Samuel Sewall viewed marriage, as other seventeenth-century colonists, like a property arrangement rather than an emotional bond based on romantic love.

I got the ans as (E), but hv a confusion between this phrase
"viewed marriage as a property arrangement" &
"viewed marriage like a property arrangement"

My ques is how we come to know that where to use "as" & where to use "like".
