rather than Vs instead of -? - urgent my GMAT on 4thNov

What is preferred "rather than" or "instead of"
and "in that" Vs "because"

I found this SC in my GMATprep exam today and not sure
why the answer is choice D. Any insight will be
helpful...

The parachute like membranes of Africa's scaly-tailed
flying squirrels differ from those of the flying
squirrels in the family Sciuridae /u because they are
attached to a cartilage rod at the elbow instead of /u
the wrist

a. because they are attached to a cartilage rod at the
elbow instead of

d. in that they are attached to a cartilage rod at the
elbow rather than at

Thanks. What about "in that" is almost obsolete and is not preferred much... any idea between "because" and "in that" which one should be preferred
