Highest cost = $1.12 per gallon for the worst gas mileage, or 16 miles/gallon. A 480 mile trip will consume 480/16 = 30 gallons, for a total cost of 30 * 1.12. = $33.60

Lowest cost = $.96 per gallon for the best gas mileage of 24 miles/gallon. A 480 mile trip will consume 480/24 = 20 gallons, for a total cost of 20* .96. = $ 19.20

Difference = 33.60 - 19.20 = 14.40; The answer is D

To determine the most expensive price for gas, we take the smallest (worst) mileage and the largest price. Thus, for the 480 miles, the most expensive the gas could be is:

480 x 1.12/16 = $33.60

For the least expensive, we'd take the largest (best) mileage and the smallest price:

480 x 0.96/24 = $19.20

Thus, the difference is 33.6 - 19.2 = $14.40

Answer: D
