Hey Guys,

I am in a bit of dilemma and really need your thoughts on this. I have been working in manufacturing industry(Chemical) since last 10 years as an Instrumentation Engineer. Since i was not getting any opportunity to move up the ladder(bcos some one is already on the ladder), i thought of doing MBA which will open my new avenues in my career. So i gave my GMAT and got 650 in my first attempt. After giving GMAT, i started researching on MBA specialisations which can add to my work experience. But so far i have not yet received any inputs. It would really help me if some one could point me in the right direction

Most top-tier U.S. programs seek candidates with 4-6 years of work experience. Business schools in Europe (such as HEC, Cambridge, INSEAD, LSE) do tend to be a bit older and reward professional leadership experience. INSEAD has campuses in UAE and Singapore, also, if that may be closer to you. You usually want to break a 700 GMAT score in order to be competitive with these schools for full-time programs. The European schools tend to have slightly lower GMAT scores than the U.S. though, with Harvard/Wharton/Stanford usually being in the 730 average range, and usually higher for non-US students.

With 10 years of work experience, you may be better suited for an EMBA, from an acceptance-rate probability perspective. However, that may be of little value depending where you are applying from - top EMBAs usually require in-person classes on weekends, which might not be feasible if you are commuting from a far way away. EMBA programs also often have lower GMATs, so the 650 score may not matter as much.

Regardless of whether you decide to go the EMBA or MBA route, one mistake you don't want to make is to imply in your application that you are opting for b-school because you have somehow stagnated in your career. If you haven't advanced much in the last 5 years at your job, that's going to look like a red-flag to AdComs. Even if your title hasn't changed reflecting a promotion in recent years, you should still make sure to convey the additional responsibility and leadership that you have taken in the past few years. You want to seem like an already strong and rising star who is going to b-school to take their career to the next level, rather than somebody who has fizzled out. This isn't to imply that this is the case with you, only that you should be mindful not to make it look that way on paper.
