Leadership experience other than work?

by csnyder12 » Tue Aug 04, 2009 9:15 am
Hello,

I recently started working for a very flat organization and frankly I won't have much leadership experience unless I stick around for 4-5 years. I have been here for only a month.

I was a "financial advisor" in my previous job and was hired on an independent contractor basis. I was essentially running my own small business and managing about 10 million in client assets. Would adcoms consider that decent leadership experience?

If not, what do you recommend to increase my leadership experience outside of work? Are there any organizations that I should join?

I would like to enter b school in the Fall of 2011. Any suggestions?!

Thanks for your help!!

Leadership can take different forms. Usually it relates to influence and impact and involves followers. If you are advising others as a financial advisor or managing people, then you can discuss your leadership experience. You can also draw on college and community service or extra-curricular leadership experience.

Don't think of leadership narrowly in terms of title and hierarchical charts. Think of it more broadly, and you may surprise yourself with the leadership that you can demonstrate. Please see Admissions Wants Leadership Not Labels, Leadership in Admissions (Part 1), Different Styles of Leadership

Best,
Linda
