Hello BeatTheGmat Community!

This is my first post on these forums but I've been kinda lurking around reading the different sections for a while. Along with improving my skill in the different areas of the GMAT I've been thinking about where I want to go after b-school.

I work in sales right now for a major retail bank but I am not interested in staying in retail banking nor in sales when I have my MBA so I wanted to know what other people are doing or thinking about. How did you pick your concentration? Why did you choose consulting/accounting/marketing to be the functional area where you want to work when you have your MBA? What industry are you interested in working in and why did you pick that one?

Pretty much from own research is that for concentrations, finance/accounting seems to be the most popular then maybe general management. For industries I'm not really that sure, I've heard that the healthcare industry offers more job security/opportunity because it's expanding. Finally for functional area finance/accounting seems to be the most popular.

Thanks so much!

Hi

You have asked a question which needs a book to be read.

Its a motherhood but very important question. Somethings which you said were pretty good observation.

Consulting is very competitive and highest paying along with finance.
Some sectors are growing like you mentioned Healthcare which is a vertical.

Vault's MBA career Bible will be a good book to have a comprehensive knowledge of the MBA ambit.

Whatever it is you choose it should ideally be a nice mix between what you already have done, and what you are interested in. Meaning, if you are really interested in healthcare, it can be a great choice, but if you want to change to healthcare without either the experience or the passion, your future development in the industry will likely be limited (I mean there's gotta be hundreds and hundreds of others who will have both the experience and the passion). Finance is an obvious choice for many, because of the colossal salaries, as is Management Consulting because it's a job which exposes you to a ton of industries, and eventually at some pint, you will likely find a path on an engagmenet that suits you (and perhaps get an offer to move into an industry from a particularly happy client). So those are good places to start,

Hope this helps you my good sir,
