We have:BTGmoderatorDC wrote:Ron is 4 inches taller than Amy, and Barbara is 1 inch taller than Ron. If Barbara's height is 65 inches, what is the median height, in inches, of these three people?
A. 60
B. 61
C. 62
D. 63
E. 64
1. Ron is 4 inches taller than Amy
2. Barbara is 1 inch taller than Ron
3. Barbara's height is 65 inches
We have to find the median height, in inches, of these three people.
We see that among Ron, Barbara, and Amy, Barbara is the tallest, and Amy is the shortest. Since median height is the height of the kid whose height falls between the tallest and the shortest kid, Ron's height must be the median height.
We know that Barbara is 1 inch taller than Ron, and Barbara's height is 65 inches, thus, Ron's height = 65 - 1 = 64 inches.
The correct answer: E
Had the information, "Ron is 4 inches taller than Amy," simply been "Ron is taller than Amy," we still would have got the answer.
Hope this helps!

Let A = Amy's heightBTGmoderatorDC wrote:Ron is 4 inches taller than Amy, and Barbara is 1 inch taller than Ron. If Barbara's height is 65 inches, what is the median height, in inches, of these three people?
A. 60
B. 61
C. 62
D. 63
E. 64
So, A + 4 = Ron's height
And A + 5 = Barbara's height
If Barbara's height = 65, then we can write: A + 5 = 65
Solve to get: A = 60
So, Amy's height is 60, Ron's height is 64 and Barbara's height is 65
So, the median height = 64
Answer: E

Hi All,
We're told that Ron is 4 inches TALLER than Amy, Barbara is 1 inch TALLER than Ron and Barbara's height is 65 inches. We're asked for the MEDIAN height, in inches, of these three people. The word 'median' means "middle number"; to find that value, we first half to list the 3 heights from least to greatest, then pick the one in the 'middle' (in this case, the 2nd number).
Barbara = 65 inches tall
Barbara is 1 inch TALLER than Ron, so Ron = 64 inches
Ron is 4 inches TALLER than Amy, so at this point, we can technically stop working (Amy will be shortest and Barbara is tallest, so Ron's height will be the Median height).
Final Answer: E
