My answer is D. As a result of the destruction.....later generations lost....is clear sentence.
C - "because of the result of the destruction of" is wordy.
E - changes the meaning. The library in Alexandria was the largest in the world not in Alexandria.
B - The use of 'destroying' conveys a continuous tense which is not correct in this context.
A - awkward construction
