. Personally, I think it is a little cheeky to make people pay for such a long time in any case
- you cannot choose a particular lesson yourself. I found this pretty annoying in the end when I ran out of time and wanted to pick specific topics that weren't included in the course yet and where I knew I needed improvement. Consequently, I was forced to look up (google) topics elsewhere online. If you don't have the time to take the entire course, that is a real contra.
- the mobile phone app of the program is a nice idea but needs improvement. When my internet wasn't very stable (in the train etc.), the app kept switching from offline to online mode and then mixed up verbal and quant parts all the time. I preferred to learn the verbal part with the app because you don't need to take notes here, but with the mixing up that was pretty useless.
- There are only 3 simulation tests. Paying 500? for a course, I think it is just ridiculous to limit the number of tests to three. Why would you do this?
- The email communication, including the ask-a-tutor feature, did not work well. I did not get an answer to all of my questions within 24 hours, sometimes it was near 48 hours for them to respond. To give another example: The evening before my GMAT test, after I had already completed the 3 sim tests and 60% of the course, I received the email that I had now finished more than 30% and that I could have a go for the sim tests. The program claims it is so personalized, in this case it failed.
Overall: I think it is a good choice if you have the time to finish the entire course. Still, I think it needs improvement and lastly, looking at the price, I am not really satisfied. For me, that was a real investment and if I spend so much money, I expect a perfect product. The course did not always meet my expectations.

I studied around a total of 100hs for verbal and 105 for math during 3.5 months with the Economist and reached 90% of the course.
I got an impresive improvement in the Verbal Section. The Economist teaches you how to do a systematic approach to this section that reduces your mistakes and increases your awareness to eliminate wrong answer choices. However, I found that SC and RC were much better than CR in the course.
For the Math section I didn't improve as much as I was expecting on my score. But it has an interesting approach that teaches you how to think problems faster with a strategy to "ball-park" or guess if necessary.
For AWA the course gives you usefull templates to use and the tutors helps you with their corrections. And last, for IR you don't have so much material to do. But I don't think IR is as important for the GMAT score right now as the other sections.
The practice tests are realistic and helps you improve very much, but they don't have AWA and IR section. I recommend to use other sources of AWA and IR before taking this tests so you can more precisely resemble the test conditions.
Good luck.

I really like how the application works to anticipate what you need and suggests lessons for you. The questions and content does get more difficult the better you do, just like the actual exam. It does more then just quiz but actually teach strategy to the questions and how to go about the test. But it also teaches you content so you know what is actually going on. So you understand the verbal questions or the math pieces.
The GMAT Economist Tutor also provides an online version but also an iPad version so I can pretty much take it wherever. The application also allows for practice exams, tutor advice, and even an essay that can be scored. So it really covers a lot of the bases. But it still takes a lot of time and effort that you have to put in. It is an expensive test prep program, but worth it.

I've not only learnt a lot of techniques to answer questions faster, also, the GMAT Tutor really teaches you to put them in practice and sort of helps embed in your head when to use such techniques. I've already improved my score (from mock tests) over 50+ points.
The only drawback is that I only payed for 3 months, and am not sure if I will be able to finish the course on time without having to pay an additional 700 dollars.

First a little introduction about my self: I did a bachelor at the rotterdam school of management IBA. I always have been ok with math, however I'm not an native speaker (I come from france).
I studied the gmat with the economist for one month, about two hours during week day and 6 hours during weekends (I was also working).
I took the gmat and I got 640. I was a bit surprised and disappointed because I had for my three online test with the economist 620 then 670 and finally 690. I was electing more than 710.
The problem is that I scored low one verbal. Prehaps because I was over confident about that part as with the economist my scored improved a lot (from 28 to 38). I think I was used to the way the economist asked the questions, or maybe I was to not enough concentrated on the real gmat (stress ect)
However I would strongly recommend the economist: It is intuitive, it give a lot of tips. You should take more than one month to prepare the gmat, if you want to score above 700. I think in three months if you only do that, 6h a day it should be more than enough!
I did not study more than 4 hours one the IR and got 7: I think it the same as what you learn in quant!
I do not have my awa yet.

After the results of my first GMAT attempt, I decided that I needed help studying and determined to find a course that matched my needs. I was deployed at the time, so I needed a course that had a flexible schedule, and so I avoided courses that had set webinar times, and in person attendance was out of the question. I did the week-long free trial with Economist GMAT and I liked the way the course presented information. I also took a practice test at the end of the period and scored a 590, or about where I had scored a month previously on my real GMAT, giving me confidence in the practice test's accuracy.
This program is self-paced, meaning that it is entirely up to the student to schedule study times, and how long to take on each question. However, the program will determine what types of question the student most needs to practice, meaning that as long as the student can "show up" mentally prepared to study, he can focus on studying rather than waste time deciding what to study.
The Economist GMAT also provides several practice tests, which were incredibly accurate, but only cover Quant and Verbal (a week before my practice test I scored 40V/49Q on a practice test, the same score that I earned the next week!). There are separate graded essays, which I chose to do immediately prior to the tests to best simulate test day.
The other useful feature of the program is the ability to schedule Skype tutor sessions. The biggest drawback of these sessions is that they really need to be scheduled at least several days out, probably a week or more, and the student must choose the subject for the session when it is scheduled. However, the tutors are definitely experts, and can provide detailed insight into problems as well as strategy.
In a final word to students trying to choose a program - choose one that motivates you to do the work, because in the end it is you and not a program taking the test and earning a score. Some people respond better to certain approaches, but this program worked for me and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a self-paced course.

I had bought the ultimate prep plan with the economist GMAT tutor which guaranteed a 70 point improvement on march -2014.Before taking up the course I was hovering around mid 600 range with the official GMAT prep test and I felt I needed a course to help me breach the 700 mark.
I worked with the software for around 160 hours and at the end of the day my official GMAT score was at the same place where I had started. After dedicating almost 4 months on the program I was greatly disgruntled that not one of the various promises made by the company were held true and I had run around circles thanks to the program.
I list out the various cons of the program in my opinion:
1.Simulation tests & Scoring Estimate:-
The simulation tests(6 nos) are a very poor indicator/simulator of your actual test scores/conditions. In some of the tests that I took the quant section literally had more than 20-25 data sufficiency questions. No matter how poor a student may be in that particular question type, it is no reason for a simulation exam to keep throwing the same type of question.
There was no IR or AWA section which means you will not get a actual feel of the exam and the stamina needed if only the verbal and quant section provided in the tests are taken.(I used to gather AWA questions from MBA website and IR question from the GMAT Prep software before taking the tests)
The scoring estimate provided was very illogical where in certain tests I had 8-9 questions wrong intermittently were scored equally to those where I had scored 15-16 questions wrong continuously. And when questioned on the logic of these estimate the people in charge send a standard text copied from their website. There were also cases where the question types were wrongly labeled. I had a data sufficiency/problem solving question label in Verbal section.
2.No timing or difficulty level available.
Although there are a number of practice questions available, a very few of them are timed and there is no indication of difficulty level(the no of people who got it right/wrong or the range to which the question belongs to).Since the program is adaptive, you cannot go back to these questions later on as there is no simple way to archive the questions.
If you want to analyze your performance and timing there are no tools with the software that help you to analyze your strengths and weakness.
3.No new or innovative strategies:
Once the program identifies your weak areas it keeps throwing questions on the same area with the repeat of the basics . It does not provide any new or innovative strategies or tactics to overcome your weakness and the foundation lessons can be found in any high school textbook. Especially for quant which was my weak area prior to taking up the course remained so till the test day.
4.Bogus money back guarantee:
The money back guarantee offered may seem attractive to many at first. What I felt was the money back guarantee is just a gimmick to get people enrolled to test the bugs in the program and streamline it for the future. Also there are many wordings in the fine print which people may miss such as a compulsory session with an instructor on strategy for the exam that has to be taken 7-14 days before the tests. But the Economist tutor people have written it in such a manner that users may understand that all sessions have to be taken at least 7-14 days before the tests. So if you take the strategy session 15 days before the actual test you lose your qualification for money back.
A 45 minute session a week before your exam with an instructor can work wonders and gain you a 70 point increment than the 160 hours you spent with the program is what is being implied by such a guarantee.
5.Proof Reading:
The questions though numerous in quantity were poor qualitatively with a number of typo errors. This coming from a tutor program owned by one of the supposedly best business magazine in the united states made me wonder about the quality of the program itself and the credibility of the question makers.
6.NO IR section:
The program for its cost could have provided a comprehensive IR section with the question types tested so far in the GMAT. But the theory covered is very meager and literally of no use when you take up the original test.
There were a few pros too in the program
1.The verbal section was comprehensive and covered most of the questions asked in the GMAT till date. I found the Sentence correction especially good.
2.Highy flexible with regards to timing as it is a online program where you can schedule a session based on your availability. However, at least two to four half an hour sessions a day with the program will be helpful than a number of 10 minutes sessions.
3.The AWA grading done by experts is especially useful in identifying weakness in your reasoning and style and the pointers provided are genuinely helpful.
All in all I would not recommend the program to re-takers as I believe you already have got the basics right and need to work on either your test taking tactics or on advanced topics. Both of the mentioned items are not covered by the program.
Score Guarantee is not dependable. Quant good, Verbal Easy(Not so close to GMAT).

However the biggest problem i found with the course was - you cannot revise old topics in a full screen window. They have a 3 inch wide window in the software where you will have to read vertically extended passages of notes.
Secondly they do guarantee a full refund of your fees. But they dismissed me over a technicality. So brace yourselves when you are paying for it. Consider the money spent. I wish I didn't have to apply for the refund in the first place. But now I have less cash and a low score!
I bought the software twice actually because they only give you a 3 month window to complete the GMAT. I had to renew my subscription.
I only found their one-to-one skype sessions helpful as some of the teachers were pretty good! But otherwise I would advise against it because there are much better courses available online who don't do false marketing for people with tight budgets.
I have found one that is alot cheaper than GMAT TUTOR and my recommendation for people Re-appearing for the GMAT - GROCKIT.
Hope this was helpful to a few people. All the best!

I think the "computer adaptive" aspect of the program is the most impressive. The program quickly identifies my strengths and weakness and tailors a study program that suits my needs. The online tutors also have access to data and progress, so they know exactly what I need to practice to improve my score. Their tutors are also extremely helpful and very timely in their responses to my "Ask a Tutor" emails.
Overall, the Economist Tutor is an excellent program that is great for people who do not have the time to enroll in an online or classroom based course, but still want a comprehensive, tailored studying experience.

A fantastic course for a GMAT re-taker

I started the Economist prep trial software in January out of curiosity, at that point, not entirely intent on re-taking the test at any given time. However, I was drawn into the platform of the program, which combines adaptive teaching (to what extent, I?m not sure) with progress tracking and score prediction. The fact that the program offered a score increase guarantee of 50 points (with conditions, of course) in a certain period of time (in this case, 3 months) felt like the right kind of commitment I needed ? finite time-wise with a very specific goal. After the one-week trial period, in which I appeared to have completed around 10% of the program, I decided to go all the way.
I purchased the program in February and got started with a practice exam (my program included 3 of them). I scored 710 on that exam, meaning, I could base my score improvement on that first score (assuming I met the other conditions, one of which is to complete 90% of the course) ? 760 guaranteed? Awesome.
Over the next two months, I spent 5-7 hours per week going through the lessons and practice problems. At times it was annoying to have to click through topics I already knew, but the interspersion of practice problems with new topics is a great feature of the program and constantly keeps you practicing and refreshing your knowledge of previously taught topics.
I felt like the verbal section was particularly strong in the program. It teaches really solid rules for sentence correction (I think this made the biggest difference for me) and guidelines for reading comprehension that helped me save a lot of time. When feeding me verbal practice questions, it seemed to give me mostly SC problems, which I suppose mimics the composition of the real test, but it would have been nice, after I had answered 20 consecutive SC questions correctly (no exaggeration) that it would have given me some critical reasoning or reading comprehension questions. Anyhow, I breezed my way through the bulk of the verbal section in the first two months, spending 1/2 to 2/3 of the time that I spent on quant. I noticed my verbal score on the practice tests (I did official and Manhattan practice tests on the side) making marked improvements, from 38-40 to 42-44. At the end of two months, I had finished all of the lessons in the verbal section (between 70-75% completion, as the program tracks it), leaving only practice problems.
Throughout the program, I had mixed feelings about the way quant is taught. As a detail-oriented person, I was a little annoyed that they were teaching ballparking as a fundamental skill. However, this approach is actually very helpful in brushing off seemingly insurmountable problems without over-dedicating. I learned some new approaches to solving quant problems (both problem solving and data sufficiency) that I think were especially helpful. There were not any remarkable ways of re-learning the fundamental math behind the problems, but the repetitive drilling of practice questions helped a lot to get formulas memorized. While this program may not be as strong as others in teaching test-takers to correctly answer the super-difficult quant questions, I thought it did a good job overall in preparing me for the quant section as a whole, considering all the questions, strategy and timing. At the end of the first two months, I had only finished around half of the quant part of the program, despite having spent significantly more time on it.
Throughout the first two months, I used 3 of the 4 tutoring sessions included in the program. The session basically consists of a 45-minute Skype conversation with a tutor to review an area of your choice. I chose the areas that had been weak in practice tests. While we were not able to cover many questions in that time, as compared with the GMAT practice problems, I found it helpful to discuss in detail the elements of the problems and to learn new strategies for dealing with questions. I don?t consider the tutoring sessions to be a crucial part of the program, but it?s definitely a nice bonus to have.
At the start of my third and final month of the program, I took some time to assess what I needed to do to get where I wanted to go. I had a goal of 760 (within the program, anyway) and needed to complete approximately 40% of the quant and 15% of the verbal in order to meet the 90% threshold for The Economist?s score guarantee. I did notice that progress beyond a certain point (somewhere in the 60-70% range) becomes significantly more difficult to achieve. At some points, I would work diligently for an hour, only to get less than one percent progress. I think this has to do with concept mastery, which makes sense. If I hadn?t mastered the concepts, I should only be able to progress so far. Anyway, it is important to note that progress within this program is not linearly correlated with time spent. I spent 35-40 hours on practice sessions (not including practice tests, of which I took about 8 during the same time period) in the third month, and did not come close to the 90% milestone. However, my practice test results were promising ? I had scored in the 740-750 range on the last two Economist tests and a 760 on one official (practice) test. I figured I?d go ahead with my early-May GMAT (my prep program ended in April) and see how it goes, with no score guarantee.
I submitted one practice AWA for review and comment (I still don?t think I?ve received any feedback on it, three weeks later). The program supposedly includes 3 AWA reviews, but I didn?t make use of it to any significant degree. I wrote a few AWAs as part of the practice tests I did leading up to the real test, so felt sufficiently prepared.
I did not come across any integrated reasoning sections as part of the GMAT practice prep. I think there is a short section at the end of the quant lessons (which I did not reach). Anyhow, I didn?t worry too much about it, as I had aced IR on my first GMAT.
So, I went in to take my test on May 3, with a reasonable level of confidence. I had meditated the night before and went for a short run a couple hours before test time. I may not have finished the prep program, but I had a solid foundation and was in the right state of mind. I managed to breeze through the essay (and even have time to review ? not normal for me). I felt good about my performance on IR, and although I didn?t finish, I wanted to stay focused on the ?important? parts. Quant went as smoothly as it could have. For the more conventional problems, I could quickly pull out the needed weapon (their use fresh in my memory from all the drills and practice tests), strike the problem down, and proceed to the next; for the more exotic quant beasts, I was able to gauge within a reasonable amount of time whether I was worthy of the foe or should take a cheap shot and flee (and live to see another day). I think this this ability to assess quant problems before getting knee-deep in them was what I gained most from the program. For the verbal section, it was more like the last few miles of a marathon than a series of battles. In my first GMAT, I faced mental exhaustion in the verbal section, unable to focus after spending so much energy previously. This time, not so ? I managed to pace myself through to the end, finishing in the last 10 seconds. With the solid verbal practice that I gained from The Economist?s program, the challenge was just to stay calm and focused.
Half dreading and half elated about what my result could be, I took the maximum amount of time during the survey questions. The result came up, and it was a 750 (49Q 44V). Phew. I?ll take it.
While I didn?t achieve the 760 that I wasn?t guaranteed by The Economist, I am in every way satisfied with my results (minus the drop in IR score, small matter) and I found it a great way to achieve real results in a set amount of time. It is also far more flexible and cost effective than receiving tutoring from a human. That isn?t to say that personal tutoring isn?t valuable, but for the cost of the program, the amount of information and practice I got is phenomenal.

It took me 2.5 months to complete 92% of the course. So there is a lot of material and a good question bank especially for math. Math questions were very alike original stuff with theory covering everything from the bottom. Adaptive system on quant was great, I think I started with less than 40 in the quant and now I hit 50 on average.
Verbal didn't felt that good for me. There is a good pack of theory, especially for SC. I didn't actually finish verbal part and didn't get my hands on harder questions but original thing felt way harder. Questions definitely hammer basics into you but it probably wasn't enough for my level.

The Web Application
I really like the web application. It is intuitive. The UI is clean. However, I would recommend they change the review section. I found it a pain to navigate.
Quant
The quant content is very robust. If you learn best by practicing a lot and by doing a lot of questions then Economist GMAT would be a very good bet. They present you with many (thousands) questions of varying difficulty. The methods they teach are for the most part very solid. My Quant skills improved a great deal because of this course.
Verbal
On my second time around I didn't use as much as the verbal section as the first time. While very thorough I found their SC methods a bit weak. This may be because the practice SC questions are unlike official GMAT questions. When I came to apply the SC methods to OG GMAT questions they just didn't click for me.
The RC and CR content is good and the practice questions I found comparable to the GMAT.
Relative to some other courses the course is quite expensive. I think it is worth the money but the rolling monthly $90 fee when you have finished the three months is excessive. This is especially the case when your customers are all likely busy people who may not be able to complete their prep in the initial three months. it feels a bit like a money grab. This is my only gripe and this comes from a returning customer.

Feedback is also given in real-time. As soon as you answer a question you see if you were right. If you got it wrong there is an explanation and a chance to learn from your mistake. No more flipping back and forth to the back of a prep book.
The progress tracker is a nice motivational tool. I find myself looking to hit certain completion benchmarks and that has kept me working hard. The score forecaster gives a 90-100 point range which seems too broad to be helpful but it's nice to see that you're score is improving.
The ask-a-tutor function hasn't been very helpful. Often the responses aren't helpful and at times seem condescending.
I would recommend the course overall. Don't bother with the more expensive versions unless you really think a few extra tests is worthwhile. I recommend you take the three tests that come with the complete version and take practice exams that you can get for free from Kaplan or GMAC. You can also buy the practice exams from Manhattan Prep.

I was not disappointed. The course was extremely thorough, giving me complete confidence that every matter would be covered and that recent changes and added sections in the exam would be addressed.
The course is built to allow you to meet an objective - a high GMAT score. Everything in it is thoroughly researched and presented to teach you how the exam might trick you, common mistakes and common fool-proof answer checks. My exam methodology I took during my School days was clearly not the right one to take into this test, and the Economist Tutor was instrumental in changing it into a more effective GMAT-focussed method.
I also submitted essays for the AWA section for marking on three occasions and my score went up each time as I practiced and responded to feedback. Again, had I approached this section without some crucial bits of advice from the Economist GMAT tutor I would have been in a far different situation.
Unfortunately I did not leave myself enough time to complete the whole course, and I think that perhaps my score reflects this. As a means to an ends though, it has got me exactly where I want to be, to my Business School of 1st preference and I really don't think I would be here without it!

The program largely consist of answering example questions using a slider entry that allows you to choose your level of confidence with the answer while choosing the answer that you believe to be correct. This same interface is used for presenting new information as well.
The presentation seems to be in a set order, with skills building on each other. However, the actual practice questions provided are highly adaptive, with too many incorrect answers triggering outright reeducation on the topic. Providing consistently correct answers will result in faster progression through the course as well as more challenging questions.
Set to the defaults, the course will switch every 10-15 minutes between math and verbal practice. But you do not have the option to target particular material for review.
I found the system to be somewhat frustrating, particularly for math, which is my weak point. There are times when a more thorough review would be appreciated, particularly when answering a question wrong. While an explanation is provided, it is not always thorough.
The ability to submit questions involves a near 24 hr delay, and so is not particularly useful.
The practice test are superb, and worth the cost of the program itself. The feedback is detailed, and the essay is scored by a human.

After completing more than 75% of the course over 100+ hours of studying, I took the real test and was quite disappointed with my score to say the least. While I felt prepared and was scoring in the 600's on the OG tests, I do not hold this program solely accountable.
Some of my frustrations include the inability to select specific lessons, the "tutor" sessions, the score forecast, and the IR preparation. First, as many people have said before, it is not possible to select a certain problem area you are struggling with for review. There isn't even a search feature to go through the small summary tidbits the program does have. Searching for topics is annoying. I gave up and just came to the forums for supplemental info. Another program feature that I found useless was the score forecaster. After completing 75% of the program and completing all 3 simulation tests, my score forecast had a range of 90 points. 90 points on the GMAT is huge and provides no value. Third, the program never introduced me to the IR content. I feel its ridiculous after 75% of the course this was not discussed.
One of the major disappointments for me was the one-on-on tutoring sessions. 3 of my 4 sessions were USELESS. And I mean completely useless. I spent the 50 minutes watching the tutors solve problems. After asking questions the tutors responded with minutes of "ummmmmm, uhhhhh, hmmmmmm". When an answer was given and I continued to ask questions, sometimes they were answered, other times they weren't. On a specific topic I asked a few follow questions on the tutor said, "I have explained it perfectly. I don't know why you don't understand and I can't do it any other way". Thank you for being helpful and hard working!! The last straw for me was when one of the tutors answered my question by telling me to look in the online forums for the answers. This is unacceptable and a joke. I hope that I just had bad experiences.
These are just some of my negative feelings about the course. Some people have found it helpful and the ability to use the course anywhere is a plus. However, I would recommend using a different course as I am.

- Really focuses on the way that you should approach the test questions rather than what the answers should be.
- Feels like it is tailored to your personnel needs.
-Ability to choose the length of lessons based on the time you have.
-
Cons-
- I found that the IPAD app version was a little bit harder to use than the full computer version.
-You can't choose the exact topic you want to study at the time. You can choose to have options but if what you want to go over is not offered there is not way of getting to it. I understand the reasoning behind this, but it can cause difficulties for the user if their scheduled date to take the test is fast approaching and they have yet to reach certain topics they know will be on the test.
OVERALL, I think this is a great program. However, my main warning would be that it is important to make sure you have enough time to get through the full program before you take the test. I spent about 1 months studying for 2 to 3 hours per day on average and was unable to make it through all the material. Therefore when I took the test I was not satisfied with my score. However, I don't really blame the economist GMAT tutor for that. I plan to re-take after completing the course and will update my review then to reflect my final conclusions.

The Econonomist GMAT - A must have

Being able to dedicate no more than 6-7 hours/week due to my workload, it was difficult to me to keep up with my studies and I've decided to force me using a prep course.
I've looked around for a while but I've then found the killer application in the The Economist Tutor.
It's a self adaptive course, which means the type of questions and the difficulty level vary depending on your Learning curve: it's impressive how the software keep on presenting you the same types of problem until you crack it! It's like having a teacher in front of you..you can't escape!
Moreover, the good of the program is exactly when you fai in a problem: books explain the correct answer (and sometimes take the explaination as an occasion to confuse the student even more), The Economist GMAT Tutor goes straight to the point, both showing you the way to and going through the wrong answers too, guessing what drove you to choose them.
You feel naked in front of the software, exactly the same as you would be in front of a teacher and whenever you require an additional support Beyond the problem explaination, the "ask a tutor" function will let you get in touch with a teacher ready to remove any doubt with a very very detailed explaination sent by email within the next 24 hours from your request. Impressive!
All in all, I believe it's a must have for any GMAT student because it's really well done if you need a preparation from scratch. On the other side, given the architecture of the software, I wouldn't suggest it to those who are already quite advanced in GMAT and need to focus their preparation on few topics only: in these cased I think one to one lessons with a real teacher is the best method to optimize your time and Learning curve.
Overall completion of the program is estimated in 100 hours more ore less.

After three weeks of practice, I could actually solve most of the questions, both quant and verbal, yet my great problem was that I needed more time than that allotted in the GMAT. In first practice test, one of the two free GMAC's Official prep tests, I scored 600.
After some search I decided to try the free week of The Economist GMAT Tutor. I liked the idea that non only the practice tests but the whole course was adaptive.
No longer than 3 days later, I had already decided that I would subscribe it.
These are the main strengths:
- The system really learns from your performance as the course goes further, and tailors the practice questions to your level.
- Any session of theory is followed by practice questions that help you to fix what you have just learnt.
- Practice questions about older lessons often appear, leading you to review regularly all the program.
- The practice tests are reliable predictor of your future performance. I took five of them and my scores were 740, 710, 710, 710 and finally 740. My real score was 750.
- The tutors provide precious tips about critical issues such as time management and strategic approach to each section.
- The quant section of the course helps to save a great amount of time and to tackle harder questions with an efficient and successful approach.
- The verbal section is by far were I made my greatest improvement. As a non-native English speaker, I have a good command of English. Still some parts of the verbal section -sentence correction above all- were really tricky to me. The course gave me some outstanding tools that led me to gain 45 (99th percentile) in the real GMAT.
However, there are a couple of flaws:
- The practice tests do not include neither the AWA nor the IR. Therefore, they do not provide a real GMAT experience in terms of timing and mental stress. To do so, you definitely need to use the GMAC's Official prep tests.
- The IR section of the course is really, really bad.
All that said, none of these minor downside undermines in any way the value of the course.
Every single Euro is worth spending, and I STRONGLY recommend anyone who aim at high score to subscribe.
Does the course make a miracle? Really, it does not.
But it gives some terrific tools that allow to tackle almost any kind of question that you will find in the real GMAT. The more you will devote to study and practice, the more you will improve.

My experiences at the Halfway Mark

I have been thinking about taking the GMAT for a long time now, and preparing for the last 4 months albeit not very seriously. Initially, I was skeptical about joining an online prep course but I wasn't satisfied with just working with the books. I bought the Manhattan GMAT series giving me access to their online tests where I got hammered with a 670 a month into prep. I finished the Kaplan Premier GMAT book in August which certainly helped me but I wasn't satisfied with my level of preparedness Around this time I took the first official Practice test and scored a 680, far below my target.
After a lot of research through the forums, I decided on enrolling for the Economist GMAT program. My take of the various reviews was that it was best suited for someone who could give it enough time, perfect for me since I had time on my side. Also, I was impressed by the program's availability anytime, anywhere through the net.
In spite of my rigorous work schedule I have tried to devote at least an hour a day (more on weekends) to the program, the best part about the interface is how it continually adapts to your style, for instance, I had issues in a certain math topic a while back, the program recognized my weakness and still keeps on asking question on that topic, sometimes out of the blue while you're working on a different section, this has helped me clear the concept as well as helped me concentrate better in tight situations, good positive reinforcement. Also, solving questions on the computer screen is good practice for the real thing.
I have felt myself improve over this time, both in terms of skills as well as concentration. And my practice scores have steadily improved. My second Official practice score was 740 and I still have 50% of this course to go. Just to put pressure on myself, I have registered for the GMAT exam (20th March '14). I plan on finishing the course by the mid Feb, which is when I will start giving the various practice exams, just to get in the groove.
The program also has features like Ask-A-Tutor and you can schedule live consultation sessions apart from the 5 practice exams and AWA Essay Reviews. I have deliberately saved mine since I want to finish the course before using these features. I have used the Ask-A-Tutor function for a few questions and the reply from the instructors has been quick and honest.
I have no doubt that any person who gives this course the time it needs will feel the improvement in his prep as well as concentration abilities.

A nice aspect of the course is that it adapts to your abilities. So for me, that meant that I got many questions with powers, since I find those very hard. In this way you practice quite a lot on the subjects you find difficult.
The explanation of the subjects are very practical, they focus on how you can easily handle a question in a logical way. Not in a difficult mathematical way, which i do not like, but in a practical way.
Between the lessons they give all kind of tips how the interpreter the (strange) GMAT questions.
A tip; start in time with this course because it takes a lot of hours to finish it. I needed one hour for 1%.

The overview of each sections was easy to follow and I was able to take quality notes. I especially liked the fact that the online course was quite interactive, since sections ask you to respond after each reading/problem solving/etc. you stay engaged. If you can get past the poor humor, it was entertaining at some points.
Another plus was that you can put in the amount of time that you wish to send on each section if you are at a crunch for time, this was also helpful when I used The Economist?s GMAT course app on my iPhone.
I would recommend this course, but there were a few downfalls as well.
Although, I did appreciate the practice tests. They did not cover all sections timed at once. This I would have really liked to see. I wish also there were sections that I could review and print out if there was no access to internet, as I could only rely on my notes.
All in all, good for someone working full time that wants an engaging course without having to pay the absorbent prices of a GMAT course and study on their own time

Its very interactive and guides you to pick the correct answers. There are numerous innovative training process in Economist GMAT Tutor like
1. Prompts to provide the reason when selected a wrong answer.
2, Develops a sense of time on how much we take for solving a problem
3. Clearly explains every options why its wrong or why its correct.
4. Forces us to think and then answer and not just guess the answer.
5. In quant section it solves every problem providing a guide as to how to do it
6. In quant the section of POE (estimating) an answer is particularly well made.
7. The support from the tutors when asked a question is really prompt, and well answered
8. With an AI based interactive judment it slowly raises the level of questions when I started answering the correct questions. It really helped.
With all these iam happy to have enrolled in this and particularly impressed with the verbal section and would highly recommend it to any one looking to improve verbal score. The quant section is equally good but for me the verbal section stands out.

I purchased the Complete Prep and at this point I'm quite happy about my choice, though I still have a long way to go before I finish the studies.
So far I can definitely name 3 big advantages of the program that I found the most useful:
1. Time-saving tips
Before purchasing the program I took a 2-month GMAT class where we got through all question types and their solving techniques. However, solving them fast is what actually matters. In GMAT Tutor they give you different time-solving tips which teach you how to identify the question quickly and know which technique to use after looking at the question for 1-2 seconds.
Even in the Verbal section, which I'm quite good at, I found some nice tips regarding Reading Comprehension questions.
2. Detailed explanations
Since math is my weak side, detailed explanations in Quant section have helped me a lot. I used to spend a lot of time solving the problems when studying with the books. Sometimes even answer keys left me clueless about how to solve something. Here I understand things much faster.
3. Mobile format
This iOS App has saved me a lot of time when I was waiting somewhere or was traveling. This is not how you would want to study all the time, but when you need to kill the time with benefits, GMAT Tutor App is the best. And you don't need to carry heavy books around.
As for the disadvantages, I haven't faced any so far. I've read about low-quality Skype sessions (I haven't done mine yet) and low overall level of the program, but for me it has only been about good things so far.
I would definitely recommend this program for those who don't have much time for preparations and like to study online or on the go.

Thanks to the economist, I learned how to tackle reading section correctly. At least, I do not have to spend more than 3 minutes to read all a passage anymore. I usually do initial reading of a short passage in 1.5 mins and of long passage in 2 mins. You can apply initial reading method of the economist to LSAT reading too. Now although I read part of a passage, I still find out purpose and expect contend of each paragraph.
I think the CR section is very good because you will have a lot of questions to practice.
However, I find some part of sentence correct course confused since it sometimes contradicts to knowledge I have got from manhattan SC book. I am not sure which course is totally correct but in many case I find manhattan SC book explain more properly.

It keeps track of your performance and adapts its system depending on your level.
For example, I had already studied GMAT before using this prep and therefore was able to quickly finish the program.
I especially liked its program on the SC. Most of my time was dedicated to SC, perhaps because it was my weakest point (yes, I needed to improve on SC) and my SC became the strongest section when I wrote my last GMAT.
I would recommend this to anyone, especially if you are struggling with SC.

First, it was excellent preparation for the format and timing of the real exam. The course is computer-based and adaptive, just like the GMAT, so it?s much better practice than studying using books or a non-adaptive website. When I took the live GMAT, my timing and pacing were just right thanks to the way the program forced me to hone my time management skills. I was able to work through the real exam calmly and methodically because I had had so much realistic practice. The real exam was automatic for me.
Second, the quant part of the course was very effective for me. I studied engineering, but it had been years since I?d taken a course or test and the course presented all of the math topics for me to revise. After working through the explanations of, for example, rate problems, I then had the chance to work exam-type problems increasing in difficulty as I proved I could do the easier ones. I never had to spend much time doing easy problems and was able to quickly move onto doing lots of practice at the right level for me. The quant problems were very similar to the level and type of problems I got on the real GMAT.
Finally, I thought the progress chart and score forecaster were very motivating. I enjoyed seeing my progress line increase week on week. The score forecaster was introduced later in the course for me (perhaps they just rolled it out). The score forecaster was very accurate for me. It predicted my GMAT score as 750-760 and I got 760 on the live GMAT.
I don?t think the Reading Comprehension was as good as the other components. In the program, you read a passage and then answer a single question, unlike the real exam, which presents a passage followed by about 4 questions. I mentioned this to the customer service and they were not defensive at all ? they said they knew about this and were going to change the RC I believe. Also, the Skype tutoring sessions are a good idea, but the instructors weren?t well prepared for my sessions. I relied mostly on the self-study aspect of the course, which was enough for me.
I was definitely impressed by the course, especially the adaptive nature of it and the way it zeroed in on problems at the right level of difficulty for me at each point of the course. It?s easily the best online study tool I?ve come across.

Focused and adaptive, this is the most efficient test prep I have ever done. The tone is conversational/instructional, and the pacing is energetic, but not hasty. It really feels like being with a highly skilled tutor, and has the plus of giving feedback on an objective basis. It does have the limit of forcing you through everything (although you can quickly pass a section if you perform perfectly, you must spend time with it, even if just 20-30 minutes.) Questions scale in difficulty, with there almost always being a focus on strategy. Bad answers will result in clues or advice, and right answers may prompt a further explanation, but there is an assumption that first you try. The adaptive system makes smooth transitions from focus to focus, different skills and topics, and at the same time chooses questions that are targeted for your learning level. Really, perfect presentation 95% of the time, making it better than any human or single book. The test grading is EXTREMELY informative, all of it, quant, verb, and essay, almost worth the costs, as you could vastly improve your score with that information alone. The live tutors have not proven useful to me, but I know some people who love hearing from a human. There is a long delay as of when I started (about 24-36hrs) and I find the automated system combined with the occasional online search regarding something quant to be perfect and expedient. I think live chat room tutors would be needed to really perfect the system, but I can imagine that would be prohibitively expensive for the company (the tutors are supposed to be tops in the skill they answer for.)

The Cons, you cannot specifically choose a topic to cover on your own, it feeds you what it assumes you should learn. You have the option to choose Verbal, Quant, or both, with a time limit up to one hour a session. You also have the option to choose a lesson plan yourself, but I noticed this was limited to not cover every topic.
If you do not have your foundations MASTERED, you are flat out of luck. It will take off without you, giving the impression of course filled with trick concepts to memorize and "ballpark" strategies.
After 30 + hours, Data Sufficiency was not even covered. Another draw back is not having a table of contents, a syllabus, or textbook resources. Everybody should have the foundations mastered(eventually), and I don't believe the Economist assumes you are completely fresh on the topics, but this course does not offer a review of the material at all.
This was the first of it's kind, revolutionary in a sense, but I don't think it was well thought out. Not having a specific strategy, a table of contents, or additional resources can get very frustrating for a student with exam deadline pressure. To improve the course I would suggest The Economist GMAT add a syllabus and additional resources in the form of textbooks and questions that relate directly back to the test itself.

The great thing about this program is that whenever you get something wrong, some kind of exercise, it keeps on giving you that kind of exercise until it checks that you got it and you can do it!
Also the fact that if you get questions wrong it provides you promptly with the explanation of why you answered that way and how to answer correctly, contrary to gmat classes where you have to wait for the weekly lesson to know the right answer or contrary to gmat books, where you just get demotivated if you get the question wrong.
I still havent taken another official test to test if and how much i actually improved, but i definitely think i did therefore I highly suggest it to anyone out there!

So far, my score has improved about 40 points, from 530 (diagnostic) to 570. I hope to dramatically improve my score after completing the second half of the program.

I started to use it and I was surprised when after 7 days, I knew more about some topics that I had studied a few weeks ago, specially in the Verbal section, where I got a deep view not only in some of CR techniques but also in RC.
I am going to take the GMAT in October, and I think I will be ready for that date with the help the tutor.

I am improving really fast in the verbal part, as it also helps me to improve my English proficiency, so it will save me time when I have to take the TOEFL.
About the numerical and algebraic part Its been harder as I am learning techniques I did't use ever before. The application teaches you the adequate techniques and help you with tips all the time. Moreover, you can always ask a personal tutor who will answer you in a few hours most of the time.
I recommend this Course Specially if you are living outside of the US, your mother language is not English and also if it is your first approach to one of this type of exams.

60 point increase in 3 weeks!
- Teacher:

Here are the pros of the course:
-you get to pick (to some extent) what areas you focus on (i.e. you can pick to do a mix of verbal and quant or just one or the other. This is particularly great if you are really strong in one area, but weak in the other
-the essay grading service that comes with it is pretty awesome - it's actually a person that scores your essay and provides feedback - this really helped me hit on all the points I needed to get a 6/6 final score on my essay.
-the computer adaptive/artificial intelligence tutoring system is great. It measures your progress and focuses in on your areas of weakness. It also seems to pace it according to your strengths, spending less time on the areas you are naturally good at/already understand.
-you can do it at your own pace and on your own time. Your sessions can be as short as 5 minutes (this is especially great for lunch breaks)
-the mobile app lets you study on the go (My bus rides were so much more productive).
Cons:
-The only thing I didn't like was that I couldn't really skip ahead to certain topics... i.e. the math course comes in a certain order and you have to complete certain sections before others. This was only a problem for me because I only had 3 weeks and I knew I wasn't going to be able to finish the whole course. I wanted to be able to skip ahead to the IR material but couldn't do so. In the end, it was ok. I scored 8/8 on the IR section (to give you an idea I literally scored 1/8 on the Manhattan practice test and without any other prep scored 8/8 on the real test, which makes me think Manhattan's IR practice test still needs to be tweaked a bit).
Things I didn't try (but am sure are awesome)
-Verbal material - I didn't do any of the verbal stuff because I was already scoring in the 99th percentile for that section. I am sure this section would be particularly good for sentence correction!
-Ask a Tutor or Skype Tutoring sessions - I didn't really have time for this, but I'm sure it would've been useful!
Bottom line: you get a 1 week free trial. If you dedicate enough time to it (probably about 10 or so hours in that first week) you will get a really good idea of how useful this tool will be for you. And you have nothing to lose! You get access to the complete package, just like you would if you paid for it, so you will really get a good idea of what you are going to be paying for.
In the end I took my score from a 700 (pre economist, post Manhattan guides) to a 760 in just 3 weeks. My Quant score went from a 40 to a 49. I can honestly say that was 100% due to the 36 hours I devoted to using the Economist course.
Feel free to let me know if you have questions.

I was studying for my gmat on top of having a full time internship, which proved quite challenging at times as books are unwieldy and not motivating. The Economist Gmat Tutor really helped me take advantage of every single break -even just 15 minutes- to maximize my time and results.
Explanations are very clear and you can email a tutor at any time during a study session. You can either choose your lessons yourself or let the course take you through learning points and practice questions.
The support you get from tutors is very professional and helpful and they work hard to create a comfortable learning environment on this platform.
The tool itself makes you progress at your own pace, gradually adapting to your level.
While it's more on the expensive side, the investment is worth it for the quality of service you get.

The difference good prep makes

Going through the book and the videos was a terrible way to approach the GMAT in the time frame I was working with. On exam day, I did terrible. I did not do proper due diligence into prep programs and thought from previous experience with Kaplan that their material would suffice. I was wrong.
After the exam, I did much more research on forums such as this one, and tried out a few different prep providers eventually going with The Economist.
A few big reasons why:
1. 7 day free trial that is the real version, not a demo version. I got to jump right into studying and the tool is the easy to use. No videos, no books, no gimmicks. Just strategy in order to attack questions.
2. Interview with instructor during free trial. I was contacted by the Instructor (Isaac) during my free trial to setup an assessment of my progress over the 7 days. Now, for me this set them apart, as I had nothing investment in their product but they still took the time to talk to me and give feedback. After this I felt comfortable with the tool, and with the people behind it.
3. The immediate progress. I spent the first two weeks, kicking myself because of all the simple tips and methods presented that help attack questions in a quick and effective manner. I work long hours and the flexibility of being able to log on any where and tackle a 30min (or whatever time you can spend) session is great. It also makes you feel like preparing is manageable with a heavy workload when you can tackle studying in pieces.
4. The solution. For me, and the way in which I learn, The Economist GMAT Tutor is perfect. Watching videos, and reading books might be best for you, but if you are like me, doing and working through problems and making mistakes and then learning from those mistakes is what works for me. The Economist simplifies everything. No nonsense approach. I am looking forward to rewriting the GMAT now, as my confidence and ability have improved.
I highly recommend The Economist.

This course is very adaptive. It asked me questions at my level of understanding. Incase if I answered some questions and I got them wrong, the course would adapt to my thinking and it would come down to my level of understanding.
The best part I liked about this course was that each topic had a "summary" section. This was of great help on the day before I took the gmat test. I just went through all the summaries before giving the actual test.
What really helped me were the personal tutor sessions. Even though I had to wake up at 6am and 7am on some days, the personal tutor sessions helped me a lot as I got an opportunity to ask several questions to the tutor. My personal tutors Jane (math) and Ilana (verbal) were of great help. They guided me to the right path.
I also admire the customer support services of this course. I always got a reply to my questions within 24 hours.
The 3 stimulated tests really showed me the topic I was weak at and the tests give detailed explanation of the answers. Thus, I advise everyone that if you are taking this course, and if you are taking the stimulated tests, spend about 2 hrs going through the explanations as to why you got the answers wrong. This will really strengthen your abilities to answer the questions in the right format.
Apart from that, in general, this course was of great help and I improved my scores by 230 points. I put in 3 hrs a day everyday for 2 months in to this course. Be prepared to put in a lot of effort into this course. It's worth it !

The Data sufficiency topics are super great, so when you set for your real Gmat test Data Sufficieny prblems will be mostly a piece of cake .
*note, it is recommended to spend studying more than 2 hours per day if you are planning to take the test after 1 or 2 months since the content of the course is not short and covers everything you need to pass Gmat !

Thanks to the course I managed to raise my score from an initial 620 that i got on a simulation exam i took before the course began to a 700 on the actual day (from a quant 35 to a quant 47!).
The only area that I think may need improvement is the RC part which is still not up to the level of the rest of the topics.

Concepts are explained clearly, with different tactics (video, small exercises, etc.) used in different areas of the curriculum. The tailored algorithm works surprisingly well, too, and I noticed that the program after a while tended to give me questions in areas that I knew represented my weaknesses.
But what makes the program work at the end of the day is the incredible support staff that responds to any questions almost immediately. You can ask them about any topic and expect a clear explanation soon after. The live tutor sessions via Skype are also helpful to talk through test-taking strategy, although I didn't use all my allotted sessions. The folks on the other end are always courteous and I got the sense that they are truly committed to making their program as easy to use as possible, especially in their development of the iPad app and other changes made as I was taking the course.
There are, as others have noted, some small weaknesses that I'm sure will be improved as the program is developed further. The section for Integrated Reasoning is still small, and the simulation tests don't include IR which means you'll need to use other sources to find proper practice tests that are the real deal. And it would be nice to have the option of slightly more control over the content, although in my case it was nice to have sessions planned for me. Finally, this program took me 6 months to get through - don't plan on spending a few weeks on prep if you use it.
All told, if you're self-motivated and short on slots of time during the week to take a full-fledged class, I cannot imagine a better option. I recommend this program wholeheartedly.

While nothing is perfect, I really only had a few small complaints regarding the Economist GMAT Tutor. The first is more an issue with my lack of time as I did not have time to get to some of the sections that I knew I needed more time with like Geometry and Combinatorics. I also wanted to review the exponents section a few days before the test but you are unable to select specific topics. I also had two technical issues, the first on my work computer where I am unable to login via IE because of a "no transport" error. However, it is a work computer so who knows what restrictions are causing the issue but Firefox worked without a problem. I also tried to use the course on a first generation iPad and some of the scientific notation fonts would not render which made learning the Quant sections impossible but selecting Verbal only was still available while I was mobile.
The constant interaction required with this course is guaranteed to keep you involved in the learning and forces you to learn the material.

My biggest criticism of this service as a whole (besides the lack of android support) is the lack of any form of a literal or figurative "back" button. You cannot go back and review old questions, and you cannot go back and re-learn old lessons. Their explanation for this misses the mark. They will never convince me that there would be no value in being able to go back as well as forward in their linear pedagogy.
Overall, I am grateful it's available. I feel like it's well worth the cost, but my big hope is that this sort of format catches on on a wider scale for not only test prep but also other types of interactive self-directed courses.

Pros:
- Adaptive, meaning it will learn your strengths and weaknesses (through quizzing) and will give you problems that challenge you repeatedly, till you get better at them.
- Summary of your personal strong/weak topics is provided
- Very good support via internet/phone -- you will get a response in less than a day to any inquiries regarding problems you do not understand
-Thorough coverage of material in every topic, with more time dedicated to topics that are more frequently tested
- Good practice exams (minus the first diagnostic one-- I think this has many more challenging/strange problems than the others, my opinion..) that are quite reflective of performance/level of the official GMAT exams. Gives you confidence going into the real exam.
-Computer-based program, so you get used to solving problems on a computer
Cons:
- Statistics could be improved to give you a better sense of strengths and weaknesses per topic (rate of making mistakes, average time per question....)
- Tutoring sessions provided didn't really help me. I used 1 out the 4 available

I am giving 4 stars instead of 5 for functional shortcomings of the website: I would really like to see more features such as the ability to go "back" in instances of a misclick, the ability to "exit" a session in progress and the ability to replay whole modules. The site does give you summaries of each modules and revisits them with practice questions and reminders throughout but sometimes I would like to just go through the section again.
All in all, I think this program is going to boost my GMAT score tremendously over my initial practice test.

Strong GMAT preparation system that adapts to your ability as you proceed

I initially purchased and studied from a Kaplan GMAT textbook. Although I was able to score a 680 on my first GMAT test, this score was not to my satisfaction as I am aiming to attend an Ivy League MBA program or receive a very generous scholarship for another solid MBA program.
When studying from the Kaplan text, I could only learn so much as it catered to an "average" test taker. I wasn't able to expand on the technique I already knew, and because of this I wasn't able to score in the 700's.
I have only studied with GMAT Tutor for one month, but have already noticed a drastic improvement in my GMAT test-taking ability. GMAT Tutor is a computer adaptive program that adjusts the level of difficulty of the material to suit your needs as a student.
As a test-taker that is aiming for a top score, the GMAT Tutor study program has exceeded all my expectations, and has thus far prepared me well to reach a score well beyond 700.
Very good pacing in the GMAT Tutor
- Teacher: Issac Bettan
- Recommended for —Verbal: Yes Math: Yes
- GMAT Scores —Before: 650 After: N/A
- Personalized guidance from the tutor, in this case was Issac, who was very patient and gave valuable tips
- Good pacing, if you dedicate approximately 70 hours in total, you should be able to finish the course in three months
- Good for students who are working / parenting at the same time as the courses are fluent and not just questions, there is a simple feedback system
- Dynamically changing question set ensures that the full list of questions are taught
- Short 30 minutes quick lessons such that you can still fit in the course when you are too busy; this can be extended to a longer time period
Minus points:
- Relatively expensive for an online course
- Ability to only choose from Quant/Qual; and not in a more granular axis - for example if you would like to focus on data sufficiency etc
My suggestion is still, take the course for 7 days - there should be a trial period, to see if you would like the format before you take the plunge.

Good course for math and SC
- Teacher:
- Recommended for —Verbal: Yes Math: Yes
- GMAT Scores —Before: N/A After: N/A
For those who never took the GMAT, this course is great. It forces you walk through everything. I have a strong math background and it still helped me with the tricks needed for quick and efficient solving. The course simplify complex subjects, even the hard-to-nail probability with combinatorial questions.
In the verbal section, this course do wonders with SC. I started with a very weak sentence correction and now I have a great statistics of about 1 mistake for every 10-11 SC I do. In the reading comprehension and the critical reasoning I found the explanations good but not great, so it is now my weakest point.
The biggest problem I found with the course wasn't in the content. It was the UI and the statistics tool. The website only tells you your stronger and weaker points but does not change it as you get better at certain point. The statistics tool only tells you how much of the course you have completed, and no statistics of the success rate of the different subjects, which was much needed for me. At some point I started my own statistics and wrote down on a paper where I was wrong or right. It turned out that my statistics were completely different from those presented to me at the course website.
As for the UI, there is help window on the side of every question. A great idea and really helpful, only it's about a square inch and the content needs more than that. It's really tiny and you can't properly read what is inside. The same goes for the home screen where you cannot easily find the subjects you want to revise, it's just a long, long list of subjects.
Moreover, no android app so I couldn't enter the website from either my phone or my tablet. That's a shame, because I spend almost two hours everyday going to wok and back and this time could have been more productive.
Overall, I recommend the course for those who do not need a boost in just one subject, but a complete start-over. It is thorough, and teaches you almost everything you need to know.
Good luck!

Hello,
in October 2012 I took the GMAT for the first time after months of preparation and got a score of 360. I was devestated. Then I tried The Economist GMAT Course. Although my motivation should have been below zero, this Tutor really made me sit at the desk for hours I never did before with such a good mood. In Feburary I took the GMAT for the second time and scored 560.
560 doesn't sound too good, but for me it's awesome and well enough. I am gladfull for the Tutor.
Not sure if the Tutor still offers a refund if one doesn't score high enough. But don't count on that. Because I think the software makes it almost impossible to reach the required amount of work time to be able to get a refund. But that was only my personal impression. And in the end, I scored so good, that it wasn't a problem.
Try it out. It's a good investment.

I began with GMAT tutor trial and before I knew it, I started loving devoting time to Math and Verbal sessions on Economist tutor. The most important part that the GMAT tutor did was to convince me that you do not have to be a geek or a Math wizard to crack the GMAT Math section. With the knowledge of basic formulas, time management, and "ball parking " (a good and valid guess based on your limited Math knowledge), you can handle the Math section well. Solving the problem step by step and consuming time will lead nowhere. Even with reading passages, CR questions, GMAT tutor imparted nice tips and tricks that helped me race against the time on GMAT exam day.
I loved logging into my Economist tutor account and going through different topics one by one even if it was for 30 minutes at a time. For me it was fun and interactive without the price tag of a live tutor. GMAT tutor would introduce a topic, explain, and make me do practice questions on the current topic right then.
Although GMAT tutor is excellent, I would still recommend taking as many practice tests as possible including the GMAT tutor practice tests. If someone wants, she can add books (Princeton/Nova/GMAT official guides/Manhattan) to her GMAT material. For example, for Math I also referred Nova and grockit.com in addition to GMAT tutor.
Overall, investing time and money on GMAT Tutor is worth the consideration.

Pros: -Program offers a unique perspective on difficult math concepts, in most cases better than any other test prep program
-You cannot passively go through answers, the program forces you to stay focused and on track
- Concepts are presented in a way that the materials builds on itself
Cons: - They need to be more transparent about the time commitment this program requires if you want to get through all of the material. If you are working 50+ hours a week, you need a couple of months
- **my biggest con**- For folks who have taken the GMAT in the past, you cannot choose the concepts you wish to work on, you must stay in sequential order. I understand why they want users to follow a certain sequence of lessons, but for $500+ dollars, they need to be a bit more flexible

A course that covers all aspects in math and verbal

I was researching for some courses online, and I read about the 70 point assured increase in the GMAT Economist course. I payed 1$ and went through with the course for a week! I realised how intensive the course was and how well planned it was. I paid the rest and started cracking.
The course has an option of choosing between the math and verbal sections or allowing the software to choose the pace for you.
I went with the software as there is a fine balance between both the sections.
The basics of math which I needed to brush up, were neatly presented and explanations were made simple. This, along with some sums after every concept was very useful. In the verbal section, there was an intense focus on sentence correction, which I think I needed as I am not a native english speaker. The CR question types were covered strategically. The explanations for how to crack the RC's were good, but I felt there were not many questions in this field.
Another highlight of the Economist GMAT prep is the fact that its extremely easy to review the concepts you have studied. There is no need to take notes, because its already there! So, before each test, reviewing concepts were made easy.
I used the classes for both math and verbal and the teachers were extremely smart and helped me (I left these for the end, something which I regretted. If I had cleared my doubts regularly, it would have been better)
On the exam day, I was well prepared but I was still a bundle of nerves.
My score increased by 90 points, but I have not reached my target score yet.
Im not giving up, Ill definitely beat the GMAT one day.
I would recommend the Economist GMAT Course to both people who have taken the test and those who haven't as the course content is extensive and it adapts itself to your skill level! Definitely worth the investment!

My favorite part about the course is the fact that you can start a session at any time for as short as five minutes. I generally prefer the 20-30 minute sessions, but if I'm pressed for time sometimes I'll squeeze in a shorter one. The program seems to use a solid algorithim and the lessons are very educational. I was afraid that a computer course would be too dry (compared to a live course) and I would get bored quickly, but the program is pretty fun and presents a really good course of study. The only drawback to any online course is that you have to be self motivated, but if you can handle that, this is a great course.

Practice tests are realistic but I thought the scores were low compared to what I got on the actual exam. Tutor sessions are via Skype.
Would be 5 stars except: Essays are generally returned within 2 days, but I had to wait a week for one of them. Limited instructions at the beginning. I.E. no instructions saying don't take a test, use a tutor session, or send in an essay until you've completed this portion of the course. I only found out after I had used a test, tutor sessions, and sent in essays too early.
The GMAT classes are great.

When I started practicing for GMAT using Manhattan, my score improved from the range of 630-650 to 680-690 during the last few months of 2012. I was flip-flopping between Maths and Verbal, sometimes my Maths was low and Verbal was high, while at other times my Maths was high and Verbal was low.
I purchased GMAT Tutor in the middle of January, and practiced several hours of the day in front of the computer. By the mid of March, my score was flip-flopping between 710-730. It was a great improvement. My Maths core was solidified by tricks mentioned by the GMAT Tutor. Basic Sentence Correction was strengthened and Reading Comprehension was not tiring anymore. The essay practice improved my essay score to the range of 5.0-5.5.
I would like to see the following improvements:
- After I completed 80%-90% of the tests, the GMAT tutor focused only on limited weak areas. I would like it to cover even the areas where I was strong so that I get more practice.
- Cover Integrated Reasoning questions
- Improve Sentence Correction
- Sample GMAT Test not reliable
I would recommend this course for anyone just starting to prepare for GMAT. I have wasted countless months relying on books and not advancing to magic 700 figure.
After doing this course and reaching 700 figure, please complete at least 10-12 mock tests. You can buy these mock tests from Manhattan, 800-score, or Veritas.
Before the GMAT exam, I did one mock test every day.

It doesn?t matter the level I have, the program will adjust to my pace and knowledge, topics that are easy will go fast, and those topics that are difficult will present extra exercises and explanations.
I feel that this program is helping to improve my English as well; explanations in the Verbal prep are good grammar tips that are helping me to prepare my English proficiency exam too.
Support is amazing, I have received a satisfactory answer to all the questions I set to the tutors; they always give a quick and clear answer when I need a clarification.
I have used the program 2 to 3 hours per day, I feel the improvement, I have my appointment in 2 weeks, probably is not going to be the last one, I will post an update after my result. Right now I feel that I have chosen the best option available in Gmat preparation. (My status: I have used the program for 1 month, 2 to 3 hours per day, I have completed 1/3 of the program. I need over 710, and I have 8 weeks more available to prepare exams).

I used to score around 570-600 on all available simulation tests, I needed only a score of 600+ to get where I want... however I took GMAT economist mandatory simulation test with a result of ridiculous 490.
I completed only 75% of the quant section which is where I needed improvement, and 35% of the verbal. In total I put in about 60h of studying in it. I wouldn't say the app is as adaptive as advertized and the price is obviously too high, but on the other hand these are the market prices.
Tips&tricks in the course boil down to using educated guessing, which isn't something you haven't learned through your education.
My real GMAT score was 530, therefore I'm in for one more attempt. I would recommend this course if you have iPad or a smartphone, because you can access it easily anywhere. But most of all I would recommend you to work really hard and don't give up. There is no "snake oil" easy solution to high GMAT score, I think the economist's GMAT is a handier than written materials, and helps to organize your learning... (saving you about 1/3 of the time).

And I saw the GMAT tutor from the economist and signed up for it. And guess what, even though my improvement seems small- only 40 points, but the programme has really helped me improved on areas that I did not do well. And I think I should have signed up for this course earlier, instead of trying save the money, that would have saved me 3 months to half a year of preparation time.
Pros:
- self paced.
- structured course that can adapt to your learning, and this can save you a lot of time. Preparing for GMAT should not take too long, more effort should be spent on applying for the school you want isn't it?
- Very clear instructions and feedbacks from the computer. I actually think I don't need an instructor to be honest. And in case you need, you can always schedule 1 with the tutor.
Cons:
- Questions in the Verbal section is easier the actual GMAT test. But this is not a big problem. The Economist GMAT course will teach you all the fundamentals you need to know.
Once you complete the course, just do the free prep questions/tests from GMAT Preptest from MBA.com and more practices online to familiar yourself with the difficulty.
Would I recommend it? Yes I will, wholeheartedly. My wife is preparing for her GMAT now and she signed up for the The Economist GMAT course too. And I just got an offer and scholarship from one of the world's top 50 university. Thank God!

All up, I couldnt imagine a gmat course to be much better. The tutors reply promptly to questions with tailored responses and are very helpful. The adaptive nature of the course is great too as it forces you to work on areas in which you need more practice.

The effective style/teaching methods taught in this course really did help me look at the GMAT in a way never before. I was seriously in shock how SC questions really worked.
All in all, I would HIGHHHHLLLYYYYY recommend this course to anyone thinking about taking the GMAT. I would suggest taking this course and fully completing it before jumping to the OG material. Your accuracy an timing will be better if you do this in my opinion.

I graduated college in 2011 and took a course with Manhattan GMAT - free through work - that fall. But I decided that I was not yet ready to think about or apply to business school and postponed indefinitely. However, I became vaguely familiar with the GMAT and the logic behind the exam.
Fast forward to February 2013, I decided to take the GMAT in May/June. I had all the books from Manhattan, so I started using them. But due to work schedule, and lack of motivation on my end, it became really difficult to concentrate on studying using books. Enter Economist GMAT.
Seemed like a fair deal after the 1 week trial and purchased it (thankfully, subsidized by work again). And I started plugging away.
Pros-
1. Easy to cover material. You're working on a computer and doing lessons at your own pace. This is really important. I have a fairly decent verbal background, so I was able to run through a lot of the verbal lessons while taking time on the Quant portion. This is also a definite weakness in actual in-class programs like Manhattan - they have to spend time on everything depending on the class. I was in class with a bunch of engineers who breezed through the quant and we spent more time on verbal. But then again, you had an instructor who could help you if you were stuck etc
2. Tracking system is good. It tracks your strong lessons and your weak lessons, which is good to know.
3. I think the Practice GMATs are decent. No expert here though. I scored 710, 650 (hungover), 690 (missed 5 quant questions at the end) in the three exams. There are 2 more left for me to do.
4. One of one tutor sessions on Skype. I had one - wasn't really useful. I didn't really have a lot to discuss, hence it wasn't really useful. I think it'll be useful if you have specific topics you need help with.
5. Value for money at 400$ something.
Cons-
1. Some sections are not that great. For CR, I bought Powerscore CR Bible as recommended on BTG and it's incredible. Same for SCs with Manhattan Strategy Guide. Again, this is really for bumping your verbal scores from ~41 to mid-40s
2. Can't comment on Quant. I'm using questions on BTG, GMat Club, OG and I need all the help I can get. My performance is inconsistent and I'm aiming for ~48+
3. No question banks. Really useful feature of Manhattan GMAT.
4. No way to reset GMAT exams like in Manhattan.
5. Reading comprehension passages are limited and constantly reappear in lessons/exams etc to the point where you become really familiar with some of the passages.
For my preparation, I'm currently using:
Economist GMAT.
OG 13
OG Quant
Powerscore CR Bible
Manhattan GMAT SC, RC, Number properties
Veritas Combinatorics and Probability Guide.
BTG Flashcards
BTG daily Questions
GMAT Club - Bunuel Quant sets.
That's all from me. I'll edit this after my GMAT.

Pros:
- the tool works if you have time to devote to acing the GMAT.
- Very thorough with all of the material.
- Tool adapts to your strengths and weaknesses. If you are an all-star in one section, the tool will push you to your limits by giving you tough questions to continuously challenge you in that one section. However, completing a series of difficult questions will make you mentally exhausted, so you'll need study breaks. Similarly, if you are struggling in one section, the tool will spend more time helping you to understand the fundamentals and the reasoning behind why the answers that you select are incorrect.
- I received a one-year subscription to The Economist magazine. I enjoy reading this on my iPad on the weekends. This magazine is more internationally focused than most US newspapers/magazines.
Cons:
- Course is not short. Takes several months worth of commitment to complete the course. Be sure that you have the time to reach your goals.
- Question types are slightly different that the official GMAT questions. So it is essential to use the Official Guide after completing the course. You will still score well if you don't use the official guide, but I added 40 points to my score by going through the Official Guide after taking this course.
- Tutoring sessions are with tutors from Poland, Israel, Taiwan, so the tutoring times are at odd hours for students in North America (i.e. 10PM - 8AM CST).
- The support for the Integrated Reasoning section is very weak. Use the Official Guide to study for IR; the OG is a much better resource.
- The AWA section is weak. GMAT Tutor provides overview of "how" to write an essay, but doesn't give you a list of sample essay topics and doesn't force you to write practice essays. Use the OG for a list of sample essay topics.
- The tool's advice on Reading comprehension did not work well for me. I tried to follow the tool's advice to first do an initial reading by "skimming" through the passage and jotting down notes, and then digging for details later; however, I found that I scored much higher and I spent much less time by reading the entire passage thoroughly the first time. Going back and fourth between the passage and the questions just took way too much time for me. The skimming method may work for you, but if it doesn't, don't let the GMAT Tutor's suggested RC method hurt your GMAT score.
- The tool's advice on "ball-parking" was, in many cases, more time consuming than solving the problem by shorthand arithmetic. If you're terrible at math, then this "ball-parking" (or guessing) method is an ok approach. Again, you really have to determine which method is the most efficient for you. I suggest following the tool's advice at first, but if the tool's advice isn't working for you after you're 75% complete with the course, then use the method that is most effective for you.
- There were only a few Reading comprehension passages and each passage was repeated too often. It would have been more beneficial if there were more passages.
Advice for students:
- Bring a pen/pencil and a pad of paper to each GMAT Tutor session.
- Do not take this course when tired or distracted. At first it is hard to build up an endurance to study for at least an hour straight, so start off with shorter study sessions. Take breaks between study sessions.
- At the end of the course, attempt longer study sessions to build up endurance.
- Try to understand why you answered questions correctly / incorrectly. Just because you guessed and answered a question correctly doesn't mean that you will do the same on a later date with a similar question.
- Read the fine print on the money back guarantee. Not doing so could cost you $700!!
- Buy the OG for use at the end of the course (especially for the verbal section). The OG is a great resource to help build up your stamina/endurance right before you take the test. I studied with the OG for the 3-4 weeks prior to the real exam. Try to answer each OG question in less than 90 seconds to build your endurance.
- Take tutoring sessions towards the end of the course; bring questions to the tutoring sessions. Tutors are willing help you with questions from the OG or other studying resources. I found tutoring sessions were most helpful when I came to the tutoring session with a list of OG questions that were difficult for me.
- Take the mba.com practice tests right before you take the real GMAT.
- Complete at least 90% of the course before you take the test; I still learned new things at 85% progress. How can you expect to "ace" the GMAT without knowing/understanding all subjects tested?
- Take the real GMAT before taking this course. Taking the real GMAT before taking this course will establish a "baseline" for your 70 point score increase guarantee. Study for this initial GMAT test to maximize your baseline score. If you are not familiar with the GMAT prior to taking this course, you are bound to score poorly on your "baseline" examination.
Good luck!! Wishing you the best of success on your GMAT endeavor!!

GMAT Tutor from The Economist Excellent Test Taking Prep
- Teacher:
- Recommended for —Verbal: No Math: Yes

I spent the summer of 2012 studying with no service or course, but studying smart and with discipline. I worked through a number of books (Official Guide, Kaplan workbooks) cover to cover, taking full timed practice tests every weekend, and simulating test conditions during every practice. I liked the books, and the official software predicted a 710 up from a 630 at the beginning of the summer. I felt good going into my early Sept test, but was very disappointed with my 660 (Q36, V44). I was excited about the Verbal, but I thought I really knew the Quant, and I think I did, but I didn't know how to solve 37 quantitative problems in 75 minutes on the GMAT.
GMAT Tutor changed that. I bought it three weeks before my retake in March 2013, and put in 31 hours during that time. I studied Quant exclusively and was impressed by how it built a base in the most important math fundamentals while working on test taking techniques. I could feel myself getting better at taking the test. A number of challenging problem types began to look much less daunting - I can solve sets better than FGCU can alley-oop on established teams. I only made it through just under half of the quant studying, and even ignoring some critical advice (I catch that thread of how to solve the problem and don't like to let it go) come test day, I managed to boost my scaled score from a 36 to a 45.
GMAT Tutor was the only study tool I used this time around. During my time studying I had four questions for the GMAT Tutor Team, and they replied promptly and with clear explanations. Overall I was very happy with the service, the quality of the instruction, and the algorithmic software that adapted to how I was performing. I highly recommend it for people who need a flexible study schedule and want to squeeze study into any free time with an Internet connection. It worked for me in Internet-hobbled Central Africa.

After another two months of studying, it all paid off when i scored 730 (Q 46/71% ; V 45/99%). Here's my assessment:
Pros:
- The algorithm works. You end up drilling your weaker subjects and quickly advancing in the ones you grasp well.
- Better results than classroom experience, at least for me. Studying for GMAT with other people who come with their own strengths and weaknesses was sub-optimal for me. You inevitably waste tons of time reviewing concepts you already understand, and breezing over areas where you have gaps in your knowledge. If you need a teacher to push you to actually study and go through problems you probably aren't motivated enough to begin with.
- Lots of quant strategies that save time and reduce errors (e.g. plugging-in where numerous variables are required, ballparking convoluted geometry problems, algebraic rules, etc). I raised my quant score 35 percentiles between first and last exam.
- Explanations that 99% of the time put you down the path of least resistance to the correct answer.
- Verbal content, approach, and test-taking strategies that are second to none. I've used Veritas and sat in on a couple Manhattan classes. Can't speak for quant, but for verbal I thought they were inferior. I scored 99 percentile on verbal by studying solely the Economist and GMAC OG.
Cons:
- Over-reliance on the prescribed methodology for certain quant problems. GMAT seems to benefit flexible thinking. It's not always in your interest to approach a type of problem with identical methods (e.g. "I see this problem, therefore i construct a table and do x, y, and z"). I found gmatquantum and khanacademy useful in seeing alternative ways to think through problems.
- Not the friendliest UI. The summary screen makes it incredibly painful to review concepts previously covered. You can only drag a tiny scroll bar through rows and rows of data jammed into a small box. God i hope they've updated this...for your sake. Also, the "ask a tutor" system seemed pointless and duplicative. I'd imagine these things are being improved upon now.
My two cents:
- If you go with Economist, use it to understand strategies and core concepts, and get your timing down with practice problems and tests. Then supplement with lots of GMAC OG problems and explanations from forums. GMAT forums were invaluable in filling knowledge gaps and refining strategies for attacking problems.
- Get in the right state of mind. For me this meant committing the hours and concluding that I would not leave this earth without a 700+. Even if i had to take the test 20 times I would get there.

That being said, Master GMAT attracted me because of their flexible study approach (online) and having an interactive course compared to just using books. I would say it was more engaging than using books, and easier to access since you really don't need anything more than a computer. However, it also had some serious draw backs.
1. Customer Service
Master gmat opperates out of Isreal, so getting someone on the phone if you have any kind of question and live in North America is nearly impossible. This would not be such a big issue if their website was designed better. For example, the other day my course ended, and I was locked out. I tried to sign up again on a weekly basis, but the only way you can sign up is if you "upgrade" online to something more expensive than your original purchase. Therefore, I had to WAIT to purchase the weekly option until someone from Isreal was able to contact me. When you have a busy schedule, little things like this are incredibly frustrating.
2. Knowledge Base of Tutors
I can't really speak to the verbal tutor, as I think I only used that tutor once, but the quant tutor was not very helpful. You have the option of asking a question online, and each time I would ask a question she would simply copy and paste the answer that was already in front of me as her response. How in the world is that helpful? Also, I had a tutoring session with her via skype. She was 15 minutes late, and then proceeded to get questions wrong that we did through the course.
My recommendations--take the course, but I would not waste my money on having access to the tutors (either through a session or online) as they were not helpful at all!!!

I took a Veritas practice test before I bought the Solo package and got a 640. Pretty solid place to start, I thought - plus MasterGMAT was offering a $151 discount, so even better (I paid $299 total).
I loved the adaptive learning model. It caters to what you need to learn to succeed - it goes faster if you already know the topic, and slower if you are having trouble with it. I will say that they repeat questions towards the end of the course, but who doesn't? I will also say that some of the Verbal questions are not super hard, so if you are aiming for 99% percentile I would suggest using supplemental materials. Otherwise, bottom line is if you can get to completing 80% of the course you will be in really good shape.
It also allows you to set the session duration. Most of us have day jobs, and sometimes I really don't feel like studying for a full 2-3 hours after a long day. MasterGMAT allows you to set the session duration to as low as 5 min. That gives me motivation to put in some time to study every single day. Who doesn't have 5 min? And they also have this little chart where you can see your progress, which I absolutely loved.
I also enjoyed having the opportunity to talk with a real tutor over Skype. I didn't need too much explanation regarding the contents themselves, as the website was already doing a great job, but I thoroughly enjoyed getting advice in exam strategy and time management. It gave me confidence that I will do well, which is very important to me. Of course, if you need help with the contents themselves I am sure that they will do a great job as well.
All in all, I really enjoyed the course, and it prepped me well. I never finished the course as I ran out of time to study, but I did finish 80% of it and also did 3 practice tests (crucial - DO NOT SKIP THEM) before taking the GMAT. I was lucky to have gotten a 740 (Q50, V41) in my first try, but I also know that I would not have gotten the score I wanted if it weren't for MasterGMAT.
Thank you MasterGMAT and its team for everything!

Very Happy I stumbled upon this course

Here is my story.
I started prepping in March 2012 and took the exam first time in July, but of course the net study time was much less, maybe 60 days. I studied mainly from
1) Manhattan GMAT study guides (8 of them, close to 2000 pages) and I literally finished over 90% of the material, very diligent studying, and I revised most the material again from Manhattan.
2) I solved all PS questions from Kaplan Advanced with a very high accuracy
2) I solved all of the OG problem solving but little on the OG verbal
3) I studied CR from CR Bible Power Score
I sat for the exam in July and my score was a miserable 580. This was a shock
Here are the mistakes/conclusions I made:
A) Biggest mistake: I did not practice with timing at all. I used to get all the questions in Manhattan and Kaplan correct but without timing, so some questions took like 5 minutes or 7 minutes and I assumed the most important is understanding the concept so when I see it again on the exam I will solve it fast and correct. On the exam I ran out of the time and left the last 5 questions blank on the Quant and 1 question in the verbal.
B) Manhattan is very long and too detailed. So by the time I reached the third strategy guide I forgot a lot of what's in the first one. However, this does not mean that I did not get any benefit from Manhattan, it certainly gave me a good foundation
C) Studying from books is boring especially for someone who has a busy life (work, family...etc).
After the disappointing score, someone recommended Knewton online and Master GMAT and I went with Master GMAT, mainly as I saw all their reviews were five stars and for their Artificial Intelligence system that tracks your weak points and consistently gives you questions in such areas till you improve
I took a free trial and I decided to subscribe.
I started on Master GMAT July 15 till August 1st. Stopped for 12 days as my wife was in delivery and then resumed slowly till August 27, then had a family trip and resumed slowly on Sept 10, but studied 1 day and 3 off, and took the test on Sept 25. So net study time was about 35 days, average 2.5 hours a day, for a total of approx 90 hours of study time. (60 Quant and 30 verbal)
And although I almost stopped studying for the last 3 weeks before the test, I still scored 710 (48 Q, 40 V) having finiahed only 60% of the Master GMAT course. If I had mote time to study I feel I would have easily got the 740 to 760 as I could have gained a point or 2 on Quant and 2 to 4 points on verbal.
Here are the key advantages about Master GMAT:
1) From day one, it boosts your appetite as it teaches you the tricks that make you solve every question type in a record time, such as process of elimination and ball parking. You will be amazed at how fast you can reach the answer. Hence, you get thousands of "AHA" moments to questions you previously would have lost interest in solving with the traditional book study method
2) It provides you with summary notes that get posted automatically in your account after each study session is completed. these are very very important for your final review
3) Flexibility to choose the length of the study session from 5 minutes up to hours. and when you finish each session you can start a new session of the length that suits your schedule
4) Performance measurement: it classifies the topics you studied under 3 buttons: weak, medium and strong, based on your performance in each topic.
5) Progress measurement: A graph that tells you what percent you finished so far in Quant and what % in verbal
6) Most Importantly, the intelligent system that detects your weak areas, and analyzes patterns and automatically drives you through the course by giving you the appropriate topic.

Practice Exams are NOT accurate
- Teacher:
- Recommended for —Verbal: No Math: Yes
- GMAT Scores —Before: 610 After: N/A
Though the course covers all the topics, the exams they use are clearly not accurate. During my first exam I was scoring in the 50th percentile in math, and in verbal. As the I continued to take their practice exams, my test scores were shooting through the roof. At first I was happy to see where my score was, (I was scoring in the high 700's). After completing all of the exams from the course, I paid for exams from Manhattan. The first test I scored in the mid 600's. Thought it was a fluke. Took another, again mid to low 600's. I was puzzled to why I was doing so poorly.
And then it all came to me. On the Master GMAT practice exams I was scoring in the 95th percentile in verbal. But still scoring fairly low in the quant section. I was scoring so well in the verbal section because ALL of the Reading Comprehension passages were the exact same passages they provide you while studying. I was already familiar with the passages, and didn't really have to read them in order to answer the questions. Thus giving me a big leg up.
Considering this fact, I'd be very careful as to how much you are willing to trust this course.

As a non-native English speaker, I have difficulties in the verbal section. After doing this course, I managed to increase my verbal score by 10 points. It is especially good in Sentence Correction. Additionally, it improved my accuracy for Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning.
The course is beneficial too for quantitative section. It trained me to think differently. Instead of solving, the course teaches how to use shortcuts on different type of questions while keeping the accuracy level high.

- GMAT Scores —Before: 680 After: 760
During my first attempt I basically was overconfident of the exam. I did prepare for about 1.5 months but my preparation had no method and no direction. All I did was solve 1000s of questions without understanding why I got some wrong. I will not list all the sources I used to practice but let me tell you they were all well known sources.
I found this course on a website of a school I plan on applying to and I was hooked once I started using it during the trial period. The pros that I benefitted from are as follows:
1) Tips and Tricks for solving certain types of questions (Reduces the amt of time you need to solve a tough question)
2) Intuitive understanding of all the questions and question types. This makes you understand what the GMAT team is thinking while preparing the question. This is extremely important. I found that this understanding completely changed my approach to each question.
3) I am actually surprised to say this but I actually developed an intuitive sense of the amt of time I spent on each question without looking at the clock. This course has a little timer clock that appears from time to time and after you have solved the question it asks you to guess how much time you spent on the question.
4) Super cheap compared to other programs available.
5) Great, friendly customer service
6) Everything was online and could be completed at your own pace.
7) App friendly. I used my ipad and iphone all the time with this thing.
Cons
1) Costing could be more flexible.
2) Contacting customer service is hard. Once you contact them though, they are awesome.
3)You have to sit through the entire course to get to a certain topic. Only after you have done so you will be able to access topics by choice. I also think this was an advantage because it was well worth it to sit through the entire course.
Overall, I had an extremely good experience with this company. I not only support the material and method of teaching, but, I also support the companies business model. This online learning module is the way of the future. In fact, I have also recommended this online learning module to my company for some of its training requirements.

First Attempt - 740 - Amazingly helpful course and staff!
- Teacher: Aaron Lin

The verbal section helped me in building up my sentence correction skills. The explanation for each of the wrong answer choices is amazing. It makes you understand the reason behind the elimination of the answer choice properly. The verbal section also helped me build up my Critical reasoning skills by providing a lot of questions to solve and providing extremely helpful elimination techniques. The reading comp questions were really challenging towards the end of the course. I believe that these questions played an important role in my success on the verbal section of the GMAT. Prior to starting Master GMAT course, my verbal accuracy averaged around 55-60%. By the end of the course, I was able to maintain an average accuracy rate of 90% in verbal.
The maths section is pretty good for folks like me. I had a pretty bad maths background. I have never been fond of maths. The Master GMAT course is designed to become increasingly challenging as you answer more and more questions correctly. The algorithm identifies your ability level and after around 80-85% of the course, it starts throwing questions of your level the moment you log in and slowly helps you increase your level.
The question base is huge and the mix of the material and the questions is just right. I am sure that anyone who tries Master GMAT's seven day trial seriously would concur on this point.
The staff at Master GMAT is amazingly helpful, especially Aaron. They are very helpful and reply back pretty quickly. There is a tool inside the Master GMAT interface to directly post questions about a topic of question to the teachers. This is a really helpful tool as it allows the teacher to refer to the exact same slide/question that you were at.
Pros:- Huge question base. Extremely patient and very nice teachers. Superb content.
Cons:- The tests' scoring is not really that great. Don't get me wrong here. The tests are very tough and a very good practice tool. However, their scoring is definitely flawed and almost certainly reports inflated scores. But for the amount of practice these tests provide, it is really something which you can ignore. Trust me!
Overall, definitely worth the money!

For a busy individual like myself, it was the only option I had for studying for the exam.
It was extremely focused, very elaborate on its explanations and adapted quickly to my strengths and (many) weaknesses, not to mention much less expensive than any other alternative.
The course helped me hone my GMAT verbal skills, and although I'm a native English speaker I was able to improve my verbal score from 36 to 41.
The quantitative section improved as well, and managed to simplify difficult problems by using their proprietary techniques.
The Master GMAT exams and essay system is extremely helpful, and I was able to improve my essays, and finally receive a perfect score on the actual test.
Thank you Master GMAT, you made the GMAT ordeal simple and easy!

First, I only had a brief time to prepare for the exam and being able to study online and on my time schedule was very convenient. In addition, the hardship of the exercises was adapted to my level automatically, so I didn't have to waste time on easy exercises or topics that I already mastered. Moreover, in any given moment I could easily go back and look at the material in case I forgot the required technique. Adjacent to every question in the course there is a small flag that lets you easily navigate to the technique required to solve it. Additionally, all the material is conveniently located on the front page of the software and you can go over all the topics at any time, which I did a day before the exam. Finally, the response time of the support team was very fast and professional. I would highly recommend the course. In my opinion, it is a much better option to studying from a set of books.

* I liked the flexibility of doing short or long sessions whenever I get a chance.
* The percentage progress bar is very effective and motivating.
* The course is relatively cheap and gives great value.
* Quant part is good, and I gives good prep even for the tougher questions.
* Verbal part on the other hand gives good prep for the med level questions but not for the difficult ones you will face if you aim to the higher half of the 700-800 range. For those ones who will have to complement the course with difficult questions you can find in GMAT forums online. But if you aim at 700, this course is great !

Although, I didn't utilize all of the course features, I found the course to be very helpful. However, after about 30 hours of GMAT studying, on the website, I got burned out and had a hard time concentrating and reading the text based lessons. Thus, I only made it through about 70% of the verbal material and 50% of the quantitative material. I think that the use of more stimulating learning methods, like videos or learning games might really be helpful. I know that a competition of some sort would also have been helpful for me. Overall, I was extremely pleased with this course and would recommend it highly. I definitely wasn't planning to do this well on the GMAT. With this score I was able to get into the top schools that I had applied for and I even received several academic scholarship offers.

I was really pleased with how comprehensive the course was. I felt I touched on every subject needed for the exam, and I was given access to three full quant/verbal (no AWA) exams, along with a one-on-one session (which I never took). This was a great review for the quant section of the test, and from what I saw of the verbal, it would be extremely helpful for someone trying to master those concepts as well.
The course is tailored to your personal mastery of the concepts -- as you demonstrate mastery, the course moves forward. If you're struggling with a concept, you'll spend more time on it. I liked this format, because in a formal prep class, I'd have been forced to move at whatever pace suited the majority of my classmates.
My only complaint about this course was that once I hit the 85% completion mark on the quantitative section, I started to see the same questions repeated, and I was often tested on the same few higher level concepts that aren't as heavily emphasized n the GMAT itself. I would have liked to continue reviewing the topics widely considered to be the most popular: factoring, number properties, etc., instead of geometry and combinations/permutations.
Overall, though, I would highly recommend this course. The seven-day trial is a great offer as well -- it's what got me hooked.

Unique computer adaptive preparation for a computer adaptive test
- Teacher:
- Recommended for —Verbal: Yes Math: Yes
- GMAT Scores —Before: N/A After: 640
First of all, Master GMAT uses a smart computer adaptive algorithm that makes sure you actually learn the material. It doesn`t let you switch to the next topic unless you actually understand the material inside out. It is only logical to prepare for GMAT, a CAT, with a computer adaptive preparation course.
Secondly, the course is truly exhaustive. Think about any possible question type, including extravagant ones, such as properties of consecutive integers or space diagonals in solid geometry ? it is covered.
Thirdly, the course offers quite a few exclusive techniques to tackle GMAT questions. One of the most useful techniques is ballparking (using common sense when algebraic calculations seem overwhelming), one other technique offers an alternative and more intuitive way to solve Venn-diagram questions. I was literally fascinated by their approach to rate, gap and two-speed problems ? using very complicated examples they would split the problems into comprehensive patterns that explained the finest tricks used by GMAT authors.
Finally, taking the Master GMAT course turned out to be a surprisingly nice experience. Obviously, the text and the customer narrative were written by very smart people with deep expertise in the subject matter (and a good sense of humor). The whole experience felt surprisingly human. The customer support people at MASTER GMAT (Gil and Isaac) were extremely helpful and responsive to my needs. In fact, they actually CARED about my progress.
The Master GMAT course was a great value for money. They offer you a variety of ways to pay for the service, and one of them is a ?pay-as-you-go? weekly $50 fee (the one I used) ? it gives you a chance to progress through your preparation at the pace of your choice.
I am very happy with my experience and I could not find a better preparation for the GMAT test.

At first I was upset but a friend recommended me Master GMAT. The cost was not high and the first trial week was for free so I decided to try. And I was suprised by the quality of this program! It was really good! So I decided to continue it.
I think main advantages of the program:
1) the program is very flexible. It finds your week points and gives you additional exercises to improve. Also you can study anytime and anywhere (I even used a workplace sometimes)
2) the teachers are very experienced and do their best to support you and explain things as clear as possible
3) I learnt many tricks how to solve the tasks in different and easier ways than I used to do before. It also helped a lot.
4) The program teaches and gives good advice on how to control the time you spend during the test (before it was a problem for me; I used to finish the test too early and didn't use the time given efficiently)
5) in my case studying online is more effective - it keeps me more concentrated than studying with books.
I didn't have much time and studied with Master GMAT just for 1 month (about 120 hours). My GMAT score is 640 (Q49, V29). Of course, it is not super-high, but it was a good improvement for such a short period of time. I think for good result you need at least 3 month.
Even though GMAT is quite a tough exam, I really liked it (Math was my favorite subject at school and university). Master GMAT made my preparation for exam more fascinating, more structured and more efficient.

I was too busy at work thus did not attend any courses (money also do matter for me) and was studying myself. Frankly saying, I started Master GMAT free trial just to have free practice and was going to stop when the free period finished. However, while practicing I understood that the course is worth continuing since is really making difference.
First, its algorithm was adaptive as well as GMAT algorithm itself - targeting my personal weak areas. Second, Master GMAT helped me to gradually overcome the wrong habits (such as answering too fast and doing careless mistakes, or applying algebra when ?plug-in? was the right method). I was able not only to learn right strategies and approaches, but, what was the most important - to train and practice applying them under time pressure.
I got verbal 92% and 5 for AWA (I simply learned Master GMAT AWA templates by heart) while being non-native speaker and having quite poor English. It was too little time to improve my English significantly, but it appeared to be enough to improve particular GMAT-relevant verbal skills and improve my scores consequently. Special tools to improve time-awareness also drastically increased my results.
Another important Master GMAT advantage: it allows to choose the length of any practice session yourself - either you have 15 min break or an hour to study - the algorithm prepared the lesson of the corresponding length, thus whatever time to study you have you may use it effectively.
Besides, I had learned numerous innovative methods (tips, hint and short-cuts) - that allow to solve problems faster (comparing to the methods proposed by Manhattans, Kaplans, OG) and organise thoughts. Surely, one can learn techniques to solve problems correctly from books, but books can?t improve one?s skills of solving problems quickly.
Moreover, I was able to turn to live instructor in cases when I was full of doubts, and he really helped me to change some my wrong approaches. Last, but not the least, I really enjoyed the time spent - it was rather computer game and friendly chat than boring studying. I really felt I miss something interesting when my studies finished.
Unfortunately, I didn't manage to finish 15% of MasterGMAT course because of work overload, otherwise it could be higher, I am pretty sure.
The only thing the Master GMAT lacks, as for me, is the course on mastering essays for HBS - that is what I feel, having passed the test.
I do advice everybody just to try free trial - it?s up to you to decide if you go on. You lose nothing but you can gain a lot. Comparing to what you invest in MBA, the price for Master GMAT is nothing, but it can really improve your MBA options, scolarship chancess and future salary oppotunities, thus return of investment is extremely high.

Knowing absolutely nothing about the GMAT beforehand I found it VERY useful for familiarising myself with the structure, timing and general content of the test. I especially enjoyed the interactive nature of the lessons and playful copy. You can tell a huge amount of work has gone into developing the program and the authors really care about your experience - they are very attentive and are available online for extra assistance.
Basically the program works like having a tutor on hand to walk you through all the principles of the GMAT one at a time. Finding it difficult to know where on earth to start with the GMAT I found this really, really helpful. At each step, you are walked through a core principle - a single, clear learning goal is presented at the start of topic with a neat and uncluttered webpage. Each subsequent page builds your skills and confidence and the whole experience seems very playful. I think it's perfect if you are like me and aren't that motivated to plow through a giant book.
You probably still need to go do a bunch of questions in the official GMAT book afterwards but this is a great way to get familiar with all the principles of the GMAT first.

Master GMAT is an ideal interactive learning tool for a GMAT student. When I took my first attempt, I did not have enough time to go through the course material since I had subscribed to it quite late. Further I did not pay much attention to the strategies suggested by Master GMAT in the verbal section. In my first attempt I scored a dismal 560 (Q 43, V 24).
Thereafter I focused on the verbal part particularly since I had already built up my quant ability through Master GMAT study material. And I also took the mock tests provided by Master GMAT. The score in the mock tests were quite close to my actual score. In the second attempt I scored 640 (Q 44, V 34) , a jump of 80 points!!!!
I express my gratitude to Master GMAT and its dedicated team of instructors and recommend this course to GMAT aspirants.

The nice thing about it that it studies your ability and performance.
It enables you full control over when and where to take your lesson since it is on the internet. It allowed me to study and "keep in shape" even when i had to travel abroad
the Quant part was very good, and if you got an answer wrong, they of course explained the right answer, but they also knew why you answered wrong and why I fell for in the ACT tricks. That really helped
The verbal section, which i decided to take afterwards, was very concise and taught me a lot.
On top of the Internet schooling they also provide personal session Via phone or Skype or even in person.I took advantage of that several times and it really helped.
Although it's an internet based course you can always call them or schedule an appointment.
And to top it all, they are responsible of me getting 700 on my first try :-)
In short,I highly recommend the Master Gmat course.

I did the one week mastergmat free trial and found myself working quite a few hours that week. This is because the course spoke back to me, told me when I was wrong, asked questions and responded to my input. It was something very different from the dull books sitting in front of me while my mind would wander somewhere else.
I found that the course was adapting to me, feeding me more practice when needed and not going to the next step until I got it right. And more, it kept me "plugged in"; it asked questions I had to answer, and so it felt very much like live tutoring.
Also, it is great that theory is immediately followed by practice, so I did not need to spend time memorizing formulas without substance.
It was a nice surprise to have a mastergmat representative call me on the phone and have a personalized discussion on the results of my tests and my options for the future. It did not feel like a sales call at all, I felt I got support in deciding on the best option for me, financially and study-wise.
I warmly recommend it, it is the only computer-adaptive course, and I think this makes perfect sense, if you are preparing for a computer-adaptive test.

The main advantage is that you can manage your time effectively and pratice when ever you have time (you are not limited to a frontal class and or any schedule).
You can create your own schedule and you are very independent.
The material is in a very high standard and the the fact that all the work is done on the computer it make you more prepared to the test which is computerized.
the service and support is very good.
the value for money is high and the course is very good.

Luckily, Master GMAT offers a course with maximum flexibility which enabled me to reach a very high level. Behind the system stands a superb group of people who are deeply dedicated to the student's success and who help him achieve it; I ascribe at least 30 points of my final 710 score to the Master GMAT instructors and staff

The adaptive online module seemed tailor made to suit my requirements and the instructors were ready to help in any which way they could.
I recommended the same course to two of my friends who are preparing for GMAT in early 2011 and would do the same for any one else appearing for GMAT.

I had a long lasting battle with GMAT: 2years, Kaplan Classroom course, 3 previous attempts (590, 590 and 610 scores) before I decided to try MasterGMAT for free for a week.
The sheer fun of beating their online system made it interesting to study and practice at my lunch breaks, 30 minutes between appointments.
While I could list many strengths of their course, I'm going to list only two.
1. Of course OG and Kaplan Math workbook give you the questions and strategy (for instance 'Plug-in Numbers to question'). But how many of us practice that strategy? MasterGMAT gives you tons of questions repeatedly (at random times and random days) to let you practice plugging-in numbers until it becomes second-nature to you.
2. The real art of choosing the correct answer for a verbal question is to eliminate 4 wrong ones. MasterGMAT online course teaches you just that.
I was not bad on the GMAT topics. All I needed was to master the testing strategy and timing Talk to the instructors if you have such strategy concerns. They were very helpful.
As a result, I finally took GMAT for the fourth time and scored 680 (85 %ile), improving 70 points. Test-drive it yourself for free for a week.
Best,
K'deen

it has many many questions and many tests - a very important feature in my eyes.
The teachers' Skype sessions are GREAT - that's what made my GMAT, we spent time understanding exactly where i went wrong and WHY, so i couldl earn and improove. only the online Skype lessons were worth the whole thing.
