Work Problem

by The Jock » Wed Nov 24, 2010 7:34 am
Two carpenters, working in the same pace, can build 2 desks in two hours and a half. How many desks can 4 carpenters build in 4 hours?

(a) 2.4.
(b) 3.6.
(c) 4.2.
(d) 5.5.
(e) 6.4

This problem is not that difficult but I want to know different ways to solve this problem.
Thanks and Regards,

M1*D1*H1/W1=M2*D2*H2/W2

2*2.5/2=4*4/W2

W2=6.4hrs

Note that M=Number of workers/person, D=Number of days,H=Number of hours

This problem is not that difficult but I want to know different ways to solve this problem.
If 2 carpenters can build 2 desks in 2.5 hours, then in 2.5 hours, 4 carpenters can build 4 desks, since twice the number of carpenters will accomplish twice the amount of work.

Now we can set up the following proportion:
4 desks/2.5 hours = x desks/4 hours
4/2.5 = x/4
x = 16/2.5 = 6.4.

The correct answer is E.
